Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the course of the nineteenth century, Jamaica transformed itself from a pestilence-ridden "white man's graveyard" to a sun-drenched tourist paradise. Deftly combining economics with political and cultural history, Frank Fonda Taylor examines this puzzling about-face and explores the growth of the tourist industry into the 1990s. He argues that the transformations in image and reality were not accidental or due simply to nature's bounty. They were the result of a conscious decision to develop this aspect of Jamaica's economy.Jamaican tourism emerged formally at an international exhibition held on the island in 1891. The international tourist industry, based on the need to take a break from stressful labor and recuperate in healthful and luxurious surroundings, was a newly awakened economic giant. A group of Jamaican entrepreneurs saw its potential and began to cultivate a tourism psychology which has led, more than one hundred years later, to an economy dependent upon the tourist industry. The steamships that carried North American tourists to Jamaican resorts also carried U.S. prejudices against people of color. "To Hell with Paradise" illustrates the problems of founding a tourist industry for a European or U.S. clientele in a society where the mass of the population is poor, black, and with a historical experience of slavery and colonialism. By the 1990s, tourism had become the lifeblood of the Jamaican economy, but at an enormous cost: enclaves of privilege and ostentation that exclude the bulk of the local population, drug trafficking and prostitution, soaring prices, and environmental degradation. No wonder some Jamaicans regard tourism as a new kind of sugar.Taylor explores timely issues that have not been previously addressed. Along the way, he offers a series of valuable micro histories of the Jamaican planter class, the origins of agricultural dependency (on bananas), the growth of shipping and communications links, the process of race relations, and the linking of infrastructural development to tourism. The text is illustrated with period photographs of steamships and Jamaican tourist hotels.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The West Indies: A History of the Islands of the West Indian, Archipelago, Together With an Account, of Their Physical Characteristics, Natural Resources, and Present Condition Lesser Antilles without having scenes from Charles Kingsley's At Last come vividly to his mind, but Kingsley only caught glimpses of the charm from St. Thomas to Grenada, and spent his real Christmas vacation in Trinidad, which he makes others see even as he saw it. Froude's observations were confined mainly to Barbados, Trinidad, and Jamaica; and though in his English in the West Indies he was chiefly concerned with the problem of government in the British colonies, he gives some lively views of places and people. Of those whose chief purpose has been to describe what they saw on vacation trips are W. A. Paton in his Down the Islands and C. A. Stoddard in Cruising among the Caribbees. Lafcadio Hearn's Two Years in the French lvest Indies, as the title implies, is more than the narrative of a hasty trip, and has graphic delinea tions of life and character, mostly in Martinique. F. A. Ober's Camps in the Caribbees has the attrae tion of scientific observation and study combined with that of narratives of adventure and descriptions of novel scenes. Regarding the historical aspects of the subject, the same writer's In the Wahe of Colum bus is not to be forgotten, for it presents many de tails of the era of discovery in a new and interesting light, as the result of personally tracing the course of the discoverer in his voyaging and his landings. Download or read book Daddy Sharpe written by Fred W. Kennedy and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daddy Sharpe is a unique work of Caribbean fiction. It is the result of five years of historical research, details of which have been used to recreate a narrative of the life of one of Jamaica's National Heroes, Samuel Sharpe. Locked in prison, awaiting a sentence of certain execution, Samuel Sharpe retells the story of his life in the first person narrative, beginning with his boyhood days at Cooper's Hill in St James and ending with his surrender to the authorities after his defeat in the Great Jamaican Slave Revolt of 1831. These flashbacks are interwoven with present time musings while he is in prison. The reader becomes immediately engaged in the character of the hero and his struggles for spiritual and physical freedom but is also fascinated by the descriptions and historical details of life in Jamaica in the early nineteenth century.
