Book The State of Food and Agriculture 2022

Download or read book The State of Food and Agriculture 2022 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-11-01 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Automation has been shaping world agriculture since the early twentieth century. Motorized mechanization has brought significant benefits in terms of improved productivity, reduced drudgery and more efficient allocation of labour, but also some negative environmental impacts. More recently, a new generation of digital agricultural automation technologies has appeared, with the potential to further enhance productivity, as well as resilience, while also addressing the environmental sustainability challenges driven by past mechanization. The State of Food and Agriculture 2022 looks into the drivers of agricultural automation, including the more recent digital technologies. Based on 27 case studies, the report analyses the business case for adoption of digital automation technologies in different agricultural production systems across the world. It identifies several barriers preventing inclusive adoption of these technologies, particularly by small-scale producers. Key barriers are low digital literacy and lack of an enabling infrastructure, such as connectivity and access to electricity, in addition to financial constraints. Based on the analysis, the publication suggests policies to ensure that disadvantaged groups in developing regions can benefit from agricultural automation and that automation contributes to sustainable and resilient agrifood systems.

Book The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2023

Download or read book The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2023 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2023-07-12 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides an update on global progress towards the targets of ending hunger (SDG Target 2.1) and all forms of malnutrition (SDG Target 2.2) and estimates on the number of people who are unable to afford a healthy diet. Since its 2017 edition, this report has repeatedly highlighted that the intensification and interaction of conflict, climate extremes and economic slowdowns and downturns, combined with highly unaffordable nutritious foods and growing inequality, are pushing us off track to meet the SDG 2 targets. However, other important megatrends must also be factored into the analysis to fully understand the challenges and opportunities for meeting the SDG 2 targets. One such megatrend, and the focus of this year’s report, is urbanization. New evidence shows that food purchases in some countries are no longer high only among urban households but also among rural households. Consumption of highly processed foods is also increasing in peri-urban and rural areas of some countries. These changes are affecting people’s food security and nutrition in ways that differ depending on where they live across the rural–urban continuum. This timely and relevant theme is aligned with the United Nations General Assembly-endorsed New Urban Agenda, and the report provides recommendations on the policies, investments and actions needed to address the challenges of agrifood systems transformation under urbanization and to enable opportunities for ensuring access to affordable healthy diets for everyone.

Book Agriculture and Environment Perspectives in Intelligent Systems

Download or read book Agriculture and Environment Perspectives in Intelligent Systems written by Andrés Muñoz and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eventual aim when applying digital technologies in agriculture is to replace or reduce the human labor required for agricultural production. Large amounts of heterogeneous data are essential for integration studies of automated agriculture, and the digitalization of agriculture is helping to fulfill the demand for this data, but management of the data gathered presents its own challenges. That is where the Intelligent Environment (IE) paradigm comes into play to guide the design of the systems, techniques and algorithms able to analyze the data and provide recommendations for farmers, managers and other stakeholders. This book, Agriculture and Environment Perspectives in Intelligent Systems, is divided into 5 chapters. Chapter 1 explores the use of intelligent systems in Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) facilities; Chapter 2 reviews the adoption of intelligent systems in the research field of biomonitoring; Chapter 3 proposes an intelligent system to acquire and pre-process data for precision agriculture applications; Chapter 4 illustrates the use of intelligent algorithms to make more efficient use of scarce resources such as water; and Chapter 5 focuses on the generation of intelligent models to predict frosts in crops in south-eastern Spain. There is still a need to bridge the gap between the needs of farmers, environmental managers and stakeholders and the solutions offered by information and communication technology. This book will be of interest to all those working in the field.
