Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Letters of Phillips Brooks When he returned to Philadelphia on the first Sunday in September, he found the same large congregations awaiting him, but he remarked that they were mostly strangers. He returned to take up his work with new vigor and enthusiasm. The year that now followed was prolific in sermons, each week seeing the completion of two; he was determined, if he could help it, not to repreach an Old sermon. In addition to new sermons on Sunday, he gave a weekly lecture in the church on Wednesday evenings, and on Saturday evening he met a large Bible class, composed of members of his congre gation. To his Sunday-school he gave a large part of his time and interest, speaking of the pleasure it was to him to look upon their young fresh faces. He made special pre paration for their anniversaries, and excelled in talking to Children. He pressed his friend Mr. Strong into their ser vice, by getting him to write special hymns for their use. The church was full of life and interest, shown by the heroic efforts to raise the debt which harassed and crippled it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Letters of Phillips Brooks, Vol. 1 To this end, I have given greater space to his formative years and to his earlier ministry than those who were familiar only with the Boston ministry may think was necessary. But he valued his early years, and cannot be understood without them. Not only were the foundations of his greatness there, but the ministry in Philadelphia and the experiences of the civil war called forth a manifestation of power such as his later years never surpassed. Philadelphia was always in his consciousness, even when he seemed so identified with Boston that people almost forgot that he had ever lived elsewhere. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Letters of Phillips Brooks, Vol. 2: Part I It was a noble building in its day. It was one of the first of the Gothic buildings of this country, which were built after church architecture had begun to waken and aspire, and few that followed it equalled its dignity and calm impressiveness. The lighter and more fantastic styles of building Sprang up in the city. The timber spires that made believe they were stone leaped up With unnatural levity into the sky; the cheap stone sculpture covered and deformed great, feeble fronts; the reign of imitation came; and in the midst of all of them Trinity stood, in its exterior, at least, strong, genuine, solid, with its great rough stones, its broad bold bands of sculpture, its battlemented tower, like a great castle of truth, grim, no doubt, and profoundly serious, but yet able to win from those who worshipped there for years an affectionate confidence and even tender yearning for love. Download or read book Phillips Brooks written by David B. Chesebrough and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-02-28 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phillips Brooks, author of the carol O Little Town of Bethlehem, was the rector of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Boston for 22 years and the Bishop of Massachusetts for 15 months until his death in 1893. This volume in the Great American Orators series focuses on Brooks' oratorical style and the public's response to his rhetoric. Chesebrough provides a biographical sketch of Brooks' life emphasizing the development and use of his oratorical skills and placing him within the secular and ecclesiastical contexts of his times. Attention is given to Brooks' development as a public speaker and to his manner of sermon preparation and delivery. Three of Brooks' sermons are printed in their entirety: Abraham Lincoln, The Cradle of the Lord, and Help from the Hills, preceded by introductory remarks and a brief analysis of the sermon. This examination of Brooks' rhetoric will appeal to scholars of rhetoric and of American theology and American religious history, especially Episcopal history.
