Book On the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass

Download or read book On the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass written by Robert Bellarmine and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-21 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Robert Bellarmine was one of the best known of the Counter-Reformation theologians by both friend and foe. His apologetic writings were the most widely read treatises on theological subjects during the 17th century, and they also brought numerous conversions to the Catholic faith. Now for the first time, St. Robert's amazing treatises are available to you in English! In this treatise on the Sacrifice of the Mass, St. Robert divides his work into two topics: That the Mass is a Sacrifice, and secondly, the nature of that Sacrifice, namely that the Mass is propitiatory, beneficial to others, and that the ceremonies of the Mass are ancient and pleasing to God. St. Robert takes the fight to the Protestants on their own ground, defending the Mass from Scripture and how the Church Fathers understood it. Then he argues from the consensus of Greek and Latin Fathers and the whole history of the Church to defend the Mass as a sacrifice instituted by Christ Himself. "St. Robert Bellarmine is a masterful defender of the Catholic faith, a prince of apologists. The controversy over whether the Holy Mass is a true and proper sacrifice was-and is-among the most hotly debated questions dividing Catholics and Protestants. Bellarmine's almost unbelievable erudition is on full display as he thoroughly proves the Catholic doctrine by marshaling arguments from Scripture, the Fathers of the Church, and human reason. But the real thrill for lovers and scholars of liturgy comes in his defense of the various prayers and ceremonies of the Roman Rite of Mass. Here is a commentary on the Tridentine Mass by one of the greatest theologians of the Tridentine era." -Dr. John Joy, President of the St. Albert the Great Center for Scholastic Studies "St. Robert Bellarmine, in this section of the De Controversiis, provides the reader with an unparalleled defense of the Catholic theology of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Many of the objections raised and refuted by St. Robert are still applicable today amidst the various theological speculations of our times. Steeped in the tradition of the Church, this text addresses many aspects of the theology of the Mass in a depth not seen in writings of modern authors. The timeliness of the book is evident in our current historical context as many priests and faithful are taking a fresh look at the ancient rite of Mass." -Fr. Chad Ripperger, SMD "For five years in Chablais, I preached with no books other than the Bible, and the Great Bellarmine."-St. Francis de Sales

Book The Resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth

Download or read book The Resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth written by Willi Marxen and published by SCM Press. This book was released on 2013-11-08 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these lectures, delivered before an audience drawn from all faculties of the University of Munster, Professor Marxsen explores the meaning of the resurrection of Jesus. He discusses the relevant texts - the Apostles' Creed, the Gospels, Paul, and compares the different traditions. He looks carefully at what we can really know about the 'Easter events', at what the ancient texts set out to say and the ideas of which they made use. He then goes on to show in some detail how the traditions were developed in subsequent history and what it might mean today for a Christian to say 'Jesus is Risen'. The book ends with a chapter on the Christian's future hope. Professor Marxsen deliberately talks about the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. In so doing he means to stress that the Risen Christ is identical with the earthly Jesus. Those who lay stress on the resurrection must also remember the faith to which Jesus of Nazareth summoned men.

Download or read book To be a Citizen written by James R. Lehning and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: France's Third Republic confronts historians and political scientists with what seems a paradox: it is at once France's most long-lived experiment with republicanism and a regime remembered primarily for chronic instability and spectacular scandal. From its founding in the wake of France's humiliation at the hands of Prussia to its collapse in the face of the Nazi Blitzkrieg, the Third Republic struggled to consolidate the often contradictory impulses of the French revolutionary tradition into a set of stable democratic institutions. To Be a Citizen is not an institutional history of the regime, but an exploration of the political culture gradually formed by the moderate republicans who steered it. In James R. Lehning's view, that culture was forced to reconcile conflicting views of the degree of citizen participation a republican form of government should embrace. The moderate republicans called upon the entire nation to act as citizens of the Republic even as they limited the ability of many, including women, Catholics, and immigrants, to assume this identity and to participate in political life. This participation, based on universal male suffrage alone, was at odds with the notion of universal citizenship--the tradition of direct democracy as expressed in 1789, 1793, 1830, and 1848. Lehning examines a series of events and issues that reveal both the tensions within the republican tradition and the regime's success. It forged a political culture that supported the moderate republican synthesis and blunted the ideal of direct democracy. To Be a Citizen not only does much to illuminate an important chapter in the history of modern France, but also helps the reader understand the dilemmas that arise as political elites attempt to accommodate a range of citizens within ostensibly democratic systems.

Book The End of Kings

Download or read book The End of Kings written by William R. Everdell and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2000-04-15 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in clear, lively prose, The End of Kings traces the history of republican governments and the key figures that are united by the simple republican maxim: No man shall rule alone. Breathtaking in its scope, Everdell's book moves from the Hebrew Bible, Solon's Athens and Brutus's Rome to the impeachment trial of Andrew Johnson and the Watergate proceedings during which Nixon resigned. Along the way, he carefully builds a definition of "republic" which distinguishes democratic republics from aristocratic ones for both history and political science. In a new foreword, Everdell addresses the impeachment trial of President Clinton and argues that impeachment was never meant to punish private crimes. Ultimately, Everdell's brilliant analysis helps us understand how examining the past can shed light on the present. "[An] energetic, aphoristic, wide-ranging book."—Marcus Cunliffe, Washington Post Book World "Ambitious in conception and presented in a clear and sprightly prose. . . . [This] excellent study . . . is the best statement of the republican faith since Alphonse Aulard's essays almost a century ago." —Choice "A book which ought to be in the hand of every American who agrees with Benjamin Franklin that the Founding Fathers gave us a Republic and hoped that we would be able to keep it."-Sam J. Ervin, Jr.

Book Intellectual Founders of the Republic

Download or read book Intellectual Founders of the Republic written by Sudhir Hazareesingh and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 2005 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This innovative study of French political culture re-examines the origins of modern republicanism through the lives and political thought of five nineteenth-century intellectuals: Jules Barni, Charles Dupont-White, Emile Littre, Eugene Pelletan, and Etienne Vacherot. By their writings and their political practices at the local, national, international levels these thinkers made major contributions to the founding of the new republican order in France. Drawing on a range of archival and published sources, the book sheds new light on classical republican thinking on such key issues as the interpretation of the 1789 Revolution, the definition of citizenship, the meaning of patriotism, the relationship between central government and local democracy, the value of individual liberty, and the place of education and religion in public and private life. These five studies also break new ground in the conceptualization of nineteenth-century French intellectual history.

Book European Universities from the Enlightenment to 1914

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European Universities from the Enlightenment to 1914 is an authoritative and unique work. Though patronized by a social elite, universities before 1914 were not ivory towers, but reflected the political and social conflicts of their day. Anderson combines chapters on national university systems (including Britain) with a searching and far-ranging discussion of more general themes. The book is an essential contribution both to modern European history, and to understanding the background of contemporary university problems.
