Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Correspondence of John, Earl of St. Vincent, Vol. 1 I have lately learnt with much concern the death of Mr. Newnham Collingwood. Had I known it earlier, I should not have spoken of him with any mark of disapprobation; and I trust, even as it is, his surviving relatives will not think I have treated him with any thing like personal disrespect. In the following pages I have endeavoured to draw a faithful picture from life. My duty was to avoid every thing like concealment, extenuation, or flattery. Professing to be of no party, I may, probably, subject myself to the censure of many, but I shall have the satisfaction of knowing, that impartial men will concur with me; and, wanting this, I should still have the approval of my own con science. A partizan can never be relied on, either as a biographer or an historian. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt: ...intercepting Guillemont's squadron, and the Marengo; as the three divisions under Stirling, Harvey, and Strachan, will nearly spread over such parts of the Bay of Biscay (with an attention to Vigo and Ferrol) as the enemy is most likely to steer for, if bound to Rochefort, TOrient, or Brest. There were certainly three or four and twenty ships in Brest, a few of them very old, which I am apt to believe have been undergoing some sort of repair in the Arsenal: and I consider the two lately brought down, and far advanced in their rigging, as a proof of it. They have at all periods sent ships to sea that our officers would not serve in; I therefore keep as sharp a look-out, as if I were certain of their intention to push out. The wind is now so far to the southward, they cannot budge. The Impetueux continues at anchor off the Black Rocks, and the Diamond and l'Aigle off the Parquette, and I have been close in with Ushant every day. I most heartily congratulate your lordship on your excellent father's advancement in the peerage, and I hope soon to hear that you are called up by writ; for sure I am, the business of the Admiralty will not admit of your attendance in the House of Commons. Ever, my dear Lord, &c. St. Vincent. To Viscount Howick. Near Ushant, April 8, 1806. My dear Lord, Lieut. Faden, of the Royal Marines, now serving in the Hibernia, had much injustice done him, when I was at the head of the Board of Admiralty, owing to a gross misrepresentation from the Island of Alderney, which I was never informed of until he was placed near me in Essex, with a recruiting party of the Chatham division. The poor man lost four years' and a-half rank by this circumstance; and being a very meritorious officer, and well acquainted with the bayonet...

Book excerpt: The first account of Britain's convoys during the Napoleonic Wars--showing how the protection of trade played a decisive role in victory During the Napoleonic Wars thousands of merchant ships crisscrossed narrow seas and wide oceans, protected by Britain's warships. These were wars of attrition and raw materials had to reach their shores continuously: timber and hemp from the Baltic, sulfur from Sicily, and saltpeter from Bengal. Britain's fate rested on the strength of its economy--and convoys played a vital role in securing victory. Leading naval historian Roger Knight examines how convoys ensured the protection of trade and transport of troops, allowing Britain to take the upper hand. Detailing the many hardships these ships faced, from the shortage of seaman to the vicissitudes of the weather, Knight sheds light on the innovation and seamanship skills that made convoys such an invaluable tool in Britain's arsenal. The convoy system laid the foundation for Britain's narrow victory over Napoleon and his allies in 1815 and, in doing so, established its naval and mercantile power at sea for a hundred years.

Book excerpt: Horatio Nelson did not enjoy robust good health. From his childhood he was prone to many of the ailments so common in the eighteenth century, and after he joined the Navy he contracted fevers that further undermined his strength: he was even seasick whenever he first put to sea. Nevertheless, he saw more action than most officers, and was often wounded the loss of the sight in one eye and a shattered arm were the most public, but by no means his only injuries. This personal experience of sickness made him uniquely aware of the importance of health and fitness to the efficient running of a fleet, and this new book investigates Nelson's personal contribution to improving the welfare of the men he commanded. It ranges from issues of diet, through hygiene to improved medical practices. Believing prevention was better than cure, Nelson went to great lengths to obtain fresh provisions, insisted on cleanliness in his ships, and even understood the relationship between mental and physical health, working tirelessly to keep up the morale of his men. Many other people contributed to what became a revolution in naval health but because of his heroic status Nelson's influence was hugely significant, a role which this book reveals in detail for the first time.
