Book excerpt: Document from the year 2017 in the subject Library Science, Information- / Documentation Science, , language: English, abstract: In this paper I will discuss how various web 2.0 tools and technologies can be applied in libraries in order to facilitate service delivery. According to Stephens and Collins, Web 2.0 is the next incarnation of the World Wide Web, where digital tools allow users to create, change, and publish dynamic content of all kinds. Other Web 2.0 tools syndicate and aggregate this content. In this ecology, users will all be publishers and creators of their own information content. Since these applications allow people to make connections, do conversations, and collaborate, they are also known as the Read/Write Web, social software, and social computing. Web 2.0 technologies have found application in businesses, schools, libraries and government services. Online ecommerce businesses such as ebay, alibris and amazon use web 2.0 technologies extensively.

Book U S Public Libraries and the Use of Web Technologies A Closer Look

Download or read book U S Public Libraries and the Use of Web Technologies A Closer Look written by Zeth Lietzau and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of interactive web technologies on public library web sites in the United States has been a topic of much discussion in recent years, and a shift in certain types of user services is underway. Terms like "Web 2.0" and even "Library 2.0" have become common in library literature and at conferences as those on the early edges of this shift share their successes and failures with the broader library community. The Library Research Service (LRS) was interested in adding to this conversation and, in late 2007, designed the study U.S. Public Libraries and the Use of Web Technologies. In spring 2008, LRS staff visited the web sites of nearly 600 public libraries in the United States, searching for the existence of certain web technologies, including technologies defined as "Web 2.0." The web sites that were examined were drawn from a stratified sample of public libraries in the United States, with approximately equal numbers of libraries included from each of five different population ranges. Additionally, staff visited the web sites of all public libraries in Colorado. Two main sets of results were derived from the study: (1) how many public libraries in the United States (and Colorado) were implementing certain technologies on their web sites, and (2) what were the characteristics of the libraries that could be identified as "early adopters" of web technologies. A third set of conclusions -- does the early adoption of such technologies increase the libraries success in traditional service areas -- awaits the release of more current, available national public library data. Library 2.0 survey is appended. (Contains 6 tables, 20 charts, and 4 footnotes.) [This report was produced by the Library Research Service (LRS), a unit of the Colorado State Library, Colorado Department of Education Education, that is operated in partnership with the Library and Information Science Program, Morgridge College of Education, University of Denver.].

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Web 2.0 is more pervasive than ever, with business analysts and technologists struggling to comprehend the opportunity it represents. So what exactly is Web 2.0 -- a marketing term or technical reality? This fascinating book finally puts substance behind the phenomenon by identifying the core patterns of Web 2.0, and by introducing an abstract model and reference architecture to help you take advantage of them. In Web 2.0 Architectures, authors Duane Nickull, Dion Hinchcliffe, and James Governor -- who have 40 years of combined experience with technical specifications and industry trends -- examine what makes successful Web 2.0 services such as Google AdSense, Flickr, BitTorrent, MySpace, Facebook, and Wikipedia work. The result is a base of knowledge that developers, business people, futurists, and entrepreneurs can understand and use as a source of ideas and inspiration. This book reveals: A Web 2.0 model: How the classic Client-Server model evolved into a more detailed Web 2.0 model. Web 2.0 reference architecture: A generic component view of basic Web 2.0 patterns that can be repurposed for other commercial ventures. Specific Web 2.0 patterns: How service oriented architecture (SOA), Software as a Service (SaaS), participation-collaboration, mashups, rich user experience, collaborative tagging systems (Folksonomy), and more can be used in your business. If you want to understand what makes Web 2.0 tick, and how it will enhance your business, Web 2.0 Architectures takes you right to the core.

Book Web 2 0 and Beyond

    Book Details:
  • Author : Tom Funk
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2008-11-30

Download or read book Web 2 0 and Beyond written by Tom Funk and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2008-11-30 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Web 2.0 has taken on buzzword status. It's now shorthand for everything that is new, cutting-edge, and gaining momentum online. Web 2.0 can describe particular Web sites; cultural trends like social networking, blogging, or podcasting; or the underlying technology that makes today's coolest Web applications possible. Many Web 2.0 innovations were pioneered by behemoths like Google, Amazon, Apple, YouTube, and MySpace. But even the smallest, leanest companies can take advantage of the new trends, new and open-source programming tools, and new networks. This book presents a wealth of ideas that will enable any business to quickly and affordably deploy Web 2.0 best practices to gain customers and maximize profits. Web 2.0 is more a series of trends than a basket of things: —More and more, power is in the hands of individual users and their networks. —Web content is distributed, sorted, combined, and displayed across the Web in formats and places not anticipated by the content creators. —New technology now makes rich online experiences and complex software applications possible, and at a low cost. —Integration is breaking down walls between PCs and mobile devices. Web 2.0 is a landscape in which users control their online experience and influence the experiences of others. Business success on the Web, therefore, now comes from harnessing the power of social networks, computing networks, media and opinion networks, and advertising networks. Web 2.0 takes advantage of higher bandwidth and lighter-weight programming tools to create rich, engaging online experiences that compete with television and other offline activities. With examples and case studies from real businesses, this book demonstrates what makes a successful Web 2.0 company, regardless of its size or resources. A non-technical guide, it is aimed squarely at the marketer or business manager who wants to understand recent developments in the online world, and to turn them into practical, competitive advantages.

When people come together over the Web, the result can be much more than the sum of the parts. The customers themselves help build the site, as old-fashioned "word of mouth" becomes hypergrowth. Web 2.0: A Strategy Guide demonstrates the power of this new paradigm by examining how: Flickr, a classic user-driven business, created value for itself by helping users create their own value Google made money with a model based on free search, and changed the rules for doing business on the Web-opening opportunities you can take advantage of Social network effects can support a business-ever wonder how FaceBook grew so quickly?
