Book excerpt: The main purpose of the SLS-1 mission is to study the mechanisms, magnitudes, and time courses of certain physiological changes that occur during space flight and to investigate the consequences of the body's adaptation to microgravity and readjustment to 1-g. The SLS-1 investigations explore the responses of the heart, lungs, blood vessels, kidneys, and hormone-secreting glands to microgravity and related body fluid shifts; examine the causes of space motion sickness; and study changes in the muscles, bones, and cells. Procedures and equipment for space biomedical investigations are also tested. These tests are essential to developing an effective and efficient laboratory for life sciences research on Space Station Freedom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Successful exploration of space depends on the health and well-being of people who travel and work there. For this reason, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has dedicated several Space Shuttle missions to examine how living and working in space affects the human body. Spacelab Life Sciences 1 (SLS-1) is the first of these missions. The main purpose of the SLS-1 mission is to study the mechanisms, magnitudes, and time courses of certain physiological changes that occur during space flight and to investigate the consequences of the body's adaptation to microgravity and readjustment to gravity upon return to Earth. How does space flight influence the heart and circulatory system, metabolic processes, the muscles and bones, and the cells? If responses to weightlessness are undesirable, how can they be prevented or controlled? Will the human body maintain its physical and chemical equilibrium during months aboard a space station and years-long missions to Mars? When crews return to Earth, what can they expect to experience as their bodies readjust to Earth's gravity? With the SLS-1 experiments, NASA is addressing some of these questions. Various aspects of the SLS-1 are discussed. Unspecified Center...

Book A Risk Reduction Strategy for Human Exploration of Space

Download or read book A Risk Reduction Strategy for Human Exploration of Space written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-04-16 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extending the spatial and temporal boundaries of human space flight is an important goal for the nation and for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). However, human space flight remains an endeavor with substantial risks, and these risks must be identified, managed, and mitigated appropriately to achieve the nation's goals in space. The Bioastronautics Roadmap (BR) is the result of extensive, commendable efforts on the part of NASA to prioritize research efforts to meet these challenges. In 2003, NASA asked the Institute of Medicine (IOM), in collaboration with the Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences of the National Academies, to conduct a review of the BR. Specifically, NASA asked the committee to (1) conduct a comprehensive assessment and report of the strengths and weaknesses of the content and processes of the Bioastronautics Roadmap as applied to the missions described in the President's exploration initiative and (2) identify the unique challenges for accomplishing its goals and objectives. In September 2004, the committee released its preliminary report to NASA entitled Preliminary Considerations Regarding NASA's Bioastronautics Critical Path Roadmap. That document presented the committee's preliminary conclusions about the strengths and weaknesses of the April 2004 version of the BR. This report, A Risk Reductions Strategy for Human Exploration of Space, builds on those preliminary conclusions and provides recommendations to NASA about how to address the issues identified by the committee.

Book Spacelab Life Sciences 1 Reprints of Background Life Sciences Publications

Download or read book Spacelab Life Sciences 1 Reprints of Background Life Sciences Publications written by Ronald White and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first Spacelab mission dedicated to life sciences research (SLS-1) is scheduled to be launched in 1991. Almost all the investigations to be conducted on this mission were originally proposed in 1978 and selected by NASA in 1981. Thus, the planning of this mission spans more than a decade. During this time, NASA has funded the investigator teams not only to prepare the experiment for flight, but to conduct the ground-based research to support this effort. This book is an attempt to summarize this background and supportive research by publishing selected papers and abstracts of the SLS-1 investigators.

Book excerpt: Since our first manned space flights we have learned much about how the human body adapts to the space environment and in particular, to the absence of gravity. Today, space research provides a better understanding of our physiological response mechanisms to microgravity. Space and Life: An Introduction to Space Biology and Medicine describes the results of space research in the context of core concepts in human physiology to depict the effects of both long-term and short-term absence of gravity on the human body. The book explains the scientific basis for the physiological reactions so common to astronauts who experience zero gravity, such as bone calcium loss, puffy faces, and nausea. It includes discussions of cosmic rays, cells, plants, embryonic development, and the origins of life on Earth from a space research standpoint. Updating the current knowledge about how the human body adapts to the space environment and the absence of gravity, this book is ideal for space research scientists, physiologists, NASA employees, and students involved in space study.
