Book Life and Letters of Phillips Brooks Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Life and Letters of Phillips Brooks Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Alexander V. G. Allen and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Letters of Phillips Brooks, Vol. 1 The task of preparing the Memoir of Phillips Brooks has been delayed by circumstances which could not be controlled, until it is now more than seven years since the world was suddenly called upon to mourn his departure. There came a sad interruption, in the death of the Rev. Arthur Brooks, in July, 1895, who had made such progress in the short time he had been engaged on the biography that, had he lived, he would soon have completed it. When the materials for writing the life were placed in my hands, in the fall of 1895, I was occupied with other work, and this was not finished till the fall of 1897. From the moment that I was free to begin the task, I have devoted to it all the time that could be spared from my professional duties, and have labored to hasten its completion, keenly aware that the popular interest in Phillips Brooks impatiently demanded the appearance of the book which should tell to the world the story of the life by whose greatness it had been so profoundly moved. When I began to write, I supposed that my task would be easier than I have found it. The study of the material convinced me that I was dealing with a character singularly complex despite its simplicity, a career wherein there were epochs and distinct phases of development. There was danger of doing injustice, or of failing to appreciate motives of action. The full meaning of events and deeds did not at once appear. Time was required before the insight was gained revealing the relative significance of what was obscure. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Washington Irving, Vol. 1 In the delicate office of sifting, selecting, and arranging these different materials, extending through a period of nearly sixty years, it has been my aim to make the author, in every stage of his career, as far as possible, his own biographer, conscious that I shall in this way best fulfil the duty devolved upon me, and give to the world the truest picture of his life and character. Book On Life Letters Vol 1

Download or read book On Life Letters Vol 1 written by A. W. Evans and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Life Letters, Vol. 1: A Translation We know ourselves very imperfectly, but I think your definition is a good one. I seem to myself to be a philosophical monk. I belong at heart to the Abbey of Thelema, where the rule is pleasant and obedience is easy. Perhaps they have not a great deal of faith there, but assuredly they have plenty of piety. Indulgence, tolerance, respect for oneself and for others, these are the saints who are always held in reverence in that Abbey. If, within it, there is a tendency to doubt, it must be remembered that along with Pyrrhonism there always goes a profound attachment to custom and usage. Now, morality is but the custom of the greatest number. There is no one like a sceptic for always being moral and a good citizen. A sceptic never revolts against the laws, for he has no hope that better ones can be made. He knows that the State must be forgiven for a great deal. Would you like a word Of advice? Never entrust the political article in the Temps to one of our Thelemites. He would fill it with a gentle melancholy which would discourage your worthy readers. Ministries are not kept in power by philosophers. As for myself, I am becomingly modest, and I restrict myself to criticism. As I understand it, and as you allow me to practise it, criticism is, like philosophy and history, a sort of romance designed for those who have sagacious and curious minds, and every romance is, rightly taken, an autobiography. The good critic is he who relates the adventures of his own soul among masterpieces. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Life and Letters of Oliver Wendell Holmes Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Letters of Oliver Wendell Holmes, Vol. 1 of 2 To the reader I have only a word to say: I fear his criticism that these volumes have too much Memoir, too little Correspondence. To this complaint, if it be made, I must plead in "confession and avoidance." The fact is that letter-writing was to Dr. Holmes an irksome task. Except to Motley and to Lowell, during their absences in Europe, he very rarely wrote spontaneously and in the way of friendship. His letters, it will be observed, were almost always written because some correspondent could not courteously be left unanswered, or under the more or less mild compulsion of some special occasion. Therefore his letters were few. Every effort has been made to collect them, and the result is spread very fully before the reader. Nothing has been omitted which, by any liberality of-judgment, could be supposed to have any interest: on the contrary, notes and letters are printed, which would hardly have been selected had there been an embarras de richesses. Download or read book The Life and Letters of St Teresa Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Henry James Coleridge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of St. Teresa, Vol. 1 The design of the biography of St. Teresa which is now submitted to the reader, is the same as that of the Life and Letters of St. Francis Xavier, which has now been for several years before the public. There are certain of the saints of God of whom that is pre-eminently true, which is true in a certain measure of all those whose lives and characters are such as to present interesting subjects to the student - that is, that they are but imperfectly understood unless their own letters, as well as their more formal works, are largely used by their biographers. The great typical instance of such a Saint is St. Paul himself. Nothing but a deep and familiar acquaint. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Edward Everett Hale, Vol. 1 The amount of material placed in my bands was very great. There were thousands of letters, many diaries and day-books covering almost the whole of my father's life, a great number of sermons as well as lectures and addresses, beside note-books, scrap books, common-place books, sketch-books, and other such material. His printed writings, also, were voluminous and had never been entirely collected, nor even completely catalogued. It was not pos sible for me to examine and digest all this material in the way I should have liked, nor could I, even, select all that I could have wished. I have tried. Book The Life and Letters of John Paul Jones Vol 1 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of John Paul Jones, Vol. 1 The fame of Paul Jones has been the sport of romance and the plaything of tradition ever since the early days of his glorious association with America's struggle for independence. Bringing terror to the simple natives of the stricken British coasts by his descents upon their unprotected ports, hero of wellnigh impossible exploits and of battles fought by moonlight under the lee of their headlands, his name passed into the domain of romantic legend and was one to conjure with. Chapbooks depicted him in highly colored prints, bloodthirsty and terrible, and mothers frightened their children with the bare mention of his name. During the years shortly following his death, history and romance alike were busy with his name. But these histories are now out of print, and only to be found in rare collections or on the reference shelves of public libraries, and the romances have ceased to charm. The patriotic services of General Horace Porter in discovering the hero's forgotten remains and bringing them to America amid manifold honors to a permanent and glorious resting-place at Annapolis have revived public interest in his character and deeds. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of George Bancroft, Vol. 1 About five years ago the late Mrs. John C. Bancroft entrusted to me the private papers of her father-in-law that I might prepare the biography now presented. They were so numerous that the task of drawing forth from the mass of written words some semblance of the man whom they concerned seemed at first to offer nothing but difficulties. Yet it soon appeared that Mr. Bancroft himself had done much to simplify his biographer's work. The correspondence was, for the most part, well arranged; and, best of all, I found that Mr. Bancroft had secured many of his own early letters from their recipients, and had followed the practice of preserving copies of most of the letters written during his active life. When the source of manuscript material in the following pages is not specifically noted, it may therefore be understood to lie in the papers placed at my disposal. In one of the multitude of letters not used, I find Mr. Bancroft exclaiming, "Oh! these children and biographers who cannot leave in the dark what belongs there." What does belong there, and what does not? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
