Book Life and Destiny Classic Reprint

Download or read book Life and Destiny Classic Reprint written by Leon Denis and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Destiny Early in May, while in Dijon, France, the books of Leon Denis, the great spiritual philosopher, were brought to my attention by his friend and pupil, Miss Camille Chaise, a beautiful young refugee from Rheims. Profoundly impressed by the literary and religious importance of this volume, I asked Miss Chaise to inquire if I could obtain the rights of translation. This inquiry led to my coming to Tours, where Mr. Denis resides, and where I have pursued the delightful work. Feeling it to be a holy task, I resolved to begin it on a holy day, May 21st, which was the second anniversary of the birth of my husband into spirit life. Beginning with three pages daily, I gradually increased the number, and was able to complete the task on September 21st. The translation was made of peculiar interest to me, through messages received from my husband, while in Dijon, by the aid of a cultured lady in private life, Madame Soyer, who had no personal acquaintance with Mr. Denis or Miss Chaise. The messages urged me to make the translation, assuring me that I would not only benefit the world, but that I would be personally benefited, as the book contained great truths of life and death which would aid in my development. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Higher Life: Its Reality, Experience, and Destiny I send forth this book on The Higher Life, in the hope that it may help some, especially among the young, to hold fast their faith in the great facts and truths, which alone seem to me to make this life of ours worth living at all. The elder Mill, as we learn from the autobiography of his distinguished son, re jected all that is called religious belief. It does not surprise one to learn further, that he thought human life a poor thing at best, after the freshness of youth and Of unsatisfied curiosity had gone by. I fear that there is a large class of cultivated men and women among us who are falling into the same unbelief, and into the sadness which is its inevitable fruit. If what I have written should afford any help to such against this pressure of the times, the labour which it has cost will be amply repaid. This short treatise is intended to throw light. Mainly from a psychological point Of View, on the meaning of these familiar phrases. The method Of approach adopted is dynamistic or kinetic, rather than static. That is to say Stress is laid on the fact that all Worlds, like thoughts, are necessarily changing though at different periods the rapidity of the rates of change varies. There are certain times when current views, opinions, customs and traditions are markedly unstable. The present is cer tainly one of these times. Conditions Of life are seen to be difficult, and many rush to the conclusion that they never were so before, or not to the same extent. Download or read book The Destiny of Man Classic Reprint written by John Lubbock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-18 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Destiny of Man Hough we have thus a sure and certain hope of progress for the race, still, as far as man is individually concerned, with advancing years we gradually care less and less for many things which gave us the greatest pleasure in youth. On the other hand, if our time has been well used, if we have warmed both hands wisely before the fire of life, we may gain even more than we lose. If our strength becomes less, we feel also the less necessity for exertion. Hope is gradually replaced by memory: and whether this adds to our happi ness or not depends on what our life has been. There are of course some lives which diminish in value as old age advances, in which one pleas ure fades after another, and even those which re main 'gradually lose their zest; but there are others which gain in richness and peace all, and more, than that of which time robs them. Through the shroud and linen band They can touch nor knee nor hand, Give nor take nor understand, Dead - who loved so truly. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Lords of Destiny I shall ask you, therefore, to consider the nature of the moral life, not so much as an escape from sin, as an escape from bondage. Indeed sin, from this stand point, is itself a kind of bondage. It is the negation of what the New Testa ment calls the glorious liberty of the sons of God. There is a point of view from which we see all idealistic im pulses as tending in one direction. Eth ics, Religion, Art, Science, Politics, Industry, are all phases of one great struggle for the liberation of humanity. They are attempts to achieve that which no creature but man has dreamed of, and which every fatalistic philosophy declares to be impossible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Repentance of Destiny: A Romance of Anglo-Burman Life "A lonely mind in a holy setting does not attract me," said Tun Min with emphasis, "and I refuse to be a monk!" He was addressing his father, Ko Moung, a bloodstained Burman, whose declining years were passed in the ancient and royal city of Pegu. It had once been famous as the capital of the Talaings for its substantial fortifications, its broad streets, and the sanctity of the great Shwe-hmaw-daw Pagoda; but it was shorn of much of its glory when devastated by the fire and sword of Alompra the Terrible. Ko Moung himself was not a Talaing, having been born and bred in Upper Burma of pure Burmese blood, but after the expulsion of Thebaw he retired to the comparative peace and quiet of a town that had enjoyed the benefits of good government for a third of a century. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Destiny of the Soul: A Critical History of the Doctrine of a Future Life Looking back over his pages, after nearly a quarter of a century more of investigation and experience, the author is grateful that he finds nothing to retract or expunge. He has but to add such thoughts and illustrations as have occurred to him in the course of his subsequent studies. He hopes that the supplementary chapters now published will be found more sug gestive and mature than the preceding ones, while the same in aim and tone. For he still believes, as he did in his earlier time, that there is much of error and superstition, bigotry and cruel ty, to be purged out of the pre vailing theological creed and sentiment of Christendom. And he still hopes, as he did then, to contribute something of good influence in this direction. The large circulation of the work, the many letters of thanks for it received by the author from laymen and clergymen of different de nominations, the numerous avowed and unavowed quotations from it in recent publications, - all show that it has not been produced in vain, but has borne fruit in missionary service for reason, liberty, and charity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Destiny of to-Day: Studies in Conscience and Character Says Christ is dead, Paul says He is alive, and the difference between these statements means the difference between heaven and hell. Every sin ful thought, word and deed; every sinful era or movement in social or political life; every im moral book, error and superstition comes from the belief that Christ is dead; and every noble life, true thought, word and deed, and advance ment of truth and holiness in the nation, Church and individual, in science, art and literature, flows from the bhlief that Christ is alive. God is not dead. A belief in the omnipresence of God has been the mainspring of civilization. From the beginning human thought has been haunted by the presence of God. We are in touch with the Invisible. He is more real than our dearest companion. The visible things are shadowy-time things which must pass away, but the unseen is permanent and eternal. The invisible forces in the world and in man are persistent and will be dominant. We cannot see the invisible forces of thought, passion, memory and imagination in the person nearest to us. God can touch human hearts so faintly that we alone can tell, yet He holds the world so firmly that a bird's nest will not fall to the ground.
