Book The Life and Services of John Newland Maffitt Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life and Services of John Newland Maffitt Classic Reprint written by Emma Martin Maffitt and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Services of John Newland Maffitt The "Life" to which these lines are the introduction is the outcome of a promise made by the writer to "Florie," eldest daughter of Capt. John N. Maffitt. She expressed to me, a year before she passed away, her great desire that I prepare for publication the life of her father. I urged my unfitness, or inability, for the task, but she insisted that I alone could prepare the record which the public had a right to expect because of the part which her father had taken in our great struggle. Her request was sealed by her sad death, but it was not until the passing of her father, two years later, that I was inspired to fulfil my promise, in part, by preparing his obituary notice. The urgent necessity of training and educating my young children compelled the postponement of any further effort in this direction, but not for one moment have I been unmindful of its demands. It has been ever before me as my life's work, a work to be done when other duties permitted the opportunity. My inspiration in this work has been to do justice to my husbands memory, and, as much as possible, to eliminate myself. Wherever he had uttered a word which memory retained, or left a written document or sentence, it has been set down. So far as possible he has spoken for himself. My work has been to bridge over any hiatus by explanation or comment, when such was necessary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Treasure and Empire in the Civil War

Download or read book Treasure and Empire in the Civil War written by Neil P. Chatelain and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-03-21 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across North America's periphery, unknown and overlooked Civil War campaigns were waged over whether the United States or Confederacy would dominate lands, mines, and seaborne transportation networks of North America's mineral wealth. The U.S. needed this wealth to stabilize their wartime economy while the Confederacy sought to expand their own treasury. Confederate armies advanced to seize the West and its gold and silver reserves, while warships steamed to intercept Panama route ships transporting bullion from California to Panama to New York. United States forces responded by expelling Confederate incursions and solidified territorial control by combating Indigenous populations and enacting laws encouraging frontier settlement. The U.S. Navy patrolled key ports, convoyed treasure ships, and integrated continent-wide intelligence networks in the ultimate game of cat and mouse. This book examines the campaigns to control North America's mineral wealth, linking the Civil War's military, naval, political, diplomatic and economic elements. Included are the hemispheric land and sea adventures involving tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt, admiral and explorer Charles Wilkes, renowned sea captain Raphael Semmes, General Henry Sibley, cowboy and mountain man Kit Carson, Indigenous leaders Mangas Coloradas and Geronimo, writer and miner Mark Twain, and Mormon leader Brigham Young.

Book Life in Jefferson Davis Navy

Download or read book Life in Jefferson Davis Navy written by Barbara B Tomblin and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War is often considered a "soldiers' war," but Life in Jefferson Davis' Navy acknowledges the legacy of service of the officers and sailors of the Confederate States Navy. In this full-length study, Barbara Brooks Tomblin addresses every aspect of a Confederate seaman's life, from the risks of combat to the everyday routines which sustained those sailing for the stars and bars. Drawing upon diaries, letters, newspaper accounts, and published works, Tomblin offers a fresh look at the wartime experiences of the officers and men in the Confederate Navy, including those who served on gunboats, ironclads, and ships on western rivers and along the coast and at Mobile Bay, as well as those who sailed on the high seas aboard the Confederate raiders Sumter, Alabama, Florida, and Shenandoah. The author also explores the daily lives, deprivations, and sufferings of the sailors who were captured and spent time in Union prisoner of war camps at Point Lookout, Elmira, Camp Chase, Johnson's Island, Ship Island, and Fort Delaware. Confederate prisoners' journals and letters give an intimate account of their struggle, helping modern audiences understand the ordeals of the defeated in the Civil War.

Book The Papers of Jefferson Davis

Download or read book The Papers of Jefferson Davis written by Jefferson Davis and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2015-05-12 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The final volume of The Papers of Jefferson Davis follows the former president of the Confederacy through the completion of his two monumental works on the history of the Confederate States of America. In the first, The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government (1881), Davis sought to recast the Confederacy as a just and moral nation that was constitutionally correct in standing up for its rights. Himself the subject of heated debates about why the Confederacy lost, Davis also used the book to castigate Confederate government and military officials who he believed had failed the cause. Later, A Short History of the Confederate States (1890) attempted to burnish the image of the former Confederacy and to refute accusations of intentional mistreatment of Union prisoners. While completing these books, Davis attended and spoke at numerous Confederate memorial services and monument dedications, all the while waging a bitter feud with two of his former top generals-Joseph E. Johnston and P. G. T. Beauregard-over the reasons for the fall of the Confederacy. In late 1889, having returned to New Orleans from a trip to his plantation, Brierfield, Davis succumbed to pneumonia. His funeral procession attracted an estimated 150,000 mourners, a testament to the lasting popularity of the Confederacy's only president. In volume 14 of The Papers of Jefferson Davis, the editors have drawn from over one hundred manuscript repositories and private collections, in addition to numerous published sources, to offer a compelling portrait of Davis over the last decade of his life.
