Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literary and Biographical Studies Some Old square, faded, and tattered letters of Zachary Macaulay came into my hands the other day letters that have lain hidden for a century, that Lady Knutsford knew naught of, when She wrote the life of Lord Macaulay's father, the dominant, and indomitable Zachary. Zachary Macaulay ruled his family with an inflexible Will, yet that will was softened by the sweet influences Of his gentle wife Selina. These Old letters gave interesting glimpses into those home influences that moulded the character Of Tom, ' who was to become famous, and as historian, to Wield such an influence in England. The early training Of Tom's mother had been a useful one. She was the daughter Of a Bristol bookseller, a Mr. Mills, who had been so successful that he had been enabled to build a row of houses on the outskirts of the city, naming it Mills Place.' In living memory this place was near to open country, and close to Newfoundland Gardens, where vegetables were largely grown, and the little cottages were picturesque two-roomed dwellings. Mr. Mills lived in one Of the houses at Mills Place. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Life and Letters of Lord Macaulay Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Lord Macaulay More than thirty years have already passed since the Life and Letters of Lord Macaulay first saw the light; and the author of that book has now reached the age when it is none too soon to set his affairs in order, and put his work into the final shape in which he would wish the world to read it. I have thought it prudent to use a very sparing hand in dealing with Macaulay's biography; for I have been warned by the examples, which literary history only too frequently affords, of the risk inseparable from any attempt to alter the form, or increase the bulk, of a literary production that has had the good fortune not to displease the public. The existing text has accordingly been left untouched; but new matter of importance will nevertheless be found between the covers. Fresh notes have been inserted at the close of the Fourth, the Eleventh, and the Fourteenth Chapters. The First Appendix contains a contemporary account of Macaulay's earliest appearance upon a public platform, written by a lady who was a family friend of the young orator; and the Third Appendix pictures Macaulay in his aspect of a customer at the book-stalls. A more noteworthy addition to this book is the Sixteenth Chapter which, now concludes the volume. That chapter gives a selection, some parts of which have never yet been published, from the remarks pencilled by my uncle on the blank spaces of volumes that he had in reading. Book The Life and Letters of Lord Macaulay Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Lord Macaulay, Vol. 1 of 2 To give to the world compositions not intended for publi cation may be no injury to the fame of writers who, by habit, were careless and hasty workmen; but it is far otherwise in the case of one who made it a rule for himself to publish nothing which was not carefully planned, strenuously la bored, and minutely finished. Now, it is impossible to ex amine Lord Macaulay's journals and correspondence without being persuaded that the idea of their being printed, even in part, never was present to his mind; and I should not feel myself justified in laying them before the public if it were not that their unlabored and spontaneous character adds to their biographical value all, and perhaps more than all, that it detracts from their literary merit. This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Lord Macaulay, Vol. 2 of 2 The Lord Hungerford justified her reputation of a bad sailer, and the homeward voyage was protracted into the sixth month. This unusual delay, combined with the knowledge that the ship had met with very rough weather after leaving the Cape, gave rise to a report that she had been lost, with all on board, and brought a succession of Whig politicians into the city to inquire at Lloyd's about the safety of her precious freight. But it was in the character of a son and brother, and not of a party orator, that Macaulay was most eagerly and anxiously expected. He had, indeed, been sorely missed. This book was released on 2018-08-10 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Index to Trevelyan's Life and Letters of Lord Macaulay (Cabinet Ed., 1878) IT will not be thought necessary to urge the claims of Biography generally to be represented in the Index Society, seeing that if it cannot appeal to any special class of searchers, it is only because there is no province of literature which does not fall under its sway, no toilers in the field of Letters who have not something to do with the study of the lives of others. Nor will Index-lovers, who are fond of Macaulay's writings, look for any reason for the appearance of this Index beyond the bare fact that Mr. Trevelyan sent his book into the World Without its 'bag and baggage.' But if it were necessary to reason the need of the thing, without stopping to consider whether this Life of Macaulay is to be ranked among great English biographies or no, it might be held sufficient to run the eye over nearly any page of this Index, and note the number of men famous above their kind in the most varied walks of life. In one page will be found specified entries under the names of Bulwer Lytton, Bunyan, Buonaparte, and Burke; in another Lord Carlisle and Thomas Carlyle face us cheek by jowl; in a third, Dickens and Disraeli, or Gibbon and Gladstone, or Southey, de Stael and Stanley.
