Book excerpt: Excerpt from Library of Universal History and Popular Science, Vol. 1 of 25 More than fifty years ago the Board of Managers of the Royal Institution resolved to extend its usefulness, as a centre of scientific instruction, by -giving, during the Christmas and Easter holidays of each year, two courses of Lectures suited to the intelligence of boys and girls. On December nth, 1825, a Committee appointed by the Managers reported "that they had consulted Mr. Faraday on the subject of engaging him to take a oart in the juvenile lectures proposed to be given during the Christmas and Easter recesses, and they found his occupations were such that it would be exceedingly inconvenient for him to engage in such lectures." Faraday's holding aloof was, however, but temporary, for at Christmas, 1817, we find him giving a "Course of Six Elementary Lectures on Chemistry, adapted to a Juvenile Auditory." The Easter lectures were soon abandoned, but from the date mentioned to the present time the Christmas lectures have been a marked feature of the Royal Institution." Last Christmas it fell to my lot to give one of these courses. I had heard doubts expressed as to the value of science-teaching in schools, and I had heard objections urged on the score of the expensiveness of apparatus. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Library of Universal History and Popular Science, Vol. 2 of 25: Containing a Record of the Human Race From the Earliest Historical Period to the Present Time Hebrews, meaning strangers from the other side, the men who had crossed the river, the emigrants from Mesopotamia. J our neying through the Syrian desert he tarried for some time at Damas cus, which was then an old city. At Damascus he met his faithful servant Eliezer, whom he created steward of his house. Thence he passed on to the south, crossing the Jordan and entering the Prom ised Land, halting in the valley of Sichem, or Shechem. The Hebrew record goes on to say: And the Lord appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land; and there builded he an altar unto the Dord, who appeared unto him. Abram proceeded unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east; and there he builded an altar unto the Lord, and called upon the name of the Lord. This country - then called Canaan, from one of Ham's sons, whose descendants had peopled it, and afterwards known as Judasa, and now called Palestine - was inhabited by many idolatrous tribes. Abram settled in the mountain region, where he was secure from the Canaan ites, who dwelt in the more fertile plains below, but where he had but scant pasturage for his cattle. He pushed on farther southward, but was driven by a famine into Egypt. Fearing that the Pharaoh who then reigned over Egypt would be tempted by Sarai's beauty to kill him to get her in his possession, Abram passed her off as his sister. Thinking that she was an unmarried woman, the Egyptian monarch took her to his house, and bestowed wealth and honors upon Abram with a lavish hand. But says the Mosaic account: The Lord plagued Pharoah and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife. And Pharoah called Abram, and said, What is this that thou hast done unto me? Why didst thou not tell me that she was thy wife? Why saidst thou, She is my sister? So I might have taken her to me to wife; now therefore behold thy wife, take her, and go thy way. And Pharoah commanded his men concerning him; and they sent him away, and his wife, and all that he had. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Library of Universal History and Popular Science, Vol. 25 of 25: Containing a Record of the Human Race From the Earliest Historical Period to the Present Time Being myself naturally rather prone to suffer from low spirits, I have at several of these gatherings taken the Opportunity Of dwelling on the privi leges and blessings we enjoy, and I reprint here the substance Of some of these addresses (omitting what was special to the circumstances Of each case, and freely making any altera tions and additions which have since occurred to me), hoping that the thoughts and quotations in which I have myself found most comfort may perhaps be Of use to others also. It is hardly necessary to say that I have not by any means referred to all the sources of happiness Open to us, some indeed Of the greatest pleasures and blessings being altogether omit ted. Edmund Randolph, who was no strong adherent of Washington, afterward wrote to him thus: The Constitution would never have been adopted but from a knowledge that you had once sanctioned it and an expectation that you would execute it. Lafayette at once wrote from Paris The Constitution satisfies many of our desires; but I am much mistaken if there are not some points that would be perilous had not the United States the happiness of possessing their guardian angel, who will lead them to whatever still remains to be done before reaching perfection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Library of Universal History and Popular Science, Vol. 11 of 25: Containing a Record of the Human Race From the Earliest Historical Period to the Present Time This condition of things had its origin in the efi'orts of the Tudor sovereigns to estab lish a court party in the House of Com mons by a profuse creation of boroughs, most of which were mere villages then at the disposal of the crown, and resulted in the appropriation of these seats by the neighboring land-owners, who bought and sold them as they did their own estates. Even in towns which had a real claim to representation the restriction of municipal privileges ever since the fourteenth century to a small proportion of the inhabitants of such towns, and in many instances the limi tation of the elective franchise to members of the governing corporation, rendered their representation simply nominal. Surely, if from some higher Sphere, beings of a pure ly spiritual nature - nourished, that is, not by material meats and drinks, but by ideas - look down Upon the lot of man, they must be before everything amazed at the complaints of poverty which rise up from every side. When every stone on which we tread can yield a history, to follow up which is almost the work of a lifetime; when every word we use is a thread leading back the mind through centuries of man's life on earth; it must be confessed that, for riches of any but a materi al sort, for a wealth of ideas, the mind's nourishment, there ought to be no lack.
