Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life Among the Pygmies: Of the Ituri Forest, Congo Free State Before writing about my little pygmy friends, I should first of all like to mention a few facts about the Congo Free State. This enormous country, reaching from the Nile to the West Coast, may practically be called one huge forest. Fortunately for its opening up, Nature has provided it with the most splendid service of water- ways in the world. Twisting and twining, the mighty Congo river runs like a snake through its centre, gathering into its bed from north and south many other large rivers like the Kasai, Ubangi, and Aruwimi (the latter of which joined by the Ituri, traverses the whole of the Stanley Forest), with their sources rising close to the Nile. Last year I had a most interesting hunting trip from Lado to Boma, merely touching the northern edge of Stanley Forest; I then made my way on to try for that rare animal the okapi, in the big forest near Enguetra. The rainy season drove me out before getting a shot, though I did manage to see one okapi. It was some pygmy photographs taken on this trip which caused so many friends at home to ask why I could not bring some of these pygmies to England, and I was thus first led to think of doing so. Book The Forest People

Download or read book The Forest People written by Colin Turnbull and published by Random House. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Forest People is an astonishingly intimate and life-enhancing account of a hunter-gatherer tribe living in harmony with nature -- and an all-time classic of anthropology. For three years, Colin Turnbull lived with an isolated group of Pygmies deep in the forest of the African Congo, experiencing their daily life first-hand. He attended their hunting parties and initiation ceremonies, witnessed their music and their rituals, observed their quarrels and love affairs. He documented them as an anthropologist but was accepted among them as a friend. A ground-breaking work in its time, The Forest People made him one of the most famous intellectuals of the 1960s and 1970s. It remains a transporting account of an earthly paradise and of a legendary and fascinating people. With a new foreword by Horatio Clare.

Book The King of the World in the Land of the Pygmies

Download or read book The King of the World in the Land of the Pygmies written by Joan Mark and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1998-12-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joan Mark offers an interpretive biography of Patrick Tracy Lowell Putnam (1904–53), who spent twenty-five years living among the Bambuti pygmies of the Ituri Forest in what is now Zaire. On the Epulu River he constructed Camp Putnam as a harmonious multiracial community. He modeled his camp on the “dude ranches” of the American West, taking in paying guests while running a medical clinic and occasionally offering legal aid to the local people, and assumed the role of intermediary between locals and visitors, including Colin M. Turnbull, author of the classic Forest People. Mark describes Putnam’s mercurial relations with family and with his African and American wives—and follows him to his sad and violent end. She places Patrick Putnam within the context of three different anthropological traditions and examines his contribution as an expert on pygmies.

Book Children of the Forest

Download or read book Children of the Forest written by Kevin Duffy and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 1995-12-06 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This intimate study portrays the hunter-gatherer Mbuti pygmies of Zaire. Kevin Duffy describes how these forest nomads, who are as adapted to the forest as its wildlife, gratefully acknowledge their beloved home as the source of everything they need: food, clothing, shelter, and affection. Looking on the forest in deified terms, they sing and pray to it and call themselves its children. With his patience and knowledge of their ways, Duffy was accepted by these, the worlds smallest people, and invited to participate in the cycle of their lives from birth to death.

Book The Forest People

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of the BaMbuti Pygmies of the Congo has become a classic work in the finest tradition of literate anthropology. Turnbull lived among the BaMbuti for three years, not as a clinical observer, but as a friend, learning their customs and sharing their daily life. Turnbull describes their hunting parties and nomadic camps, their love affairs and ancient ceremonies--the molimo, in which the Pygmies praise the forest as provider, protector, and deity; the elima, in which the young girls come of age; and the nkumbi circumcision rites, in which the villagers of the surrounding non-Pygmy tribes attempt to assert their authority over the Pygmies, whose forest home they dare not enter.
