Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip Henry Sheridan (March 6, 1831 - August 5, 1888) was a career United States Army officer and a Union general in the American Civil War. His career was noted for his rapid rise to major general and his close association with Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, who transferred Sheridan from command of an infantry division in the Western Theater to lead the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Potomac in the East. In 1864, he defeated Confederate forces in the Shenandoah Valley and his destruction of the economic infrastructure of the Valley, called "The Burning" by residents, was one of the first uses of scorched earth tactics in the war. In 1865, his cavalry pursued Gen. Robert E. Lee and was instrumental in forcing his surrender at Appomattox.Sheridan prosecuted the later years of the Indian Wars of the Great Plains, tainting his reputation with some historians, who accuse him of racism and genocide. Both as a soldier and private citizen, he was instrumental in the development and protection of Yellowstone National Park. In 1883 Sheridan was appointed general-in-chief of the U.S. Army, and in 1888 he was promoted to the rank of four-star general by President Grover Cleveland. This edition includes great photos of Civil War soldiers and maps.

Download or read book Little Phil and His Troopers The Life of General Philip H Sheridan Expanded Annotated written by Frank A. Burr and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of Sheridan, Ulysses S. Grant said, “As a soldier, as a commander of troops, as a man capable of doing all that is possible with any number of men, there is no man living greater than Sheridan. He belongs to the very first rank of soldiers, not only of our country, but of the world. I rank Sheridan with Napoleon and Frederick and the great commanders in history." He was bold in battle but insisted he was never reckless. He was loved by his men and was lauded by the public for the rest of his life after the American Civil War. His reputation as a soldier was worldwide and when he toured Europe later in life, he was hailed as a hero. He intended to write his memoirs and was working on them when he died in 1888. Two men who knew him (one of whom served with him) took up the task and delivered this volume to an admiring audience. The two men who completed this work were former cavalrymen and famous journalists in their day. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Book Personal Memoirs Of P H Sheridan

Download or read book Personal Memoirs Of P H Sheridan written by P. H. Sheridan and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 1992-08-22 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Philip Henry Sheridan (1831-1888) was the most important Union cavalry commander of the Civil War, and ranks as one of America's greatest horse soldiers. From Corinth through Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge, he made himself a reputation for courage and efficiency; after his defeat of J.E.B. Stuart's rebel cavalry, Grant named him commander of the Union forces in the Shenandoah Valley. There he laid waste to the entire region, and his victory over Jubal Early's troups in the Battle of Cedar Creek brought him worldwide renown and a promotion to major general in the regular army. It was Sheridan who cut off Lee's retreat at Appomattox, thus securing the surrender of the Confederate Army. Subsequent to the Civil War, Sheridan was active in the 1868 war with the Comanches and Cheyennes, where he won infamy with his statement that the only good Indians I ever saw were dead. In 1888 he published his Personal Memoirs of P.H. Sheridan, one of the best first-hand accounts of the Civil War and the Indian wars which followed.
