Book Romance for Sale in Early Modern England

Download or read book Romance for Sale in Early Modern England written by Steve Mentz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major claim made by this study is that early modern English prose fiction self-consciously invented a new form of literary culture in which professional writers created books to be printed and sold to anonymous readers. It further claims that this period's narrative innovations emerged not solely from changes in early modern culture like print and the book market, but also from the rediscovery of a forgotten late classical text from North Africa, Heliodorus's Aethiopian History. In making these claims, Steve Mentz provides a comprehensive historicist and formalist account of prose romance, the most important genre of Elizabethan fiction. He explores how authors and publishers of prose fiction in late sixteenth-century England produced books that combined traditional narrative forms with a dynamic new understanding of the relationship between text and audience. Though prose fiction would not dominate English literary culture until the eighteenth century, Mentz demonstrates that the form began to invent itself as a distinct literary kind in England nearly two centuries earlier. Examining the divergent but interlocking careers of Robert Greene, Sir Philip Sidney, Thomas Lodge, and Thomas Nashe, Mentz traces how through differing commitments to print culture and their respective engagements with Heliodoran romance, these authors helped make the genre of prose fiction culturally and economically viable in England. Mentz explores how the advent of print and the book market changed literary discourse, influencing new conceptions of what he calls 'middlebrow' narrative and new habits of reading and writing. This study draws together three important strains of current scholarly inquiry: the history of the book and print culture, the study of popular fiction, and the re-examination of genre and influence. It also connects early modern fiction with longer histories of prose fiction and the rise of the modern novel.

Book excerpt: It is time to install a cultural vision of what is European alongside the technocratic definition. Modern European culture is the only world culture that has developed an ironic, sentimental relation to its cultural heritage. In the knowledge that the values of mediaeval Christianity, the Renaissance, the Reformation and the Enlightenment are no longer sustainable, European culture is at the same time aware that if its heritage is not cultivated, it will lose its identity. Modern Europe's relationship to its tradition is rooted in Romanticism. Romanticism critically reflects the other epochs and events in European history in terms of their suitability as founding myths for European modernism. A future European cultural science must examine what elements of the heritage of European nation-states is suitable as a European founding myth - for a Europe of the future, and not of the past. This volume provides evidence that Romanticism constitutes one of the most important founding myths of modern Europe. German text.

Book Lucian of Samosata Greek Writer and Roman Citizen

Download or read book Lucian of Samosata Greek Writer and Roman Citizen written by Francesca Mestre and published by Edicions Universitat Barcelona. This book was released on 2010 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lucian was a man of letters and thinker who stood at the meeting point of three cultures: the Oriental culture of the Roman province of Syria; Greek culture as a result of his own background and the cultural tradition of the education he had received; and Roman culture, since in his lifetime it was Rome that exercised political power and, even though it adopted Greek culture as its own, it still made a clear contribution to this world. This three-faceted cultural outlook to Lucian of Samosata is of great interest for the study of the Roman Empire, with all its implications for the coexistence of peoples, for preserving identities, for creating or recreating identifying traits, some of which separated peoples while others brought them together when faced with alien forces, as well as for fusion, osmosis and syncretism. Moreover, this ample series of data provides us with information not only about cultural aspects, but also as regards social behaviour, ways of exercising and understanding political power, customs, religion, spectacles and celebrations..The book is divided into two sections, one focusing on Lucian as a writer, and one dealing with Lucian as a citizen of the Empire.
