Download or read book Lies and Broken Promises A Tale of Alcoholism written by Alan B. Bradley and published by Smashwords. This book was released on 2012-06-18 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alan's true story picks up after his parole from Trenton State Prison where he served 27 months of a 3 to 5 year sentence for possession and sale of drugs. He thought he had his drug addiction problems beaten. He felt that alcohol without drugs would provide him the relief that he needed from his anxiety and depression. He started becoming more and more reliant on alcohol as the days passed. His social anxiety was so great that he could not participate in conversations in a group context. His alcoholic life was a whirlwind of brief sexual encounters and drinking at bars in Greenwich Village. His sexual identity was non-existent. He had no sexual preference of a female over a male or vice-versa. Alan was just getting started on his academic career as a free man. He had taken his first 4 college courses in prison and was determined to earn at least a bachelor's degree. In no time at all he was consuming alcohol before every social gathering whether it was at home, at work or on the university campus. Alan appeared aloof to many acquaintances, but his quiet nature was due to his intense anxiety levels and sporadic depression. The years advance and Alan chronicles the huge impact alcoholism has on his life and his urgent attempts to work towards solutions to his inner turmoil. As his alcoholism progresses, he gets closer and closer to losing everything he's worked and strived for. His personal relationships are falling apart. His work on the job is suffering and his relationships with co-workers are becoming stressed. He needs a solution and he needs it now.

Book Lies and Broken Promises A Tale of Addiction

Download or read book Lies and Broken Promises A Tale of Addiction written by Alan B. Bradley and published by Smashwords. This book was released on 2012-04-03 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alan Bradleyâ__s true story chronicles a long downward spiral enflamed by a deprived childhood, sexual molestation, emotional problems, drug and alcohol addictions, and county and state prisons. Part of the story involves his struggle with sexual identity. He was sexually molested at a very young age by a much older male friend of his family. The molestation continued for a number of years. Also, the molestation introduced him to sexual activity at a very early age and he had multiple prepubescent sexual encounters with male friends. These experiences left him quite confused about his sexuality. His early sexual experiences encouraged him to have further male-male sexual experiences as a teenager and a young adult. An accurate sense of sexual identity was nonexistent until he was well into his adult years.Alanâ__s first experience with getting high occurred at 14 years of age. He only consumed a couple of beers, but it was a turning point in his life. His focus from that time on was on getting high. He had always had thoughts of drinking alcohol or using drugs even before this experience, but once he felt the effects of being high, it was like a light went on inside of his head and most of his time and efforts were devoted to acquiring alcohol and drugs.Alanâ__s drug addiction was at its worst from his middle teens to his early twenties. He spent those years as a methamphetamine (speed) addict getting arrested a total of 13 times. Alan had a huge appetite for drugs and this story documents the impulsive and reprehensible nature of his behavior while he was under the addictive tentacles of amphetamines, methamphetamine and other drugs. He was a full blown speed freak injecting crystal methamphetamine at every opportunity. His life was a whirlwind of sex with men and women, drugs of all types, and local and county jails. His struggles with his sexuality continued through most of his life with a number of gay sexual experiences in prison.

Book My Fair Junkie

Download or read book My Fair Junkie written by Amy Dresner and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of Blackout and Permanent Midnight, a darkly funny and revealing debut memoir of one woman's twenty-year battle with sex, drugs, and alcohol addiction, and what happens when she finally emerges on the other side. Growing up in Beverly Hills, Amy Dresner had it all: a top-notch private school education, the most expensive summer camps, and even a weekly clothing allowance. But at 24, she started dabbling in meth in San Francisco and unleashed a fiendish addiction monster. Soon, if you could snort it, smoke it, or have sex with, she did. Smart and charming, with Daddy's money to fall back on, she sort of managed to keep it all together. But on Christmas Eve 2011 all of that changed when, high on Oxycontin, she stupidly "brandished" a bread knife on her husband and was promptly arrested for "felony domestic violence with a deadly weapon." Within months, she found herself in the psych ward--and then penniless, divorced, and looking at 240 hours of court-ordered community service. For two years, assigned to a Hollywood Boulevard "chain gang," she swept up syringes (and worse) as she bounced from rehabs to halfway houses, all while struggling with sobriety, sex addiction, and starting over in her forties. In the tradition of Orange Is the New Black and Jerry Stahl's Permanent Midnight, Amy Dresner's My Fair Junkie is an insightful, darkly funny, and shamelessly honest memoir of one woman's battle with all forms of addiction, hitting rock bottom, and forging a path to a life worth living.

Book Mom everyone else does

Download or read book Mom everyone else does written by Sharon Hersh and published by Shaw Books. This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Help Your Daughter Resist Peer Pressure– Even When You’re Not Around. A national survey in 2001 indicated that in the U.S. one-fourth of the high school seniors have problems with drugs and alcohol, nearly two-thirds of teenagers experiment with drugs before finishing high school, and fifty-six percent of seventeen-year-olds know at least one drug dealer at school. Studies also indicate that when a girl chooses to use substances, peer pressure is the biggest reason why. Many parents believe the best they can do is to teach their daughters right from wrong and hope for the best. But there is more that you can do. Because while peer pressure may be the biggest influence for girls who choose to use substances, parental involvement is the single most important factor for those who decide not to. The dangers of substance abuse can actually bring you and your daughter closer. Whether you want to help your daughter resist the overwhelming pressures to drink, smoke, and use drugs; have discovered or suspect that your daughter may be using substances; or want to help her develop a strong and positive identity in response to negative peer pressure, this book shows how the lure of today’s teen “party” culture puts you in your most powerful position ever to connect with and influence your daughter.

Download or read book Addiction written by Robert P. Vande Kappelle and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-05-24 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is addiction, and how do we know if we are addicted? Speaking sociologically, we are addicted because we live in addictive societies that turn us into consumers and materialists. Speaking biologically, we are addicted because that is how we are hardwired. Speaking spiritually, we are addicted because we seek spiritual satisfaction through things other than God. Humans can be addicted to most any object, ideology, and belief, but they cannot be addicted to the true God, for reasons disclosed in this text. As this book demonstrates, addiction is a pattern of learned behavior that utilizes ancient mental pathways designed to promote survival and reproduction. When neural connections intended to promote eating, reproduction, parenting, and social relationships are diverted into addiction, their blessings can become curses. While heredity, parenting, trauma, and additional psychological and sociological factors play significant roles in compulsive behavior, addiction is essentially a developmental disorder, a way to manage an environment that feels threatening and overwhelming. Change (getting unstuck) is possible, but it requires five ingredients: acknowledgment, resolution, substitution, human help, and divine help. Because addictions represent complex interactions between biological, psychological, social, and spiritual forces, the solution must be holistic as well. Designed as a study guide for groups or individual use, this book approaches the topic comprehensively, examining the nature of addiction; its cause, symptoms, consequences, and means of recovery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ADULTERY Recognizing the Signs Stopping It Before It Starts Recovering from the Damage One-half of the young and middle-aged couples in this country will at some time struggle with the painful and destructive results of an affair. Can these marriages be saved? Can the number of shaken marriages be reduced? Psychologist and counselor Henry Virkler has some answers. In this vital book he describes the devastating effects of adultery, how couples can take preventive steps to reduce the likelihood of it happening in their own marriages, and what to do if it does happen. He writes for professional counselors, for pastors, and for those laypersons who find themselves wanting to understand the situation better. While the author is a committed Christian psychologist and counselor, he warns that faith doesn't automatically safeguard couples from sexual temptation. He shows - how to avoid "innocent" situations that can easily lead to an affair; - what you can do to strengthen your marriage and reduce the possibility that you or your partner will be tempted in an affair; - how to tell if your mate is having an affair, and what to do if your worst fears prove true; - how adultery does not need to lead to divorce if approached in the right way.
