Book Liberty Prosperity How the Saxons Created the Modern World

Download or read book Liberty Prosperity How the Saxons Created the Modern World written by John L. Hancock and published by . This book was released on 2015-10-04 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Jefferson claimed it to be the wisest and most perfect political system ever yet devised by the wit of man. Montesquieu said it was the most beautiful system ever created. That system is the Anglo-Saxon model. It is the only political/economic system that has a five hundred year track record of bringing freedom and prosperity to every society that embraces it. More significantly, it ended the 10,000 year cycle that kept the common man in a state of poverty and servitude. It was at the heart of the Dutch Golden Age, made Britain the leader of the largest empire known to man, is at the foundation of American freedom and prosperity, and is credited with creating modernity itself. Yet most people are unfamiliar with the system that has made the modern age the most freest and prosperous in the history of man. In Liberty & Prosperity bestselling author John L. Hancock will reconnect you with a history that was once known to "every schoolchild." Liberty & Prosperity will leave you wondering why we are abandoning a system with a proven track record of delivering the liberty and prosperity that other systems promise but never produce.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civilization is often equated with the story of human advancement and progress. Yet it is also the story of human oppression, exploitation, war, and empire. In our own time, modern global civilization has brought us to the brink of planetary destruction. By offering an understanding of our past, this book aims to provide a stimulus to considering a different future. Our Shadowed World considers how we have been brought to this point. It describes how the fragmented and conflicted state of humanity has "progressed" from the earliest city-states to the devastation of world war and holocaust--how civilization has brought its own form of savagery. What beliefs have underlain and motivated human action? How have humans tried to understand their world? Driven by the relentless quest for power, by greed, and by extreme beliefs, the human enterprise today has placed the very idea of civilization under threat, the subject of radical questioning. Despite a new ecological awareness dedicated to saving the planet from civilization's carelessness, and a preoccupation with the nature of apocalyptic thinking, a question mark looms over the very survival of humanity in its present state--a question mark that now overshadows the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War is often credited with giving birth to the modern American state. The demands of warfare led to the centralization of business and industry and to an unprecedented expansion of federal power. But the Civil War did more than that: as Melinda Lawson shows, it brought about a change in American national identity, redefining the relationship between the individual and the government. Though much has been written about the Civil War and the making of the political and economic American nation, this is the first comprehensive study of the role that the war played in the shaping of the cultural and ideological nation-state. In Patriot Fires, Lawson explains how, when threatened by the rebellious South, the North came together as a nation and mobilized its populace for war. With no formal government office to rally citizens, the job of defining the war in patriotic terms fell largely to private individuals or associations, each with their own motives and methods. Lawson explores how these "interpreters" of the war helped instill in Americans a new understanding of loyalty to country. Through efforts such as sanitary fairs to promote the welfare of soldiers, the war bond drives of Jay Cooke, and the establishment of Union Leagues, Northerners cultivated a new sense of patriotism rooted not just in the subjective American idea, but in existing religious, political, and cultural values. Moreover, Democrats and Republicans, Abolitionists, and Abraham Lincoln created their own understandings of American patriotism and national identity, raising debates over the meaning of the American "idea" to new heights. Examining speeches, pamphlets, pageants, sermons, and assemblies, Lawson shows how citizens and organizations constructed a new kind of nationalism based on a nation of Americans rather than a union of states-a European-styled nationalism grounded in history and tradition and celebrating the preeminence of the nation-state. Original in its insights and innovative in its approach, Patriot Fires is an impressive work of cultural and intellectual history. As America engages in new conflicts around the globe, Lawson shows us that issues addressed by nation builders of the nineteenth century are relevant once again as the meaning of patriotism continues to be explored.

Book excerpt: During the 1700s, the American Founding Fathers became acutely aware that all mankind is seeking the same three things. Regardless of race, religion, or nationality, all human beings long for: freedom, prosperity, and peace. Of course, freedom is not an individual or isolated state of being. Freedom can only be enjoyed in a society or nation that is free. By the same token, prosperity and the opportunity to enjoy the good things of life require that the government be structured so that the people have an opportunity to prosper throughout the country. In the same manner, peace is something that one cannot seek for himself alone. It is a condition where the family, the community, and the nation as a whole must enjoy peace or there is no lasting peace for the individual. And it is only when the spirit of a nation is conducive to peace that it can begin to spread outward until peace eventually encompasses the whole world. It is obvious from the writings of the Founders that they were wondering where they might find a form of government which would allow the people to achieve these three great human aspirations. It is also apparent from their writings that they finally concluded that no such government existed. So they sat down to create one. It was a painful undertaking, not only to rediscover the ancient success formula which they eventually uncovered, but to get modern man to accept it. As this study will disclose, one of the most disheartening and frustrating aspects of the American Founders’ Constitutional struggle was knowing what to do but encountering stiff resistance when they tried to get the people to do it. The fact that it did finally get into operation is one of the great miracles of modern history. In this study course we will discuss the origin and birth of the American nation, and how Jefferson discovered America’s great success formula. We will discuss the miracle at Philadelphia and the baptism of fire that the nation passed through before the United States could emerge with a strong Constitutional government—a miracle in modern times.

Book The Making of the Modern World

Download or read book The Making of the Modern World written by A. Macfarlane and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-12-17 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the start of the third Christian millennium we are aware of massive political, economic and ideological changes which condition the chances of liberty, wealth and equality. Yet it is surprisingly difficult for us to understand these forces, for we cannot see what surrounds us so closely. This book analyses our condition by looking at the work of two great thinkers, one of whom provides a deep historical perspective, the other a wide comparative analysis. F.W. Maitland (1850-1906) was more than the greatest professional historian of modern times, he was a philosopher who provides a brilliant sketch of how our strange world has come about, particularly in his work on associations and trusts. Yukichi Fukuzawa (1835-1901) more than any other created the institutions of modern Japan. As an outsider he provides a brilliant insight into the heart of the new capitalist and industrial civilization which had emerged in the west.
