Book Focus on Leukemia Research

Download or read book Focus on Leukemia Research written by Rafael M. Romero and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book brings together leading research from around the globe. Leukaemia is cancer that begins in blood cells. In people with leukaemia, the bone marrow produces abnormal white blood cells. The abnormal cells are leukaemia cells. At first, leukaemia cells function almost normally. In time, they may crowd out normal white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. The scope of the book includes the four common types of leukaemia: chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (chronic lymphoblastic leukaemia, CLL) - most often affecting people over age 55; chronic myeloid leukaemia (chronic myelogenous leukaemia, CML) - affects mainly adults; acute lymphocytic leukaemia (acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, ALL) - the most common type of leukaemia in young children; and acute myeloid leukaemia (acute myelogenous leukaemia, AML) - which occurs in both adults and children. New advances in diagnosis, pathogenesis and therapy are also presented.

Book Biology and Treatment of Leukemia and Bone Marrow Neoplasms

Download or read book Biology and Treatment of Leukemia and Bone Marrow Neoplasms written by Vinod Pullarkat and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-09 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a concise update on current understanding of the biology of acute and chronic leukemias and other bone marrow neoplasms, including myelodysplastic and myeloproliferative disorders, and explores new and emerging treatments. There is a particular focus on the molecular abnormalities that are drivers of leukemia and on their detection by modern molecular techniques. Knowledge of the ways in which genomic and metabolic abnormalities in the hematologic neoplasms affect prognosis and treatment decision making is reviewed. Detailed attention is devoted to targeted therapies, including novel drugs, and to potential targets for future drug development. In addition, readers find in-depth discussion of cellular and antibody-based immunotherapies as well as the role of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in the treatment of leukemias and bone marrow malignancies. The book is of special interest for hematologists, oncologists, and cancer researchers; it is also of value for hematology trainees and medical students.

Book Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Research Focus

Download or read book Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Research Focus written by Chadi Nabhan and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (or "chronic lymphoid leukaemia"), known for short as CLL, is a type of leukaemia in which too many lymphocytes are produced. Although the malignant lymphocytes in CLL may look normal and mature, they are not and these cells may not cope effectively with infection. CLL is the most common form of leukaemia in adults. Men are twice as likely to develop CLL as women. However, the key risk factor is age. Over 75% of new cases are diagnosed in patients over age 50. This book presents important research from around the world in this field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leading cancer specialist tells the powerful stories of 3 adult leukemia patients—shining new light on the hidden history of the disease and the drugs developed to treat it. “A look at leukemia patients’ fear, survival and grace while fighting the disease . . . a quiet chronicle of life with and beyond leukemia, and sometimes life’s end.” —The Washington Post When you are told that you have leukemia, your world stops. Your brain can’t function. You are asked to make decisions about treatment almost immediately, when you are not in your right mind. And yet you pull yourself together and start asking questions. Beside you is your doctor, whose job it is to solve the awful puzzle of bone marrow gone wrong. The two of you are in it together. In When Blood Breaks Down, Mikkael Sekeres, a leading cancer specialist, takes readers on the journey that patient and doctor travel together. Sekeres, who writes regularly for the “Well” section of The New York Times, tells the compelling stories of three people who receive diagnoses of adult leukemia within hours of each other: Joan, a 48-year-old surgical nurse, a caregiver who becomes a patient; David, a 68-year-old former factory worker who bows to his family’s wishes and pursues the most aggressive treatment; and Sarah, a 36-year-old pregnant woman who must decide whether to undergo chemotherapy and put her fetus at risk. We join the intimate conversations between Sekeres and his patients, and we watch as he teaches trainees. Along the way, Sekeres also explores leukemia in its different forms and the development of drugs to treat it—describing, among many other fascinating details, the invention of the bone marrow transplant (first performed experimentally on beagles) and a treatment that targets the genetics of leukemia. The lessons to be learned from leukemia, Sekeres shows, are not merely medical; they teach us about courage and grace and defying the odds.

Book excerpt: The 11 th meeting in "Modern Trends in Human Leukemia" took place from June 19 to 21, 1994 in Wilsede in the middle of the Liineburger Heide, South of Hamburg. Interwoven with the Leukemia program was the Nato-sponsored Symposium of the ASI-Series "Gene Technology in Analysis of Malignant and Inherited Human Diseases Related to Development" . The Wilsede meeting was continued on a ship of the Neva leading through lake Ladoga and lake Onega. The topics of both meetings included discussion on recent progress isolation and development of hematopoietic stem cells, genes crucial for development and diseases, methods of gene transfer, application of gene transfer; oncogenes and anti-oncogenes as targets for gene therapy; receptors and their ligands in normal development and diseases, immunology and immunotherapy, radiation biology, clinical leukemias and bone marrow transplantation. The Nato workshop concentrated not only on analysis of cell systems useful for somatic gene therapy, but also on actual themes directly related to correction of human diseases. The latter aspects emphasized themes related to biotechnology, the first part was by nature more general. We also included a few contributions that discussed perspectives for the future of gene therapy and possible relationships to evolution.
