Book Early Letters of Thomas Carlyle

Download or read book Early Letters of Thomas Carlyle written by Charles Eliot Norton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Letters of Thomas Carlyle Mr. Carlyle was for many years, especially during his early manhood, an industrious letter-writer. A great many of his letters have been preserved and are in the possession of his niece, Mrs. Alexander Carlyle. It is at her desire that I have undertaken to edit a selection of them. "Express biography of me I had really rather that there should be none," said Carlyle in his Will, and a biography of him, correct at least if meagre, might perhaps have been gathered from his letters, his Reminiscences, and the Memorials of Jane Welsh Carlyle. Mr. Froude, however, thought otherwise, and has given to the public an "express biography" of him. The view of Mr. Carlyle's character presented in this biography has not approved itself to many of those who knew Carlyle best It may be a striking picture, but it is not a good portrait For the present, at least, it appears impracticable to prepare another formal biography. The peculiar style of Mr. Froude's performance, already in possession of the field, might perhaps put a portrait of Carlyle drawn by a hand more faithful to nature, and less skilled in fine artifices than his own, at a temporary disadvantage with the bulk of readers. Volume 30 illuminates Jane's inner life with the help of two previously unpublished documents: her complete journals from the years 1845-1852 and 1855-1856 and an interview conducted by her friend Ellen Twiselton that chronicles a painful period in the Carlyle marriage. Also included here is Jane's story, "The Simple Story of My Own First Love," and discussions of her complicated relations with feminists, whom she admired yet distrusted. Meanwhile, Thomas is mired in his remarkable study of Frederick the Great, a figure he reveres as an exemplar of "veracity" in a shallow age--an image of Carlyle himself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Letters of Thomas Carlyle, Vol. 2 Dear FitzGerald. - Here is another small job for you. It seems a possibility at present that I may put in somewhere, by way of Appendix, these Anecdotes of Mrs. Bendysh, which are in Noble (ii.329). Now will you read those pages of Noble, once more, carefully over, with an eye that way. You will find one does not learn where Mrs. Bendysh lived( near Yarmouth somewhere), what her or her husband's business was, or anything about their economic peculiarities and earthly localities; so that the whole matter looks there very much like a thing in Drury Lane. Now I want you to ask the Essex Archdeacon, or whoever he or she is that descends from Mrs. Bendysh, whether there is not ill the Family any certain knowledge as to all these points, any clear Tradition even, - any light to be had that would complete what you see to be wanting in the business. You Leave a Nohle have you not? or can get one about Bedford? I could cut you out these leaves and send them by post. Perhaps that will be best? You will then at once see what is wanting in general there. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book New Letters of Thomas Carlyle Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book New Letters of Thomas Carlyle Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Thomas Carlyle and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Letters of Thomas Carlyle, Vol. 1 This Selection from Carlyle's Correspondence is a sequel to the "Letters of Thomas Carlyle," published some years ago under the editorship of Professor Charles Eliot Norton, and brings to a completion the "Epistolary autobiography" begun by the publication of the "Early Letters." The New Letters have been chosen from an immense number now in my possession, or placed at my disposal by the kindness of the owners; and the two principal objects aimed at in making the Selection, have been, first, to present only the best and most characteristic examples of Carlyle's Letters; and, secondly, to arrange these, with occasional extracts from other Letters which are not of sufficient importance for publication in full, so that when read in connection with his "Reminiscences" and his Notes and Introductions to the "Letters and Memorials of Jane Welsh Carlyle," the whole might serve as an autobiography or picture of his life, self-drawn and therefore indisputably true and faithful in outline, and complete enough in detail for all legitimate purposes. As no Life of Carlyle, satisfactory to those who knew him intimately, has yet appeared, the autobiography which he has thus unconsciously traced in his Letters and Annotations is of more than usual value and importance in elucidating his character and conduct and in explaining the conditions and circumstances under which he lived and worked.
