Tuesday I went to London, and to a concert of the Musical Union at Willis' Rooms, which was a treat indeed. The performers were a M. Hiller, pianoforte; Vieuxtemps and Goffrie, violins; Blagrove, viola; and Piatti, violoncello. We had first an exquisite stringed quartet of Haydn's, full of sportive fairy music; but then came such a trio of Beethoven's (piano, violin, and violoncello). At the third or fourth bar one was shivering through and through, yet that was nothing to what came soon after. The second movement did indeed lift one up, I don't know where. There were the vast disadvantages of being alone without a soul that I knew in the room, of the room itself being much too large for so small a body of sound so subtly modulated, of my being rather far off, and of my unfamiliarity with the music; but still there was a taste of heaven about it, and one thought that after all, in moderation, the angels with their harps may not be such a bore as they sometimes appear, --at least, if they play Beethoven. Our third piece was a very fine quartet of Mendelssohn's, which it was hard to do justice to after its predecessor. Next morning I got to early service (eight) at Lincoln's Inn, waited for Maurice, and went to breakfast with him. He was in excellent spirits, and I had a very delightful talk on many subjects, which I prolonged by walking with him to Somerset House. ... At last we got to dinner (the 'Apostles'), but it was rather a dull affair, our numbers being small, and our best members wanting. CHAPTER IX CAMBRIDGE: HULSEAN PROFESSOR 1878-1887. Age 50-59. IN 1878, when Dr. J. J. S. Perowne became Dean of Peterborough, Hort was elected to succeed him in the Hulsean Professorship of Divinity. His election made little change in the character of his work. He continued to lecture as professor on the same and similar subjects as before. He gave further courses on the Epistle of St. James, and on the Apocalypse, chaps, i.-iii., and lectured several times on the First Epistle of St. Peter. The last-named lectures and those on St. James were contributions towards commentaries on those epistles, which were long expected and never completed. Work on them had begun years before at St. Ippolyts; these editions were to be at least an instalment of his share in the joint commentary long since projected between him, Lightfoot, and Dr. Westcott (see vol. i. p. 372). As such, he regarded the completion of them as a sacred duty, though eventually he was never able to satisfy himself with the results of many years of study and lecturing. The materials were accumulated and a good deal written, at least tentatively. Vacations were largely taken up with the preparation of fresh lectures, and also with necessary recruiting of health, while term-time was crowded with syndicates and other exacting College and University business. Just after his death appeared Dr. J. B. Mayor's edition of St. James, dedicated to Hort, with a reference which came pathetically enough at that time to the "lectoribus . . . splendidioretn lucent editionis Hortianae jamdudum desiderantibus." Other subjects of his lectures as Hulsean Professor were Cyril of Jerusalem, iii. iv. v., Tatian, the Clementine Recognitions, Tertullian adv. Marcionem iv. v., the Epistle to the Romans...
