Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The existence of death anxiety among nursing students negatively impacts their care of dying patients. The literature indicates that preparation for end-of-life care is inconsistent and insufficient in undergraduate nursing curricula, resulting in patient avoidance and inadequate end-of life nursing care. The purpose of this clinical project was to evaluate the effectiveness of an evidence- based educational program on death anxiety levels among students in a baccalaureate nursing program. The forty hour program was carried out over two nonconsecutive weekends and was comprised of experiential, clinical and didactic interventions. Transformative learning theory was used in the implementation of interventions, and the Model for Evidence-Based Practice Change was used to guide the project. The outcome demonstrated a 16% mean reduction in death anxiety levels among the eighteen students who participated, as measured by the Templer Death Anxiety Scale. The project demonstrated that death anxiety levels among nursing students can be effectively reduced through systematic implementation of experiential, clinical and didactic interventions. Inclusion of end-of-life education within nursing curricula can reduce death anxiety among students and precipitate better care for terminal patients. Key words: nursing students; death anxiety; end-of-life care; palliative care; nursing curricula; death education " -- Abstract.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine levels of death anxiety perceived by a group of non-hospice nurses and compare them with levels perceived by a group of hospice nurses. A convenience sample of twenty subjects participated in this study. This sample consisted of ten nurses who worked within the hospice setting and ten who worked within the acute care medical surgical setting. Nurses who had sustained the death of a close family member within the past year were disqualified. The sample was obtained from a local private hospital and two local hospices. Data were collected using a Demographic Data Sheet and a modified likert conversion of Templer's Death Anxiety Scale. The research design was non-experimental. The theoretical framework utilized was Peplau's model of nursing practice. The dependent variables were the resulting scores on the Death Anxiety Scale.
