Download or read book Life and Letters of Rev James May Classic Reprint written by Alexander Shiras and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Letters of Rev. James May The virtues of Christians are the riches of the Church. A faithful record of them brings new glory to the Gospel. And the accumulation of such records becomes a history of grace. When, therefore, a Christian has been moulded by the Spirit to specially near likeness to his heavenly Lord, it seems a duty to photograph, for preservation, the specimen of living Christianity thus given. Hence this brief memoir of the Rev. James May, D.D. Friends intimately acquainted with the holy beauty of his life, have thought that there was something in it which they could not willingly let die. In hope of blessing to his students and parishioners, perhaps to some besides, that may peruse it, they give a faint sketch of him to the world. Book Life of the Rev James Hervey Classic Reprint

Download or read book Life of the Rev James Hervey Classic Reprint written by D. A. Harsha and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of the Rev. James Hervey A beautiful illustration of the Christian character in its various excellencies is exhibited in the life of the pious and exemplary James Hervey. And it is certainly interesting, edifying and profitable for the sincere disciple of Christ to contemplate this amiable divine in the daily scenes of his calm and close walk with God; in the fervor and sincerity of his devotion; in the ardor and constancy of his love to the blessed Redeemer - and to the souls of men; in the peacefulness and buoyancy of his mind amidst afflictions; and in the strength and triumph of his faith while on the borders of the grave. What Christian does not also love to think of him in his admiration of the beauties of nature - in his tracing the power, wisdom, and goodness of God in stars, flowers, and plants - in his winging his thoughts, in search of themes declarative of the divine glory, 'From hill to hill, from field to grove, Across the waves, around the sky!' It has been the aim of the author to give a clear, succinct and comprehensive account of the leading events of Hervey's useful and valuable life, and of his happy and triumphant death; and to make some passing reflections on the more prominent qualities of his character. Book Life and Letters of Rev Mother Teresa Dease

Download or read book Life and Letters of Rev Mother Teresa Dease written by Mary Teresa Dease and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Letters of Rev. Mother Teresa Dease: Foundress and Superior General of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary in America On the fifth of November, 1686, Sir Thomas Gascoigne, an English gentleman, purchased a house and garden at a place called Micklegate-Bar, in Yorkshire, and deeded it to a select religious community of English ladies established in the City of Munich, Bavaria. Some of the members were voluntary exiles who had left England during the turbulent reign of James I and entered the Community that they might in peace and security, answer the call of their Divine Master to a life of prayer and contemplation. The foundress of this Community was the illustrious Mary Ward, an English lady, intimately associated by birth with many of the great Catholic families of Yorkshire, England. She was born on the twenty-fifth of January, 1583, in Yorkshire, and, during the dark days following the apostasy of Henry VIII, lived with her parents in Paris, France. Here, in the twenty-fourth year of her age, she founded her Community and opened at St. Omer, 1609, a select school for young ladies. The Community increased in numbers, and in time was able to answer appeals to open schools in Bavaria, Flanders, Austria and Italy. In 1642, the saintly Mary Ward visited Heworth, England, where she died on the twenty-third of January, 1645. Book Letters of James Boswell to the Rev W J Temple Classic Reprint

Download or read book Letters of James Boswell to the Rev W J Temple Classic Reprint written by James Boswell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of James Boswell to the Rev. W. J Temple Notwithstanding the peculiar and private character of this correspondence, which certainly reflects in many parts little credit on the memory of the writer, still there can be little doubt that, could he now have a voice with respect to its publication, his morbid ego tiam would have approved of its thus appearing at the present day: indeed passages will be found in this volume which indicate that, not only did he reckon on Mr. Temple's preserving his letters, but even on the possibility of their coming to the eyes of the Public. It is interesting, in connection with the appearance of this volume, to read Boswell's own opinion upon the subject of the publication of private letters, which is expressed in the Preface to his correspondence with the Hon. Andrew Erskine which he published at an early period of his life Curiosity, says he, is the most prevalent of all our passions, and the curiosity for reading letters is the most prevalent of all kinds of curiosity. Had any man in the three kingdoms found the following letters, directed, sealed, and addressed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2016-08-20 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiography of Rev. James B. Finley, or Pioneer Life in the West The following pages contain a brief, unvarnished narrative of the incidents of my life; and as, in the providence of God, I was permitted to grow up with the west, it may not be uninteresting to the people of the west, to be made more fully acquainted with my somewhat eventful history. For upward of forty years I have been constantly engaged in preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the woods, cities, and villages of the west; and nearly all that time, with few exceptions, such as I have noted, my name has been on the effective list of traveling preachers. My time, with what talents I had, has all been consecrated to the Church of my choice, and now, after the lapse of almost half a century in the serv ice of the Church, I would not recall what I have done and suffered for Christ's sake. The only regret that I have is, that I did not accomplish more. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Letters of James Agee to Father Flye

Download or read book Letters of James Agee to Father Flye written by James Agee and published by Melville House. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I’ll croak before I write ads or sell bonds—or do anything except write.” James Agee’s father died when he was just six years old, a loss immortalized in his Pulitzer Prize–winning novel, A Death in the Family. Three years later, Agee’s mother moved the mourning family from Knoxville, Tennessee, to the campus of St. Andrew’s, an Episcopal boarding school near Sewanee. There, Agee met Father James Harold Flye, who would become his history teacher. Though Agee was just ten, the two struck up an unlikely and enduring friendship, traveling Europe by bicycle and exchanging letters for thirty years, from Agee’s admission to Exeter Academy to his death at forty-five. The intimate letters, collected by Father Flye after Agee’s death, form the most intimate portrait of Agee available, a starkly revealing account of the internal and external life of a tortured twentieth-century genius. Agee candidly shares his struggles with depression, professional failure, and a tumultuous personal life that included three wives and four children. First published in 1962, Letters of James Agee to Father Flye followed the rediscovery of Agee’s Let Us Now Praise Famous Men and the posthumous publication of A Death in the Family, which won the 1958 Pulitzer Prize and became a hit Broadway play and film. The collection sold prolifically throughout the 1960s and ’70s in mass-market editions as a new generation of readers discovered the deep talents of the writer Dwight Macdonald called “the most broadly gifted writer of our American generation.”
