Download or read book Metaphors of the Web 2 0 written by Alexander Tokar and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is an attempt to semantically decompose the most popular metaphorical expressions associated with two particular Web 2.0 practices: social networks and folksonomies. What is a friend on a social networking Web site like MySpace and StudiVZ? Is it polite to poke strangers on Facebook and give them fives on hi5? How can we subscribe to RSS feeds, if we don't pay subscription fees? Do we really broadcast ourselves on our YouTube channels? These and other similar questions are dealt with from the perspective of the referential and the conceptual approaches to meaning, i.e., what these words stand for (referential/extensional approach) and which concepts they signify (conceptual/intensional approach). Thus, from the referential point of view, a friend on MySpace is only a hyperlink directing to a profile page of another MySpace user. But from the intensional point of view, a friend is a subscriber to the content generated by the profile owner.
Download or read book Courageous Love written by Laura Montané Bailey LMFT and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2013-08-22 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raising grandchildren can be challenging for many reasons. Often, the children have experienced complicated family dynamics, heartbreaking loss, abuse, and neglect – all of which may affect their emotions, behavior, and development. In Courageous Love, author Laura Montané Bailey draws on both professional and personal experience to offer grandparents the hero status they deserve and the encouragement they need, to continue to fight for the lives of the grandchildren they love. This book explores the devastating impact of trauma to brain development and function, and provides instructions for helping grandchildren to experience Post Traumatic Growth rather than Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Bailey presents the idea of the Healing Circles to provide what traumatized children need most: • Safety, basic needs, and structure • Family gatherings that create identity and foster a sense of belonging • Clear rules, authority agreements and non-toxic relationships These Healing Circles provide a protective structure that becomes the container for joy, empathy, and love, a powerful combination for delivering hope and healing to children of trauma. Bailey discusses the three key responsibilities of raising grandchildren in a high tech, high stress, unpredictable world: take care of yourself, un-break the hearts of your grandchildren, and re-wire their brains for success. Presenting easy-to-understand solutions, Courageous Love gives grandparents the tools and confidence they need to run this parenting marathon.

Download or read book One Child at a Time written by Julian Sher and published by Vintage Canada. This book was released on 2010-06-04 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a renowned investigative reporter, the true story behind a horrifying Internet abuse epidemic–and the heroes who are out to stop it. The Internet has helped make child abuse terrifyingly common–it is the new face of crime in the 21st century. There are tens, probably hundreds of thousands of children whose sexual abuse has been electronically recorded and distributed on the Internet. As Julian Sher reveals, the men perpetrating these crimes include lawyers, priests, doctors and politicians. They pick their victims from the streets of Bangkok to Boy Scout troops in England, while the police–from a crack image analyst with the Toronto police to an FBI agent who poses as a 13-year-old girl online–work desperately to nab the predators. One Child at a Time goes behind the headlines to show how law officers are fighting back against this tide of abuse, from daring rescues in homes to the seizures of millions of dollars in the offshore bank accounts of the porn merchants. In riveting detail, Julian Sher shows how clue by clue, and image by image, investigators are using cutting edge tools, turning the technology of the Internet against the perpetrators as they race to find and rescue the victims–children who otherwise have no voice. This important book explores the ramifications of a worldwide struggle, from the need for updated legal powers to the unexpected effects the Internet has had on our social fabric. It also includes a full list of resources for concerned parents. Though sometimes harrowing, One Child at a Time is also inspiring–and never less than absolutely relevant.

Download or read book Hidden in Plain Sight written by Barbara Bennett Woodhouse and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-14 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hidden in Plain Sight tells the tragic untold story of children's rights in America. It asks why the United States today, alone among nations, rejects the most universally embraced human-rights document in history, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. This book is a call to arms for America to again be a leader in human rights, and to join the rest of the civilized world in recognizing that the thirst for justice is not for adults alone. Barbara Bennett Woodhouse explores the meaning of children's rights throughout American history, interweaving the childhood stories of iconic figures such as Benjamin Franklin with those of children less known but no less courageous, like the heroic youngsters who marched for civil rights. How did America become a place where twelve-year-old Lionel Tate could be sentenced to life in prison without parole for the 1999 death of a young playmate? In answering questions like this, Woodhouse challenges those who misguidedly believe that America's children already have more rights than they need, or that children's rights pose a threat to parental autonomy or family values. She reveals why fundamental human rights and principles of dignity, equality, privacy, protection, and voice are essential to a child's journey into adulthood, and why understanding rights for children leads to a better understanding of human rights for all. Compassionate, wise, and deeply moving, Hidden in Plain Sight will force an examination of our national resistance--and moral responsibility--to recognize children's rights.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 2462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These Proceedings, consisting of Parts A and B, contain the edited versions of most of the papers presented at the annual Review of Progress in Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation held at Snowmass Village, Colorado, on July 31 to August 4, 1994. The Review was organized by the Center for NDE at Iowa State University, in cooperation with the Ames Laboratory of the US DOE, the Materials Directorate of the Wright Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, the American Society of Nondestructive Testing, the Department of Energy, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Centers, and the Working Group in Quantitative NDE. This year's Review of Progress in QNDE was attended by approximately 450 participants from the U.S. and many foreign countries who presented over 360 papers. The meeting was divided into 36 sessions, with as many as four sessions running concurrently. The Review covered all phases of NDE research and development from fundamental investigations to engineering applications or inspection systems, and it included many important methods of inspection science from acoustics to x-rays. In the last eight to ten years, the Review has stabilized at about its current size, which most participants seem to agree is large enough to permit a full-scale overview of the latest developments, but still small enough to retain the collegial atmosphere which has marked the Review since its inception.
