Download or read book Liberty s Fallen Generals written by Steven E. Siry and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2014-06-24 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From June 1775 to February 1781, during the American War of Independence, ten patriot generals died as a result of combat wounds. Their service and deaths spanned most of the wars duration and geographical expanse. The generals were a diverse group, with six born in America and four in Europe, three coming from professional military backgrounds, and the rest citizen-soldiers, mostly with limited military experience. As the colonists won their independence, the fallen generals became martyrs for the revolutionary ideals that would inspire later generations throughout the world. Libertys Fallen Generals is the first book to analyze these key military leaders service and the quality of their leadership in light of recent scholarship on the Revolutionary War. Each generals profile provides background on military and political events leading to his emergence, assesses the general as a military leader in the war, and examines the campaign that culminated in his battle-related death. A compelling study in leadership and sacrifice, Libertys Fallen Generals is essential reading for those interested in learning more about Americas earliest heroes.

Book Perceptions of Battle

Download or read book Perceptions of Battle written by Jeff Dacus and published by Brookline Books. This book was released on 2024-05-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new perspective on the Battle of Monmouth from the first-person accounts of those who took part in the battle. After spending a difficult winter at Valley Forge, George Washington led the Continental Army in pursuit of the British Army moving from Philadelphia to New York City. On June 28, 1778, the army caught up with the British and defeated them at Monmouth Court House. The principal figure in the battle is George Washington. His planning, his orders, and his actions on the battlefield dominate the story. After the first rebuff of his advance guard under Charles Lee, it is Washington who matched each movement of the enemy with decisive actions of his own. In doing so he attained a tactical victory on the battlefield that had major strategic implications. Because of his leadership, and the actions of his army, both he and the Continental Army gained renewed respect from Congress, the American people, and the enemy. Washington’s success solidified his position as the face of the Revolutionary effort. While the Congress was often ineffectual or even nonexistent, Washington and his army became the symbol of the Revolution. Modern authors have contributed greatly to our knowledge of the battle of Monmouth but in doing so have tried to interpret or analyze it through our modern point of view, losing sight of what happened, disregarding the perceptions, opinions, and conclusions of the people who took part in the battle and its aftermath. This book is different in that it uses only first-person accounts to reach conclusions or render judgments. In addition to changing the perceptions of the victory of the Continental Army, modern historians have distorted the story further through the court martial of Charles Lee in the aftermath of the battle, giving it undue importance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Wooster, Revolutionary War General, though woefully understudied, was one of the most influential figures in Colonial Connecticut. A study of his life is a study of the major events that shaped New England. The growth of his military leadership from the 1740s until his death in 1777, was coupled with active civic responsibility and entrepreneurial spirit. While raising a family in New Haven, Wooster sought active involvement in colonial politics and, at the same time, supported and encouraged New Haven's growing influence as a major port city. Tremendously devoted to the ideas of liberty, freedom, equality and the rights to property, David Wooster epitomized the 18th century American republican cause--a cause for which he sacrificed everything to defend and help secure. At the point in life when most people reached the age of retirement, as well as the ease of old age, Wooster, sixty-five years old at the outset of the Revolutionary War, once more donned the uniform of his home colony of Connecticut, and led troops in the field of battle. He had everything to lose, and nothing but liberty and freedom to gain. To him, however, these were more than ample reasons. This first biography of the influential figure is exhaustively researched from primary sources, covering Wooster's entire life and entire military and civic careers.

This book was released on 1903 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Jean Baptiste Antoine Marcellin Marbot (August 18, 1782 ? November 16, 1854), French soldier, son of General Jean Antoine Marbot (1754?1800), who died in the defence of Genoa under Masséna, was born at La Riviere (Correze). He joined the republican army as a volunteer in 1799. At the time there was no officer school for cadets. He rose rapidly to commissioned rank, and was aide-de-camp to Marshal Augereau, commanding the VII corps, in the war against Kingdom of Prussia and Russia in 1806-7. After this he served with great distinction in the Peninsular War under Lannes and Masséna, and showed himself to be a dashing leader of light cavalry in the Russian War of 1812 and the German campaign of the following year. After a slow recovery from the wounds he had received at Leipzig and Hanau, he was promoted general of brigade by Napoleon during the Hundred Days, and took part in, and was wounded at, the battle of Waterloo."--Wikipedia.
