Book Life and the Ideal Classic Reprint

Download or read book Life and the Ideal Classic Reprint written by Jonathan Brierley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and the Ideal These essays are based on the view that every form of life contains its separate ideal; in other words, that in all departments of it there is a something better than we have yet seen or reached. And they are a search for that ideal. The best thing about our universe is that it is an unfinished one; and that we, in our several positions, are called in as co-workers in the finishing of it. In business, in politics, in our social systems; in religion, as it exists in our forms and beliefs, there is a something yet to be attained, an eternal progress which we are to help in realising. We can never do our best work except in fidelity not only to what is, but to what is yet to be. The topics discussed are various as life is various, but they will be found to be united in this common conception. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ideal Life It is Spring, and the whole world is green; green overhead, where the wind and the tree-tops talk together as it "bloweth where it listeth;" green lower down where the nests hang between floating lights and shadows in the leafy boughs, and unseen winged things twitter and stir in the verdant silence; green under foot where the lush meadow grasses grow thick by every pool and limpid stream. The Spring is abroad; in the air, which is resonant and vibrant with all clear, sweet sounds; in the orchards, where the fruit-trees stand by night with a white spray and mist of blossoms in the silvery moonshine; and, in the long pastures, green and fresh and sweet, where the herds of cattle wander at their will. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ideal Life: Addresses Hitherto Unpublished Professor Drummond's influence on his contemporaries is not to be measured by the sale of his books, great as that has been. It may be doubted whether any living novelist has had so many readers, and perhaps no living writer has been so eagerly followed and so keenly discussed on the Continent and in America. For some reason, which it is difficult to assign, many who exercise great influence at home are not appreciated elsewhere. It has been said, for example, that no book of Ruskin's has ever been translated into a Continental language, and though such a negative is obviously dangerous, it is true that Ruskin has not been to Europe what he has been to England. But Professor Drummond had the widest vogue from Norway to Germany. There was a time when scarcely a week passed in Germany without the publication of a book or pamphlet in which his views were canvassed. In Scandinavia, perhaps, no other living English-man was so widely known. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Quest of an Ideal: An Autobiography I have spent the greater part of my life in quest Of an emancipative, an illuminative and a regula tive ideal, an ideal which would give a meaning to life and a purpose to my life, and, in doing so, would deliver me from thraldom to aims and ambitions which, even While they dominated me, I felt to be unworthy of my better self. The quest has been in a sense its own reward; for it has lured me on beyond all familiar horizons and Opened up infinite vistas to the desires of my heart and the imaginations of my mind. And the nearer I have come to conscious intercourse with the ideal, the more clearly do I see that, under various disguises, it has been my guide through all the years of pilgrimage and pursuit. Book Life s Basis and Life s Ideal

Download or read book Life s Basis and Life s Ideal written by Rudolf Eucken and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life's Basis and Life's Ideal: The Fundamentals of a New Philosophy of Life Brief reference may be made here to an attitude, common in the present time, especially among English-speaking peoples, which the author does not explicitly mention. I mean the attitude of Agnosticism. This, he would contend and it would seem rightly, is in the main theoretical and does not, as such correspond to or represent a system of life. The agnostic s system of life is formed of aspects of the systems discussed, with a strong tendency to Naturalism. The case of Huxley, who coined the term A gnosticism, is an excellent example notwithstanding his frequently insisting with considerable force upon truths essentially idealistic, no one can doubt the predominant naturalistic tendency of his thought. As a rule the adoption of the attitude of Agnosticism is an attempt, as Dr. Ward has so clearly and forcibly argued in his Naturalism and to escape from the difficulties of Naturalism, which in the end it betrays. Agnosticism is, in fact, only an assumed absence of a theory of life. Professor Eucken would insist that the instability of the position is intolerable in actual life. Life's demand for unification, for consciousness of a meaning and a value, drives us beyond it. Mere research, he writes, p. 272, can tolerate a state Of hesitation between affirmation and negation; it must Often refrain from a decision in the case of special problems. Life, however.
