Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln The story of Lincoln's struggles, triumphs, and heroic death has become, a commonplace of history, and no series of biographies of the noble and good would be complete without a sketch of his life. While he owed his inspiration and training to the great Republic which he saved, and which has entered, as a direct fruit. Of his heroism, upon a new era of prosperity, all British people claim him as of their stock and kin. The anglo-saxon homely virtues of simplicity, tena city, and fidelity' were seen in him; Lincoln was a product of the principles which have given Milton, Cromwell, Livingstone, and other heroes to the world. All English-speaking people delight in his character and work, and it is not too much to say that all have been directly benefited by him and by his achievements. The world is brighter and purer because such a life once Shed its radiance in a dark place; nor will Lincoln ever be forgotten among the heroes who have made history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Obsequies of Abraham Lincoln: In Newark, N. J., April 19, 1865 We need not this proof - the man's life, principles and utterances, prove his faith. And we may joyfully believe that a life of so much excellence was but the preface to a better life - clothed in a righteousness not his own. I might detain you longer. I might point out to you what he accomplished for us, but I forbear. Let me only say: He has established it, that the will of the majority, restrained only by the Constitution of our fathers, is the sovereign power of this Nation. He has established it, that this Government is not a confederation of petty sovereignties, any of which may at will dissolve the Government, but that we are a great Nation, having in our selves under God, the power of life and of self-preservation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Abraham Lincoln: His Early History, Political Career, Speeches in and Out of Congress Gentlemen, only a few more words as to this alliance. For my part, I have to say, that whether there be such an alliance, depends, so far as I know, upon what may be a right defini tion of the tei'm alliance. If for the Republican party to see the other great party to among themselves, and not be glad of it - if that is an I am in; but if it is meant to be said that the Republicans had formed an alliance going beyond that, by which there is contribution of money or sacrifice Of principle on the one side or the other, so far as the Republican party is concerned, if there be any such thing, I protest that I neither know any thing of'it, nor do I believe it. I will, however, say - as I think this branch of the argument is lugged in - I would before I leave it, state, for the benefit Of those concerned, that one of those same Buchanan men did once tell inc of an argument that he made for his opposition to Judge Douglas. He said that a friend of our Senator Douglas had been talking to him, and had among other things said to him Why, you don't _want to beat Douglas? Yes, said he I do want to beat him, and I will tell you why. I believe his original Nebraska Bill was right in the abstract, but it was wrong in the time that it was brought forward. It was wrong in the application to a Territory in regard to which the question had been settled; it Was brought forward at a time when nobody asked him it Was tendered to the South when the South had not asked for it. Book Personal Traits of Abraham Lincoln Classic Reprint

Download or read book Personal Traits of Abraham Lincoln Classic Reprint written by Helen Nicolay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Traits of Abraham Lincoln When my father began collecting material to be used in his joint work with John Hay, "Abraham Lincoln: A History," he put certain things into an envelope marked "Personal Traits," meaning to make a chapter with that heading. As the work grew the items gathered under that head overflowed from one envelope into many; and at the same time it became manifest that a chapter with such a title would be out of place. Incidents illustrating Mr. Lincoln's personal traits found their rightful place elsewhere; and the authors argued that if the work as a whole did not reflect his character, it was labor lost. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln of Illinois: An Address Delivered Before the Union League Club of Chicago, on Lincoln's Birthday, Saturday, February Twelfth, 1921 Happy is the nation that can define its ideals in terms of the personality of its own great men. The essential principles of national life can never be embodied in written constitutions or expressed in legal precedents or formally adopted resolutions; they must be incarnated in the life of the people, and notably in the leaders of the people. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mantle of Lincoln: A Play for the People It is no easy job to put the character of Abraham Lincoln on the stage. Test Dalton has studied Lincoln for many years. He has thought much on the problem of how life could be benefited if the principles of Lincoln were used to-day. Dalton has written a new play along these lines under the title of the mantle OF lincoln, which was presented last night at the Municipal Theatre. The central figure is an old man who was driver of Lincoln's coach when he was President and who drove the hearse which carried Lincoln's body to the train in Washington for Springfield. Download or read book Lincoln s Own Stories Classic Reprint written by Anthony Gross and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln's Own Stories For many years the editor has collected and studied the literature relating to Abraham Lincoln, and his interest has led to the preparation of a book which he has endeavored to make both authentic and significant. His purpose has been to select stories which embody truth and point, and to arrange them, as far as possible, consecutively, so that they may furnish continuous illustrations of the various stages of Lincoln's wonderful career. Various dubious and often maudlin tales which have been attributed to Lincoln have been omitted. While it would be impossible to claim that any collection is absolutely comprehensive, yet it is believed that the best and the essential Lincoln stories are assembled here in a manner which will serve as an outline biography in story form. In connection with this plan the bare facts of Lincoln's life may be restated helpfully. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: A Short Study of a Great Man and His Work As a politician Abraham Lincoln was in breadth and sincerity the superior, and in shrewdness and success the full equal, of Thomas Jefferson; yet he was much more than a politician. No man of his age wrote better English than he; yet it is not as a rhetorician that Americans revere him. His keenness of humor and aptness of anecdote were never surpassed by any public man; yet history sternly refuses to regard Abraham Lincoln as a jester. He was a patriot high and true; but in his day many others were also patriots, giving even life to the cause. He was a statesman of prodigious breadth and grasp, fearless, incorruptible, self-reliant, and, when he judged principle to be at stake, absolutely immovable; yet even the high term statesman does not express quite the full measure of Lincoln or of Lincoln's fame. To all these elements he united a personality the most striking, the most singular and the most original which is met with in history, and beneath it all lay the unfathomable mystery of a human soul. In the depths of that rugged and pathetic face were the signs of a spirit that in its highest moments communed with itself and walked alone. In the language of Wordsworth, His soul was like a star, and dwelt apart. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Abraham Lincoln

Download or read book Abraham Lincoln written by Michael Burlingame and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 2028 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first multi-volume biography of Abraham Lincoln to be published in decades, Lincoln scholar Michael Burlingame offers a fresh look at the life of one of America's greatest presidents. Incorporating the field notes of earlier biographers, along with decades of research in multiple manuscript archives and long-neglected newspapers, this remarkable work will both alter and reinforce current understanding of America's sixteenth president. Volume 1 covers Lincoln's early childhood, his experiences as a farm boy in Indiana and Illinois, his legal training, and the political ambition that led to a term in Congress in the 1840s. In volume 2, Burlingame examines Lincoln's life during his presidency and the Civil War, narrating in fascinating detail the crisis over Fort Sumter and Lincoln's own battles with relentless office seekers, hostile newspaper editors, and incompetent field commanders. Burlingame also offers new interpretations of Lincoln's private life, discussing his marriage to Mary Todd and the untimely deaths of two sons to disease. But through it all—his difficult childhood, his contentious political career, a fratricidal war, and tragic personal losses—Lincoln preserved a keen sense of humor and acquired a psychological maturity that proved to be the North's most valuable asset in winning the Civil War. Published to coincide with the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth, this landmark publication establishes Burlingame as the most assiduous Lincoln biographer of recent memory and brings Lincoln alive to modern readers as never before.
