Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new way for Christians to think about sexuality Author Miguel De La Torre, a well-respected ethicist and professorknown for his innovative readings of Christian doctrine, rejectsboth the liberal and conservative prejudices about sex. He insteaddevelops an ethic that is liberative yet grounded soundly in theBible; a sexuality that celebrates God’s gift of great sex byfostering intimacy, vulnerability and openness between lovingpartners. In A Lily Among the Thorns, De La Torre examines theBible, current events, history and our culture-at-large to show howand why racism, sexism, and classism have distortedChristianity’s central teachings about sexuality. The authorshows how the church’s traditionally negative attitudestoward sex in general—and toward women, people of color, andgays in particular—have made it difficult, if not impossible,to create a biblically based and just sexual ethic. But when theBible is read from the viewpoint of those who have beenmarginalized in our society, preconceived notions aboutChristianity and sex get turned on their heads. Taking onhot-button topics such as pornography, homosexuality, prostitution, and celibacy, the author examines how “reading from themargins” provides a liberating approach to dealing withissues of sexuality.

After her noble father disowned her, Lady Serena Ravenshaw clawed her way from streetwalker to courtesan to prosperous innkeeper. Now she's feared and respected from one end of London to the other, by the lowest dregs of the city's underworld and the upper echelons of the beau monde, and she'll do anything to keep it that way. When mild-mannered chemist Solomon Hathaway turns up in her office, asking for her help, she immediately recognizes him from one fateful night years before. She's been watching and waiting for him for years-so she can turn the tables and put him in her debt, of course, and not because he looked like an angel and was kind to her when she needed it most. She's determined not to wonder what put that fresh grief in his eyes. But after a betrayal even Serena didn't expect, she must put aside her pride and work with Solomon to stop a ring of French spies and save her beloved inn, her freedom-and England itself.

The author’s writing is continually fresh, engaging and impressive resource with simple but forcefulness of language, again exhibited to full effect. Readers would come across the distinctive descriptions of sombre, delicate and translucent fragrance like those of ‘Sing I of Locked love’. You will embark on a journey discovering manifold sentiments, through the poetic lines of this volume. Love poems of tender longing and the woes of parting will certainly impress you. Nature with its fragrant bloom and hush would make you feel as if living in paradise. The leadership corrupt ‘Eat they porridge and dust voters lick’. The readers will taste the fruits of human obsession of sensuality, intolerance, agitation, treason, emotions, anger envy, and denial of life morals. The life of elderly people is quite gruesome when they ‘Blubber and shed tears colder’. We are led by appearances, ‘Some seems glorious / in acts disgrace’. These and many other thoughts will incite you to sing: ‘Love swells, serene the earth / Creatures find life living worth’. Many such lines will certainly allure the book lovers to find out something unique for a convincing read.

  • Author : Andrew Crislip
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2012-09-06
  • ISBN : 0812207203
  • Pages : 248 pages

Download or read book Thorns in the Flesh written by Andrew Crislip and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2012-09-06 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature of late ancient Christianity is rich both in saints who lead lives of almost Edenic health and in saints who court and endure horrifying diseases. In such narratives, health and illness might signify the sanctity of the ascetic, or invite consideration of a broader theology of illness. In Thorns in the Flesh, Andrew Crislip draws on a wide range of texts from the fourth through sixth centuries that reflect persistent and contentious attempts to make sense of the illness of the ostensibly holy. These sources include Lives of Antony, Paul, Pachomius, and others; theological treatises by Basil of Caesarea and Evagrius of Pontus; and collections of correspondence from the period such as the Letters of Barsanuphius and John. Through close readings of these texts, Crislip shows how late ancient Christians complicated and critiqued hagiographical commonplaces and radically reinterpreted illness as a valuable mode for spiritual and ascetic practice. Illness need not point to sin or failure, he demonstrates, but might serve in itself as a potent form of spiritual practice that surpasses even the most strenuous of ascetic labors and opens up the sufferer to a more direct knowledge of the self and the divine. Crislip provides a fresh and nuanced look at the contentious and dynamic theology of illness that emerged in and around the ascetic and monastic cultures of the later Roman world.
