Download or read book Of Labour and Liberty written by Race Mathews and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What will the future of work, social freedom, and employment look like? In an era of increased job insecurity and social dislocation, is it possible to reshape economics along democratic lines in a way that genuinely serves the interests of the community? Of Labour and Liberty arises from Race Mathews’s half-century and more of political and public policy involvement. It responds to evidence of a precipitous decline in active citizenship, resulting from a loss of confidence in politics, politicians, parties, and parliamentary democracy; the rise of "lying for hire" lobbyism; increasing concentration of capital in the hands of a wealthy few; and corporate wrongdoing and criminality. It also questions whether political democracy can survive indefinitely in the absence of economic democracy—of labor hiring capital rather than capital labor. It highlights the potential of the social teachings of the Catholic Church and the now largely forgotten Distributist political philosophy and program that originated from them as a means of bringing about a more equal, just, and genuinely democratic social order. It describes and evaluates Australian attempts to give effect to Distributism, with special reference to Victoria. And with an optimistic view to future possibilities it documents the support and advocacy of Pope Francis, and ownership by some 83,000 workers of the Mondragon cooperatives in Spain. This book will interest scholars and students of Catholic social teaching, history, economics, industrial relations, and business and management.

Book Liberty s War

  • Author : Herman E. Melton
  • Publisher : Naval Institute Press
  • Release : 2017-08-15
  • ISBN : 1682473074
  • Pages : 152 pages

Download or read book Liberty s War written by Herman E. Melton and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the dark days of World War II, merchant mariners made heroic contributions to the eventual Allied victory and suffered tremendous casualties in so doing. Among these were the engineers who toiled deep in the bowels of the ship and suffered appalling casualties. After the war, engineering personnel were unlikely to talk about their experiences, let alone write them down. These modest and self-effacing men were more comfortable in a world of turbines and pistons, so they seldom brought their stories forward. Liberty’s War sets out to explore the experiences of one such engineer, Herman Melton, from his time as a cadet at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy through his experiences at sea as a third assistant engineer. Melton’s story is representative of the thousands of Merchant Marine engineers who served on board Liberty ships during the war. Like many young Americans, he sought to do his part, and in 1942 he obtained an appointment to the newly created U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York. After graduating from the academy in 1944, he shipped out to the Pacific Theatre, surviving the sinking of his Liberty ship, the SS Antoine Saugrain, and its top-secret cargo.

Book Q s Historical Legacy 6 Tales of Ardevora I

Download or read book Q s Historical Legacy 6 Tales of Ardevora I written by N. P. Cooper and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-08-16 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the sixth in the series, contains Q's retelling of the adventures of two St. Ives fishermen who were imprisoned by Napoleon for 10 years together with their diaries and an introduction by, the Cornish fishing magnate, Sir Edward Hain who retraced their 1200 mile march on the eve of the outbreak of the First World War. The diaries also cast a fascinating light on now, almost, forgotten events such as the arrival in Cornwall of refugees from the Portuguese civil war, electoral scandals and bribery in Cornwall, storms and shipwrecks. Now surpassed in fame as a writer by his daughter's best friend, Daphne du Maurier, Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch was the pre-eminent Cornish writer of Victorian and Edwardian times and founder of the school of English Literature at Cambridge University. He is of particular interest since his fiction was very often based on factual events which have now passed from memory.
