Book Coherent Doppler Wind Lidars in a Turbulent Atmosphere

Download or read book Coherent Doppler Wind Lidars in a Turbulent Atmosphere written by Viktor Banakh and published by Artech House. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiophysical tools for measuring atmospheric dynamics include sodars, Doppler radars, and Doppler lidars. Among these, coherent Doppler lidars (CDLs) have been considered the best for remote measurement of wind turbulence. This is important not only for understanding the exchange processes in the boundary layer, but also in the applied aspect, such as aviation safety. CDLs significantly extend possibilities of experimental investigation of not only wind turbulence, but also coherent structures such as aircraft wake vortices. The authors of this book conducted field tests of the developed methods of lidar measurements of the wind velocity, atmospheric turbulence parameters, and aircraft wake vortices. This valuable resource, containing over 500 equations based on original results from the authors’ work, gives professionals a comprehensive description of the operating principles of continuous wave and pulsed coherent Doppler lidars. This book studies the possibilities of obtaining information about wind turbulence from data measured by continuous wave and pulsed CDLs. The procedures for estimation are described, as well as algorithms for numerical simulation. Results on the vortex behavior and evolution are then presented.

Book Relation of Infrared Doppler Lidar to Remote Wind Measurements in the Turbulent Atmosphere

Download or read book Relation of Infrared Doppler Lidar to Remote Wind Measurements in the Turbulent Atmosphere written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The performance of a coherent Doppler lidar is affected by the atmosphere. Refractive index inhomogeneities limit the effective aperture of our system to 15.5 cm + or - 4% on the average for a 2.6 km horizontal path 2 m above the surface under daytime conditions. Effective aperture scales as range to the -3/5 power. A differential Doppler technique can measure the wind vector in a single atmospheric volume with three (or mor) closely-spaced beams. This method works even when the distribution of velocities in the volume is wider than the velocity separation from beam angle differences. The structure function for backscatter and wind inhomogeneities scales approximately as r to the 2/3 power between the minimum detectable scale in our experiment and an outer scale of 100 to 500 m, depending on atmospheric condition. Book Turbulence in the Atmosphere

Download or read book Turbulence in the Atmosphere written by John C. Wyngaard and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-28 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on his over forty years of research and teaching, John C. Wyngaard's textbook is an excellent up-to-date introduction to turbulence in the atmosphere and in engineering flows for advanced students, and a reference work for researchers in the atmospheric sciences. Part I introduces the concepts and equations of turbulence. It includes a rigorous introduction to the principal types of numerical modeling of turbulent flows. Part II describes turbulence in the atmospheric boundary layer. Part III covers the foundations of the statistical representation of turbulence and includes illustrative examples of stochastic problems that can be solved analytically. The book treats atmospheric and engineering turbulence in a unified way, gives clear explanation of the fundamental concepts of modeling turbulence, and has an up-to-date treatment of turbulence in the atmospheric boundary layer. Student exercises are included at the ends of chapters, and worked solutions are available online for use by course instructors.

Book A Lidar for Remote Sensing of Optical Turbulence

Download or read book A Lidar for Remote Sensing of Optical Turbulence written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atmospheric turbulence affects the performance of missile defense platforms, such as the Airborne Laser (ABL). To understand the results of laser propagation tests on both the horizontal and inclined propagation paths, and to validate atmospheric turbulence prediction models, the vertical profile of the refractive index structure parameter is required. There is no current accepted lidar method for measuring profiles of the refractive index structure parameter. The differential image motion (DIM) has been established as the best way to measure the Fried parameter for "seeing" using a star or laser source. A new concept was proposed, DIM lidar, for measuring vertical profiles of the refractive index structure parameter. The lidar has the transmitter and receiver at the same end of the optical path and uses a pulsed lidar, atmospheric backscatter, and a range-gated receiver. A proof-of-concept test was performed and the experimental results validated the DIM lidar concept and showed that the refractive index structure parameter can be accurately measured.
