Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fungal diseases have contributed to death and disability in humans, triggered global wildlife extinctions and population declines, devastated agricultural crops, and altered forest ecosystem dynamics. Despite the extensive influence of fungi on health and economic well-being, the threats posed by emerging fungal pathogens to life on Earth are often underappreciated and poorly understood. On December 14 and 15, 2010, the IOM's Forum on Microbial Threats hosted a public workshop to explore the scientific and policy dimensions associated with the causes and consequences of emerging fungal diseases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terricolous lichens, a habitat specialist group of lichens play a vital role in maintenance and ecological stability of soil crusts with reference to their physical stability, hydrology and growth of soil microflora. Terricolous lichens in Indian lichenological studies haven’t been taken up as a functional group. Terricolous Lichens in India, Volume 1: Diversity Patterns and Distribution Ecology is the first ever publication dealing with soil lichens of India. Divided into five chapters, this volume discusses the lichenological researches in India with reference to terricolous lichens, the altitudinal distribution patterns of terricolous lichens, comparative assessment of distribution with global patterns, and the photobiont diversity and influence of novel molecular clades of photobiont in determining ecological preferences of soil lichens in India. Written by experts in the field and supplemented with numerous photographs, Terricolous Lichens in India, Volume 1: Diversity Patterns and Distribution Ecology is a comprehensive resource that addresses the major drivers of terricolous lichens distribution in India.

Book Flora of New Zealand

Download or read book Flora of New Zealand written by David J. Galloway and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 1162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An updated and definitive guide to the country's rich and diverse lichen flora. This revised identification manual supersedes the version published in 1985 and includes for the first time a treatment of lichenicolous fungi, specialist fungal parasites that have co-evolved with lichens. Lichens are fungi that have evolved a specialised mode of nutrition and are primary colonisers. They are common in all New Zealand landscapes, from inner-city footpaths to the summit rocks of Aoraki Mt Cook, and cover surfaces as diverse as rock, tree bark, and buildings. Although tolerant of a wide range of ecological conditions lichens are extremely sensitive to atmospheric and terrestrial pollution and have an important use as bio-monitors of environmental health and change. Lichens are important in grassland and forest ecosystems as major nitrogen fixers, acting as biological fertilisers and they have potential value in processes of ecological repair and restoration. Flora of New Zealand Lichens, Revised Second Edition discusses 1706 taxa in 354 genera. Keys to genera cover foliose, squamulose, fruticose, filamentous, placodioid, leprose, crustose, foliicolous and lichenicolous life forms. All genera have descriptions, and commentaries provide up-to-date references. Species descriptions discuss thalline, apothecial and chemical characters, and a biogeographical grouping is given. All names based on New Zealand material are typified, both homotypic and heterotypic synonyms are listed, and the provenance of type material is indicated when known. An index to accepted taxa and to synonyms is provided plus a bibliography. There are sixteen colour plates. This book will be of interest to lichenologists in all countries and especially those of the Pacific region and temperate South America.

Book Biodiversity and Ecology of Lichens

Download or read book Biodiversity and Ecology of Lichens written by André Aptroot and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume on lichen biodiversity and ecology is dedicated to Harrie Sipman. It contains 29 peer-reviewed contributions by 50 authors. The emphasis is on the biodiversity and ecology of lichens in the tropics, but some papers are devoted to related areas. This volume is indispensable for active lichenologists, especially because it contains keys to several lichen genera. Full monographs are presented for the reinstated genus Herpothallon (with 29 species), the new genera Diaphorographis (with 2 species), Sipmaniella (with 1 species) and Synarthothelium (with 2 species), and the genus Placopyrenium (with 14 species and 3 varieties). Keys are furthermore given to all cryptothalline species of Lecidea, the lichenicolous genus Sphaerellothecium and the species of Cryptothecia and Stirtonia in Thailand. The genus Trypetheliopsis is resurrected for Musaespora, and all relevant combinations are made. Most papers describe various new species from all over the world, in the genera Bacidia, Buellia, Caloplaca, Chapsa, Cladonia, Cryptothecia, Diaphorographis, Gassicurtia, Herpothallon, Micarea, Phaeographis, Placocarpus, Placopyrenium, Porina, Pyrenula, Pyxine, Stirtonia, Strigula, Synarthothelium, Thelocarpon, Thelopsis, Xanthoparmelia, and Zwackhiomyces. The newly described Thelopsis is intermediate between that genus and Topelia, leading to the supposition that these genera are one continuum and should be united. Floristic papers are presented on lichens from Montenegro, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Namibia (including the description of an association), South Africa and the Seychelles and bryophytes of the Galapagos, but specimens from a multitude of other countries ranging from Iceland to Australia are cited throughout the papers. The floristic papers contain also new synonymys and combinations, partly in additional genera like Mycomicrothelia. One paper is devoted to lichens and global warming. The volume also contains three phylogenetic studies, viz. on all lichen groups with cyanobacteria, on Schistophoron and on Tylophoron, in which a systematic placement for this enigmatic genus is postulated for the first time. The volume is completed by lists of published papers and species decribed by Harrie Sipman. The volume is richly illustrated and contains many colour photographs, e.g. from all Herpothallon species and from sections through the apothecia of many Lecidea species.

Book Checklist of the Lichens and Lichenicolous Fungi of Greece

Download or read book Checklist of the Lichens and Lichenicolous Fungi of Greece written by Bernard F. M. Abbott and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together the results from over 2000 years of investigations into Greek lichens by workers from many countries. Greece has a rich lichen flora but it is not well known, in large part because previous publications are scattered through a wide, and often obscure, literature. This comprehensive and detailed checklist puts the study of Greek lichens onto a firm foundation, and will be indispensible for any botanist with an interest in Greece. Lichenologists throughout the Balkans and the eastern Mediterranean region will also find it of value.
