Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804–1864) was an American novelist and short story writer. His writing centers on New England, many works featuring moral allegories with a Puritan inspiration. His fiction works are considered to be part of Dark romanticism. His themes often centre on the inherent evil and sin of humanity, and his works often have moral messages and deep psychological complexity. Book Hawthorne

Download or read book Hawthorne written by Brenda Wineapple and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-01-11 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handsome, reserved, almost frighteningly aloof until he was approached, then playful, cordial, Nathaniel Hawthorne was as mercurial and double-edged as his writing. “Deep as Dante,” Herman Melville said. Hawthorne himself declared that he was not “one of those supremely hospitable people who serve up their own hearts, delicately fried, with brain sauce, as a tidbit” for the public. Yet those who knew him best often took the opposite position. “He always puts himself in his books,” said his sister-in-law Mary Mann, “he cannot help it.” His life, like his work, was extraordinary, a play of light and shadow. In this major new biography of Hawthorne, the first in more than a decade, Brenda Wineapple, acclaimed biographer of Janet Flanner and Gertrude and Leo Stein (“Luminous”–Richard Howard), brings him brilliantly alive: an exquisite writer who shoveled dung in an attempt to found a new utopia at Brook Farm and then excoriated the community (or his attraction to it) in caustic satire; the confidant of Franklin Pierce, fourteenth president of the United States and arguably one of its worst; friend to Emerson and Thoreau and Melville who, unlike them, made fun of Abraham Lincoln and who, also unlike them, wrote compellingly of women, deeply identifying with them–he was the first major American writer to create erotic female characters. Those vibrant, independent women continue to haunt the imagination, although Hawthorne often punishes, humiliates, or kills them, as if exorcising that which enthralls. Here is the man rooted in Salem, Massachusetts, of an old pre-Revolutionary family, reared partly in the wilds of western Maine, then schooled along with Longfellow at Bowdoin College. Here are his idyllic marriage to the youngest and prettiest of the Peabody sisters and his longtime friendships, including with Margaret Fuller, the notorious feminist writer and intellectual. Here too is Hawthorne at the end of his days, revered as a genius, but considered as well to be an embarrassing puzzle by the Boston intelligentsia, isolated by fiercely held political loyalties that placed him against the Civil War and the currents of his time. Brenda Wineapple navigates the high tides and chill undercurrents of Hawthorne’s fascinating life and work with clarity, nuance, and insight. The novels and tales, the incidental writings, travel notes and children’s books, letters and diaries reverberate in this biography, which both charts and protects the dark unknowable core that is quintessentially Hawthorne. In him, the quest of his generation for an authentically American voice bears disquieting fruit.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Genius of Nathaniel Hawthorne Oirs and of Elizabeth Manning's account of the boyhood of Hawthorne have placed before the world much that is new and valuable concern ing the earlier portion of Hawthorne's life, of which previous biographers could not very well reap the advantage. I have made thorough researches in regard to Hawthorne's American ancestry, but have been able to find no ground for the statements of Conway and Lathrop, that William Hathorne, their first ancestor on this side of the ocean, was directly con nected with the Quaker persecution. Some other mistakes, like Hawthorne' s supposed con nection with the duel between Cilley and. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One ot the chief literary events in biographical writings is this work. Not only does its subject recommend it, but the fact that it is written by Mr. Julian Hawthorne, a man of genius himself, and probably the one of all others best able to appreciate his father's genius. The basis of the work is Hawthorne's letters, Mrs. Hawthorne's letters, and letters from intimate friends and relatives to either. Every one will rejoice that the author disregarded his father's wish, that no biography of him should be written. It would have been a misfortune if this delightful series of letters had been withheld from the world. The beautiful family life they describe, with scarcely a flaw in it from beginning to end, is a bright contrast to some other interiors of the homes of great writers offered us of late years. For the first time, too, we learn through them of Mrs. Hawthorne's lovely character, and all the depths and contrasts of her husband s many-sided nature. As the letters weie written only for the eyes of intimate friends, they are often quite frank in expression of opinion regarding literary contemporaries. No one should miss reading the work, if only to learn what a model biography is.

He was forty-six years old, and the last year had told upon him, with its various anxieties, excitement, and hard labor with the pen. He was more easily fatigued; he was less robust and venturesome, less physically confident. He showed the changes of time. On his arrival, "weary and worn," says his wife, with waiting for a place to be, to think, and to write in, he gave up with something like nervous fever; his eyes looked like two immense spheres of troubled light; his face was wan and shadowy, and he was wholly uncomfortable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hawthorne scattered his early writings among various periodicals. When he began to gather his fugitive pieces into volumes, he exercised much discretion, and passed by many slight productions. Later he went back and recovered pieces which he had either wittingly or unwittingly overlooked. After his death his representatives and editors drew more from this store of neglected material. Some of it, like the Life of Franklin Pierce, was properly regarded by Hawthorne as fulfilling its purpose in its first publication, yet has a renewed interest from the personal relation suggested by it. Other pieces, intrinsically of little value, help toward an intelligent appreciation of a master who acquired technical skill, not by sudden leap, but by long continued and unwearying patience. The present collection contains miscellaneous pieces not reprinted by the author, into which the element of fiction has not deliberately entered.
