Book excerpt: The Liangzhu culture (circa 3300-2300 B.C.) was first discovered in the 1930s in the Zhejiang province of China, which included the coastal areas around the mouth of the Yangtze River. From the 1970s to the 1990s, a large number of jade artifacts of outstanding quality were unearthed there. It became the biggest discovery of jade artifacts of the twentieth century. During last forty years, archeological development provided scholars with evidence that not only revealed the evolutionary course of Chinese civilization, but it also confirmed the history of China's five thousand years of civilization. Because of their studies, our knowledge of these ancient people and their cultures expanded considerably. Liangzhu jade pieces are the biggest and most brilliant examples of art that began during the Neolithic period. They are the most important and the most well-preserved remnants of their culture. Jade helps us to understand the Liangzhu's beliefs, the way they thought, their perceptions of life and their social systems. Cong tubes and bi discs are the most signature jade forms, and these two jade forms are the majority of Liangzhu jade. We know that the Liangzhu jade must have been very important to them, but for a long time we could not identify the meaning of them. In this book, the author introduces the research done by Hayashi Minao, who was the most respected and studied scholar of the twentieth century. He explained clearly what were the meaning of the cong tubes and bi discs. More than one hundred illustrations and photographs of unique jade artworks open a unique window of appreciation for the most extraordinary neolithic jade. Through the varieties and diversities of this jade collection, we are getting close to the true picture of their unity in a diverse society, and through their outstanding quality of their jade, we are sharing the power of prayer from the Liangzhu people.

With a wide sphere of influence centred near present-day Hangzhou City, Liangzhu City is considered one of the earliest urban centres in prehistoric China. The archaeological ruins of Liangzhu City were added to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List in July 2019. Every piece is unique, yet distinctive and easily recognizable . Through this more than seventy pieces of jades from several collections, we are attempting to present the heart and soul of that culture's artisans. By detailing the various material and the technique used, we can see the common threads of Liangzhu jade. Further, By looking deeply into its main motifs- which did not change much during the 1000 years period- we can divide the Liangzhu jade into three periods: early, middle, and end. Their dedicated,densely packed, finely incised lines were beyond earlier artistry. And we are still uncertain what kind of tools were used 4000 years ago. Even today, artisans can't easily duplicate those lines. By merging ourselves into Liangzhu jade, we can feel the power of prayer. When people use their souls to plead to God, they can make the impossible possible, Which we learned from the Liangzhu people.

The study begins with an overview of ancient archaeology in order to identify nascent religious ideologies in various Neolithic Cultures and early Chinese historical eras including the Shang dynasty (1300-1050 BCE) and Zhou Dynasty(1000-221 BCE) up until the era of the First Emperor (221-210 BCE) Part Two treats Confucianism as a religious tradition examining its scriptures, images, temples and rituals. Adopted as the state ideology in the Han dynasty, Confucian ideas permeated society for over two thousand years. Filial piety, ethical behavior and other principles shaped the pictorial arts. Part Three considers the various schools of Daoist belief and their expression in art. The ideas of a utopian society and the pursuit of immortality characterize this religion from its earliest phase. Daoism has an elaborate pantheon and ritualistic art, as well as a secular tradition best expressed in monochrome ink painting. Part Four covers the development of Buddhist art beginning with its entry into China in the second century. Its monuments—comprised largely of cave temples carved high in the mountains along the frontiers of China and large metropolitan temples —provide evidence of its evolution including the adoption of savior cults of the Buddha of the Western Paradise, the Buddha of the Future, the rise of Ch’an (Zen) and esoteric Buddhism. In their development, these various religious traditions interacted, sharing art, architecture, iconography and rituals. By the twelfth century a stage of syncretism merged all three traditions into a popular religion. All the religions are reviving after their extirpation during the Cultural Revolution. Using historical records and artistic evidence, much of which has not been published, this study examines their individual and shared manner of worshipping the divine forces.
