Book excerpt: Mormons and non-Mormons all have their views about how polygamy was practiced in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Embry has examined the participants themselves in order to understand how men and women living a nineteenth-century Victorian lifestyle adapted to polygamy. Based on records and oral histories with husbands, wives, and children who lived in Mormon polygamous households, this study explores the diverse experiences of individual families and stereotypes about polygamy.The interviews are in some cases the only sources of primary information on how plural families were organized. In addition, children from monogamous families who grew up during the same period were interviewed to form a comparison group. When carefully examined, most of the stereotypes about polygamous marriages do not hold true. In this work it becomes clear that Mormon polygamous families were not much different from Mormon monogamous families and non-Mormon families of the same era. Embry offers a new perspective on the Mormon practice of polygamy that enables readers to gain better understanding of Mormonism historically.

Few cons of polygamy: - It can be the cause for abuse of power simply the man might think that he can be unfair to his wives just because they have consent over the relationship. - It brings jealousy then favoritism among your children can also cause jealousy and emotional distress. - It could prevent a person from spending quality time or this can also cause problems in the long run, especially when it comes to the younger ones, emotional development. - It can lead to abuse which can lead the wives to becoming more submissive to their husband, fearing that they might be replaced with a new wife. - It affects the children most, so children might tease them for having more than one mother in their house. - It could make women feel neglected, one of the wives could get hurt, especially when the man in the house brings in a new wife. Note: Polygamy can encourage the idea that women are considered objects that men can owe. Eventually, this can lead to abuse.

As recently as 2006, only 10 percent of HIV-infected men and women were receiving antiretroviral therapy. In an effort to understand the role that polygamy plays in the spread of HIV/AIDS, the author interviews ten Nigerian immigrant women who married into polygamy, but after coming to the US were either in single-partner relationships or were single mothers. Her book examines gender roles in polygamy and the history and origin of HIV/AIDS. Though some see polygamy as a killer, others view it as a way to observe cultural traditions. Polygamy: Is It a Killer? is a unique look into the lives of this group of women who have made the brave decision to share their experiences so as to provide education and information to younger generations of women.
