Book Restoration of Tropical Forest Ecosystems

Download or read book Restoration of Tropical Forest Ecosystems written by Helmut Lieth and published by Springer. This book was released on 1914 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The destruction of the tropical forests continues rapidly. We all know that this has global, ecological and economic consequences. The problem is of such magnitude that it can only be compared to warfare. The destruction of tropical forests is both detrimental to the global ecology as well as posing a serious threat to the people living in these areas. Furthermore, the overutilization of such a valuable resource poses a serious threat to the next generations. Besides the problem generated for the people in these regions, and for the earth in general, there is a moral obligation to preserve the vast biological diversity in the tropical forests. We have a commitment to all species on earth as well as man and, therefore, need to preserve as many as possible, if not all. This book discusses the problem from different angles: from forestry, ecology and nature conservation. The two main problem areas are: first the wise utilization of that portion of the forest which will be used - especially the introduction of planned forestry in such areas and second the development of a good plan for nature conservation in the tropics.

Book Protective Groups in Organic Chemistry

Download or read book Protective Groups in Organic Chemistry written by J. McOmie and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade there has been a great increase in the use of protective groups, especially in the synthesis of large and complex organic molecules. Perhaps the greatest activity has been in the peptide field where such triumphs as the total synthesis of insulin and of bovine ribonuclease (molecular weight 13,700) have been achieved. Correspondingly, more protective groups have been devised for the protection of amino and imino groups than for any other functional group. There are many reviews and books on the synthesis of pep tides but there has been no general survey of protective groups since my 1 own review in 1963. At that time the five main methods for the removal of protective groups involved acid or base hydroly sis, reduction, oxidation, or thermal elimination reactions. Recent advances include the use of photo-sensitive and metal ion sensitive protective groups, and the attachment of functional groups to reactive polymers as a method of protec tion during the solid-phase synthesis of peptides and poly nucleotides. Another interesting development is the design and use of protective groups with a built-in 'safety-catch', which can be 'released' by a specific chemical reaction, so that an otherwise stable bond is made labile at the appropriate moment thereby allowing the protective group to be removed under very 2 mild conditions. My own interest in protective groups dates from 1944 when, as a student, I gave two lectures on the subject and produced an 11 page review including 70 references.

Book Chemical Physics of Intercalation

Download or read book Chemical Physics of Intercalation written by A.P. Legrand and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conjugated polymers suoh as polyaoetylene (CH)x polyphenylene (C6H4)x' poly thiophene (C4H2S)x' etc., which are insulators in their pristine state, can be brought to the metallic state after "doping" with ohemioal speoies whioh oan be either eleotron donors or I aoceptors. . This doping prooess involves a oharge transfer between the dopant moleoule and the polymer ohain whioh are then supposed to be spatially olose to each other. It follows that the meohanism of doping must be oonsidered as an aotual interoalation process, which will greatly affeot the struotural oharacteristios of the starting material, as well as its morphology, as has been observed during the 2 intercalation of graphite and layered compounds . In parallel with these modifioations, the band struoture of the system changes yielding a new set of eleotronio properties. It is evident therefore that the struotural and eleotronio properties are intimately related, and must be studied simultaneously in the same system to give reliable information. A great number of studies have been devoted to the structural and electronic properties of conjugated polymers after a chemical or 2 electrochemical doping process . Most of these concern the properties of the system for a given dopant concentration. With this approach a universal pioture of the polymer/dopant system is very diffioult to obtain, as a comparison between different experiments is very hazardous. On the other hand, only a small number of measurements have been performed during the continuous electroohemioal doping of various polymers.

Download or read book Supported Metal Complexes written by F.R. Hartley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now IS years since the first patents in polymer supported metal complex catalysts were taken out. In the early days ion-exchange resins were used to support ionic metal complexes. Soon covalent links were developed, and after an initially slow start there was a period of explosive growth in the mid to late 1970s during which virtually every homogeneous metal complex catalyst ever reported was also studied bound to a support. Both polymers and inorganic oxides were studied as supports, although the great preponderance of workers studied polymeric supports, and of these polystyrene was by far the commonest used. This period served to show that by very careful design polymer-supported metal complex catalysts could have specific advantages over homogeneous metal complex catalysts. However the subject was a complicated one. Merely immobilising a successful metal complex catalyst to a functionalised support rarely yielded other than an inferior version of the catalyst. Amongst the many discouraging results of the 1970s, there were more than enough results that were sufficiently encouraging to demonstrate that, by careful design, supported metal complex catalysts could be prepared in which both the metal complex and the support combined together to produce an active catalyst which, due to the combination of support and complex, had advantages of activity, selectivity and specificity not found in homogeneous catalysts. Thus a new generation of catalysts was being developed.
