Book Texturization and Light Trapping in Silicon Solar Cells

Download or read book Texturization and Light Trapping in Silicon Solar Cells written by U. Gangopadhyay and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reduction of optical losses in both mono and multicrystalline silicon solar cells by surface texturing is one of the important issues of modern silicon photovoltaics. Texturing of the front surface of silicon solar cells has been modeled and analysed with reference to the reduction in reflection co-efficient and increase in optical trapping. Significant enhancement in open circuit voltage and short circuit current has been achieved through such texturing of the front surface of mono-silicon solar cells. A proper optimisation of texture angle appears to be important for the best performance of the solar cells. An alternative way of reducing the surface reflection and enhancement of the cell parameters is to produce to passive front surface porous silicon layer. An analysis of the characteristics of a porous silicon layer shows that the morphology of the layer is an important design parameter. To realise the structures in practice, several methods are available, but many of this method are either not cost effective or commercially non available. In order to achieve good uniformity of pyramidal textured structure of the silicon surface, a mixture of NaOH/KOH and isopropyl alcohol (IPA) is generally used for texturization of mono crystalline solar cells. However, due to high cost of IPA, there is always search for alternative source. This source should not only be cost effective but should also result in reduced interfacial energy between silicon and ionised electrolyte chemical solution to achieve sufficient wet-ability for the silicon surface in order to enhance pyramid nucleation. Different novel texturization techniques for monocrystalline silicon are descried in this chapter including solar cells performance. For multicrystalline silicon (mc-Si) solar cells, the standard alkaline solution of NaOH/KOH does not produced textured surface of good quality so as to give satisfactory open circuit voltage and efficiency. This is because of grain boundary delineation with step formed between successive grains of different orientations. Different novel texturization techniques for multicrystalline silicon are also included in this book including solar cells performance.

Book Excellent Surface Passivation for High Efficiency C Si Solar Cells

Download or read book Excellent Surface Passivation for High Efficiency C Si Solar Cells written by Sara Bakhshi and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semiconductor surface clean is sometimes perceived as costly but long recognized as pivotal in determining the final semiconductor device performance and yield. In this contribution, we investigated the effectiveness of crystalline silicon surface cleaning by a simple UV-ozone process in comparison to the industry standard RCA clean for silicon photovoltaic applications. We present a unique method of processing the silicon surface effectively by UV-ozone cleaning. Despite being simple, UV-ozone cleaning results in a superior surface passivation quality that is comparable to high-quality RCA clean. When used as a stack dielectric--UV-ozone oxide overlaid by aluminum oxide--the thickness of UV-ozone oxide plays an important role in determining the passivation quality. Of all treatment times, 15 min of UV-ozone treatment results in an outstanding passivation quality, achieving the effective carrier lifetime of 3 ms and saturation current density of 5 fA/cm2. In addition, we present a simple and effective technique to extract values of electron/hole capture cross-section for the purpose of analyzing the interface passivation quality from already measured surface recombination parameters of saturation current density, interfacial trap density and total fixed charge, instead of measuring on the separately prepared metal-insulated-semiconductor (MIS) samples by the techniques: frequency-dependent parallel conductance or deep-level transient spectroscopy.

Book Crystalline Silicon Surface Passivation by Amorphous Silicon Compounds

Download or read book Crystalline Silicon Surface Passivation by Amorphous Silicon Compounds written by Roman Petres and published by Sudwestdeutscher Verlag Fur Hochschulschriften AG. This book was released on 2011-09 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solar cells based on crystalline silicon (c-Si) have the potential to make photovoltaic electricity cheaper than coal-based electric power generation within less than 10 years. The largest cost decrease potential on the cell level lies with improved electronic surface passivation. In this work, the current industry standard, amorphous silicon nitride (a-SiNx: H) deposited by Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD), is investigated and compared to amorphous silicon carbide, silicon carbonitride and silicon oxynitride films deposited by both high- and for the first time also low-frequency (LF) PECVD. It is shown that and an explanation offered as to why LF PECVD is capable of excellent surface passivation, comparable to remote-plasma results in literature and higher than previously published for LF PECVD. The achieved surface passivation quality is sufficient for dielectric rear-surface passivation without an underlying diffused back surface field. It is also shown that the purity grade of precursor gases used for film deposition can be lowered significantly without affecting cell efficiency and long-term stability on the module level, allowing for further cost reduction

Book High throughput Approaches to Optimization of Crystal Silicon Surface Passivation and Heterojunction Solar Cells

Download or read book High throughput Approaches to Optimization of Crystal Silicon Surface Passivation and Heterojunction Solar Cells written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We use a high-throughput (combinatorial) hot-wire chemical vapor deposition system to passivate the crystal silicon surface and to grow heterojunction silicon solar cells. We study the effectiveness of crystal surface treatments by atomic H or/and NHx radicals, followed by the growth of thin hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a Si:H) films. Treatment and layer properties such as times, thicknesses, and gas mixtures can be continuously graded, creating a two-dimensional sample with each variable varying in one direction. This results in high-throughput optimization of the processes. Effective carrier lifetime is measured by photoconductive decay to evaluate the effectiveness of the surface passivation by surface treatments. The effective carrier lifetime increases from about 5 [micro]s without passivation to about 24 [micro]s with an optimized surface treatment and thickness a-Si:H on single-sided c-Si. Transmission electron microscopy reveals that a-Si:H, a mixed phase, or epitaxial growth of thin-film Si depending on the surface treatment. Improvement in effective carrier lifetime correlates with an immediate a-Si:H growth on c-Si, rather than a mixed phase and epitaxial Si growth. We have obtained an efficiency of 13.4% on a non-textured single-sided heterojunction solar cell on p-type CZ-Si processed with optimized surface treatment.

Book Study of Surface Passivation Behavior of Crystalline Silicon Solar Cells

Download or read book Study of Surface Passivation Behavior of Crystalline Silicon Solar Cells written by Haider Ali and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To achieve efficiencies approaching the theoretical limit of 29.4% for industrially manufactured solar cells based on crystalline silicon, it is essential to have very low surface recombination velocities at both the front and rear surfaces of the silicon substrate. Typically, the substrate surfaces feature contacted and uncontacted regions, and recombination should be limited for both to maximize the energy conversion efficiency.

Book Surface Passivation of Crystalline Silicon by Dual Layer Amorphous Silicon Films

Download or read book Surface Passivation of Crystalline Silicon by Dual Layer Amorphous Silicon Films written by Dmitri S. Stepanov and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Response Surface Methodology is used in this work to optimize the deposition conditions of SiNx. Optimization of the response surface function yielded deposition conditions that materialized in a surface recombination velocity of less than 4cm/s. The BACH (Back Amorphous Crystalline silicon Heterojunction) cell concept makes use of this dual layer a-Si:H/SiN x stack to form a high efficiency photovoltaic device. The high quality passivating structure can result in the BACH solar cell device with more than 20% conversion efficiency. The probability of recombination of photogenerated electron hole pairs in crystalline silicon is governed by the density of surface defect states and the density of charge carriers. Depositions of intrinsic hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) in dc saddle field (DCSF) PECVD system and hydrogenated amorphous silicon nitride (SiNx) in rf PECVD system forms a dual layer stack on c-Si, which results in an excellent passivation of the surface and an anti-reflection coating.
