Book excerpt: We are more likely to be lonely tomorrow as a result of the freedoms we enjoy today. The risk of loneliness in old age is on the rise due to changing ways of life in Britain. Our families are more fragmented, more people are childless and we are living longer, which all increase our chances of being socially isolated in later life. A growing number of older people can be expected to be housebound with minimum social contact. Many of these risk factors are associated with social progress and independence, particularly for younger people. But they make it harder for us to sustain the social networks on which we may have to rely for support as we grow older. Policy-makers have tried to protect older people against isolation through efforts to integrate health and social care services, and to involve older users more actively in making decisions about their own care. Yet more must be done to improve the quality of life of those living housebound lives. Over 30 people die alone and unnoticed in their own homes each year, and one in six older people living alone rate themselves as ‘often or always lonely’.Unless significant changes occur, by 2021 nearly 2.2 million over-65s will be socially isolated. The benefits of promoting independent living for older people are enormous, for individuals, our public services and wider society. Extending years of active life will allow older people to play a full role in family life and in their local communities. Home Alone argues that users need to become ‘co-producers’ of personalised services. Policy-makers must learn from the voluntary and community sectors to help older housebound people develop their own networks of support.

Book Poor People and Library Services

Download or read book Poor People and Library Services written by Karen M. Venturella and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-11-16 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1996, nearly 40 million United States citizens were reported to be living in poverty. This enormous number set in conjunction with the rapid growth in demand for more information technology presents librarians with a wrenching dilemma: how to maintain a modern facility while increasing services to the economically disadvantaged. Karen Venturella has gathered a diverse group of librarians and facilitators—including Khafre Abif, head of Children’s Services for the Mount Vernon Public Library in New York; Wizard Marks, who directs the Chicago Lake Security Center in its mission to improve the area; Lillian Marrero, who has concentrated on providing services to the Spanish speaking population; Kathleen de la Pena McCook, director of the School of Library and Information Science at the University of South Florida; and 15 others—to find strategies for dealing with the current crisis of disparity. These writers address both the theoretical issues of ensuring access to information regardless of ability to pay, and the practical means for meeting the needs of low income populations. Appendices include the ALA’s “Policy on Library Services to Poor People,” “The Library Bill of Rights,” and a listing of poverty-related organizations.

Book Understanding Community Librarianship

Download or read book Understanding Community Librarianship written by Alistair Black and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the information society, is the community focused library a real possibility? This book reappraises the relationship between the library and its communities through an examination of the rise and decline of ’community’ librarianship over the last three decades. The authors consider key models of community based library service and argue that bland assertions of community prevalence mask a complex and problematic relationship between a highly traditional public service bureaucracy and its users. The resulting uncertainty of purpose, they claim, explains much of the current ’crisis’ of the public library movement. Drawing on recent social science theory and empirical work in the field, this book offers a new and critical perspective on the current public library debate. It is essential reading for librarians, students of information and library science and all who have a stake in the future of the public library. As a case study of community, public service and the local state it should also be of value to those with an interest in community development, cultural policy and local government.
