Book excerpt: Though Elsie Reyes Cook has traveled throughout Asia as a missionary, served as a high-profile executive at CBN Asia, while also being sought-after church speaker and counselor-her early beginnings hardly promised such a life of ministry. As a painfully shy, awkward and insecure girl growing up in a humble Philippines provincial household, Elsie often preferred to remain quietly in the shadows. But upon becoming born again, she gradually acquired a boldness that surprised even her. Guided by Romans 8:28 as a life verse, Elsie has experienced amazing aEURoehighsaEUR (success in ministry and academia) as well as aEURoelowsaEUR (attacks from co-workers and physical attacks while in India). Still, her story is a testimony to the fact that God is sovereign and through it aEURallaEUR is able work aEURoeallaEUR things for good

Download or read book The Identity and Mission of the Korean American Church written by Enoch Jinsik Kim and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2024-07-02 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume interweaves contributions from a group of scholars brought together for the 2022 Korean Studies Center Symposium at Fuller Theological Seminary. The collection provides a forum for scholars of Korean American Protestant churches to address key challenges concerning the sociocultural and theological formation of identity and mission as these churches continue to navigate their place in society in relation to others, including Korean churches in South Korea, mainline churches in the US, other ethnic churches, and multiethnic churches. The chapters address the following issues: who the Korean American churches are; God's vision for the Korean American churches; how to interpret Korean Americans' journey in immigrant church history; how heritage sustained them and will keep them; what the immigrant church should know in this post-pandemic time; and the hopes of the next generation.

Book Mission as Globalization

Download or read book Mission as Globalization written by David W. Scott and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-07-26 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through an examination of Methodist mission to Southeast Asia at the turn of the twentieth century, this broad-ranging book unites the history of globalization with the history of Christian mission and the history of Southeast Asia. The book explores the international connections forged by the Methodist Episcopal Church’s Malaysia Mission between 1885 and 1915, putting them in the context of a wave of globalization that was sweeping the world at that time, including significant developments in Southeast Asia. To establish intellectual connections between the study of globalization and this historical setting, the book suggests six metaphors for understanding the mission. Each metaphor is based on some aspect of secular globalization: the Methodist connection as a migratory network, mission agencies as multinational corporations, the Malaysia Mission as a franchise system, the Methodist Episcopal Church as a media conglomerate, mission institutions as civil society organizations, and Methodist mission as a global vision. In chapters exploring each metaphor separately, the book reviews how each form of secular globalization functions to create transnational connections before examining the details of how the Malaysia Mission functioned in a similar fashion. Along the way, the book investigates the lives of all involved in the mission: missionaries, church members of the mission, and mission supporters. Although Southeast Asia (including the Straits Settlements, Federated Malay States, Sarawak, and Netherlands Indies) and the United States are important geographic foci for the book, India, China, Britain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Germany, Australia, and Canada all have parts to play. In exploring these metaphors, the book draws on several scholarly fields including migration studies, business history, media studies, political theory, and cultural history, blending them together into a social history of the mission. By so doing, it identifies both ways in which the effects of Christian mission paralleled other globalizing forces and unique contributions Christian mission made to turn-of-the-twentieth-century globalization.

Book excerpt: The Closer the Bone The Closer the Bone, the third adventure of sleuths Clarice Campion and Miss Letty, finds Clarice, husband Otis, and Miss Letty, former star of the Silent Screen, acting as exchange innkeepers at Flanagan’s Guest House in Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland. From the first they are locked between two feuding families, the Quinns and the Donovans. Seamus Quinn is found stabbed and bleeding out on Flanagan’s doorstep although the trail of blood leads from the Donovans’. Assorted disparate winter boarders add fuel of their own. Had Seamus tried to blackmail someone? Why do people keep disappearing and reappearing at Flanagan’s? And why does Fergus Flanagan return abruptly from his odyssey in Florida? What is he hiding? And who puts foxglove in his tea? Clarice and Miss Letty’s search for answers leads them to a convent in Cork, a tinker camp on the Beara Peninsula, and Athlone, home of two of their boarders. All in all they consult T.D. Doyle, the representative for Bray; an Anglican vicar; and a tabloid journalist. But the murderer has plans for Clarice: an ‘accidental’ fall onto the DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) tracks which run behind Flanagan’s. Will Clarice escape and reveal secrets that will rock Ireland to its core? Fans of Make Old Bones and Bred in the Bone won’t want to miss this latest installment in the series.
