Download or read book Eltanin written by Leah Ross and published by Leah Ross. This book was released on 2023-02-10 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mission was simple—race to the mayday coordinates, rescue his best friend, and bring him home. But, like so much in Ethan’s life, simplicity is a luxury beyond his reach. He’s long been used to the untethered insanity of life as an Explorer, but never has he failed this badly. Never has the soulless void taken his credibility and someone he loved. Space had never broken him. Until now. At twenty-two with a promising career, an enviable piloting record, and the freedom to go anywhere in the universe, Ethan Ryker should have everything he could possibly want. Except he’s just lost the one person who grounded him and made the unbearable loneliness of endless space tolerable. More alone than he’s ever been, he’s now trapped on the starbase Eltanin, suffering through the grief and mental trauma that’s robbed him of the authorization to pilot a starcruiser. Even worse, he’s been assigned a partner he doesn’t like, can’t relate to, and doesn’t want invading his personal life. The LIAM program is supposed to help pilots just like him cope with loss and stress, but all Ethan wants to do is get back in his cruiser and leave all his issues behind. Too bad running away from his problems isn’t an option. LIAM-622 is the promising first production model of a groundbreaking new type of autonomous metahuman. After centuries of research in artificial intelligence, he’s the culmination of the latest advances in humanoid technology, built as a sympathetic companion for a human partner. His purpose is to address the deteriorating mental health of traumatized Galactic Explorers, enabling them to heal and return to their missions. He’s supposed to be as lifelike as possible, but not everyone appreciates his efforts to learn from and emulate humans—including the man he’s been partnered with. Liam wants to help Ethan. He has all the resources he needs. But what he doesn’t have is the understanding required to empathize with his partner’s plight. To Ethan, Liam is nothing more than a fancy computer, and it’ll take more than pretty words and an even prettier face to change his mind. Ethan and Liam are opposing forces, thrust together in an endeavor neither of them could have navigated on their own. If they learn to understand each other, they could build the foundation for the new frontier of human advancement. And if they fail, it could mean more than the loss of a project. It could set humanity back hundreds of years. Because it’s not only AI the detractors are trying to oppress. They’re coming for the FGIA itself. Book Heights of Reflection

Download or read book Heights of Reflection written by Sean Moore Ireton and published by Camden House. This book was released on 2012 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines the lure of mountains in German literature, philosophy, film, music, and culture from the Middle Ages to the twenty-first century. Mountains have always stirred the human imagination, playing a crucial role in the cultural evolution of peoples around the globe and becoming infused with meaning in the process. Beyond their geographical-geological significance, mountains affect the topography of the mind, whether as objects of peril or attraction, of spiritual enlightenment or existential fulfillment, of philosophical contemplation or aesthetic inspiration. This volume challenges the oversimplified assumption that human interaction with mountains is a distinctly modern development, one that began with the empowerment of the individual in the wake of Enlightenment rationalism and Romantic subjectivity. These essays by European and North American scholars examine the lure of mountains in German literature, philosophy, film, music, and culture from the Middle Ages to the present, with a focus on the interaction between humans and the alpineenvironment. The contributors consider mountains not as mere symbolic tropes or literary metaphors, but as constituting a tangible reality that informs the experiences and ideas of writers, naturalists, philosophers, filmmakers, and composers. Overall, this volume seeks to provide multiple answers to questions regarding the cultural significance of mountains as well as the physical practice of climbing them. Book The Book of Otto and Liam

Download or read book The Book of Otto and Liam written by Paul Griner and published by Sarabande Books. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liam is the boy, lying in the hospital, in grave condition, a bullet lodged in his head. Otto is his father, a commercial artist whose marriage has collapsed in the wake of the disaster. Paul Griner’s brave novel taps directly into the vein of a uniquely American tragedy: the school shooting. We know these grotesque and sorrowful events too well. Thankfully, the characters in this drama are finely drawn human beings—those who gain our empathy, those who commit the unspeakable acts, and those conspiracy fanatics who launch a concerted campaign to convince the world that the shooting was a hoax. The Book of Otto and Liam is a suspenseful, edge-of-your-seat read and, at the same time, it is a meditation on the forms evil can take, from the irredeemable act of the shooter himself, to the anger and devastation it causes in the victims’ families. Griner has managed to make an amazing, incredibly powerful book, one that is like no other.

Book excerpt: This story takes place in Dublin, Ireland where the culture, business practices, government and banking ethics of 2003 through 2008 could well have allowed this fictional tale to be a reality. We will never know. April, 2007. Peter and Liam Higgins along with their wives have made four decisions. First, they have acquired all the detailed family information they need. Two, their procedures are simple and low risk. Three, they have acquired all necessary identifications with all equipment in place. Four, they will kidnap the children. The three grandparents of the four children are wealthy and will have no problem wiring nine million Euros to a Swiss bank account for the childrens release. It is because most of the available millions have never been reported for tax that the families will not contact the police nor undertake any effort to identify the kidnappers. The children and their Nanny are comfortably housed in a warehouse with Five Days provisions. Kidnapped after school on a Friday their food runs out at noon Wednesday. The money must be deposited by Tuesday as the kidnappers want twenty-four hours before wiring the location of the children. It is up to the parents whether or not the children go hungry. Their plan is successful with most of the money changed into stocks and United States T-bills. The parents get word of the childrens location by e-mail from Frankfort, Germany. One Higgins family heads for Spain, the other for the United States. The greed that permeated Dublins elite has allowed the Higgins to commit the perfect crime. It is learned one of the grandparents, Seamus Mc Shane, has hired a London hit man to get back his share of the money and eliminate the threat of additional blackmail by the kidnappers. Knowing how Mc Shane would react a private detective, Robert Sullivan, has been hired by one of the families to try and identify the kidnappers and following learning of Mc Shanes action protect them from harm. It is up to Robert to locate Peter and Liam Higgins before the hit man does and make sure they are not harmed as that would trigger the familys tax frauds becoming public. Exposure of the incriminating evidence could ruin the three families. Criminal prosecutions would be the result. Will Robert Sullivan be successful?
