Book Regional Trade Agreements Versus Broad Liberalization

Download or read book Regional Trade Agreements Versus Broad Liberalization written by Mr.Athanasios Vamvakidis and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1998-03-01 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should a closed economy open its trade to all countries or limit itself to participation in regional trade agreements (RTAs)? Based on time-series evidence for a data set for 1950-92, this paper estimates and compares the growth performance of countries that liberalized broadly and those that joined an RTA. The comparisons show that economies grew faster after broad liberalization, both in the short and long run, but slower after participation in an RTA. Economies also had higher investment shares after broad liberalization, but lower ones after joining an RTA. The policy implications support broad liberalization.

Book Dynamics of Regional Integration

Download or read book Dynamics of Regional Integration written by Uwe Walz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deepening and enlarging regional integration blocs is high on the political agenda, as can be seen most notably in the last decade of the European in tegration process. The effects of this process have been studied extensively. But, until recently, these studies have been limited to the theoretical anal ysis of static effects of regional integration. The revival of growth theory has, however, in principle provided a set of models and tools which allow to investigate the dynamic effects of regional integration. At the same time, the "new regional economics" (or economic geography) literature allowing to focus on the special features of regional integration and integration blocs has emerged. The aim of this study is to merge endogenous growth approaches with "new regional economics" models in order to investigate various aspects of the long-run effects of regional integration in a dynamic general equilibrium framework. It is needless to say that such an analysis can cover only selected issues and leaves others aside. It is the purpose of the present study, how ever, to look at both types of regional integration: the dynamic effects of a deepening of the integration process as well as of an enlargement of the integration bloc. This is done on the basis of an investigation of empirical regularities of regional developments in an integration bloc (mainly in the European Union).

Book Assessment and Measurement of Regional Integration

Download or read book Assessment and Measurement of Regional Integration written by Philippe De Lombaerde and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-09-27 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique examination of why the quest for global free trade often forgets that trade liberalization is organized regionally rather than multilaterally. There are now more than 250 regional integration initiatives and this number is steadily increasing. This trend raises a key question: What is the impact of regional integration, both for the countries involved and for those excluded from regional integration schemes? Using a combined economic, political science and scientific approach, this book explores how regional integration can be measured and evaluated and delivers comprehensive answers. It looks at the methodological problems involved in designing monitoring tools for regional integration in a systematic way and makes a number of concrete suggestions for designing and organising systems of indicators of regional integration. It also offers a critical overview of available indicators and tools and presents crucial new monitoring instruments. This book will be of great interest to students and researchers of international relations and economics as well as policy makers and professionals within international and regional organizations.

Book Regional Integration and Global Free Trade

Download or read book Regional Integration and Global Free Trade written by Mark S. LeClair and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent trade initiatives suggest that there is renewed interest in forming tariff-free regional trading zones. Running concurrent with this move toward regional integration is the multilateral process of global trade liberalization. This text looks at the two issues. Chapter one examines the inherent conflict between the two main approaches to reducing barriers to trade - economic integration, and multilateralism. Chapter two provides a theoretical framework for evaluating the relative accomplishments of both regional trading blocs and multilateral free trade. Chapter three utilizes a number of theoretical constructs to evaluate the effects of regional trading arrangements, and discusses the trade history of the European Union. Chapter four provides an analysis of the trade effects of tariff reductions achieved under the GATT system, and chapter five provides recommendations for ensuring continued progress in multilateral tariff reductions under the banner of the World Trade Organization.
