Book Libya Agriculture and Economic Development RLE Economy of Middle East

Download or read book Libya Agriculture and Economic Development RLE Economy of Middle East written by J.A. Allan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-08 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oil revenues have made Libya rich since 1961, when oil exports began. This new wealth has affected all sectors of the economy and especially the agricultural sector; there have been considerable movements of population, changes in the use of land, and, possibly most important, there has been a profound change in the expectations of the Libyan people. Agriculture was the major contributor to GDP before oil and even in 1968 it was still the major sector in terms of employment, occupying 32 per cent of the employed population; as such it has always been given prominence in government planning. This study begins by introducing the major economic and geographical features relevant to agricultural development and examines the extension of agricultural activity in the twentieth century, prior to independence in 1951. The later chapters deal with the changes which have taken place since the discovery of oil with respect to land use in all parts of Libya, and deals in detail with agricultural investment and wages. First published in 1973.

  • Author : Hamdi A. Zurqani

Download or read book The Soils of Libya written by Hamdi A. Zurqani and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the soil pedodiversity in Libya. Soils are the source of all life; there can be no life without them. Further, each soil has its own history and its present conditions, which have been shaped by many different factors (e.g. climate, biota, parent material, and relief or topography). The book, divided into eight chapters, provides extensive information on Libyan soils. Chapter one provides an introduction and a broad perspective of the subject, while Chapter two covers the history of soil mapping and research in Libya. Chapter three focuses on local factors of soil formation and describes the geology and climate of the region to explain the diversity of its soils. Chapter four discusses soil classification systems and those most commonly used in the country. The fifth chapter illustrates the constraints and limiting factors that negatively affect agricultural activities across the country. The land cover/land use and the vegetation of the country are described in Chapter six. In turn, Chapter seven presents the status quo of soil biology, the corresponding related research activities, and the other biological properties of Libyan soils. The final chapter (Chapter eight) focus on land degradation and desertification in Libya, emphasizing the main causes, impacts of the phenomena, and efforts to combat it. This book demonstrates the problems that the country is currently facing as a result of climate change, soil erosion, salinization, and pollution, and outlines potential remedies to improve local food security. Bringing together the perspectives and expertise of many distinguished scientists from various universities and institutions in and outside of Libya, the book represents a unique and highly valuable resource.

Book excerpt: Libya is a country located in North Africa, bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Egypt to the east, Sudan to the southeast, Chad and Niger to the south, and Tunisia and Algeria to the west. Libya is the fourth largest country in Africa in terms of land area, with the majority of its desert terrain unsuitable for agriculture. The population of Libya is estimated to be around 6.8 million people, with the majority living in urban areas along the Mediterranean coast. Libya has a rich history and a cultural heritage that dates back to ancient times. The country was under the rule of various empires and kingdoms, including the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, and Arabs. During the 20th century, Libya went through a period of colonization by Italy and was then ruled for over 40 years by Muammar Gaddafi until his downfall in 2011 during the Arab Spring. Since then, the country has been plagued by political instability and violence, with various factions vying for control. Libya is also a major oil-producing country, but its oil industry has been impacted by the ongoing conflict.
