If William had but waited a few days, it would have been no anticipation when he said to you the songs of spring were in the grove, ' for all this week the birds have chanted from morn till evening, - larks, black birds, thrushes, and far more than I can name and the busy rooks have joined their happy voices. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorials of Coleorton, Vol. 1: Being Letters From Coleridge, Wordsworth and His Sister, Southey, and Sir Walter Scott to Sir George and Lady Beaumont of Coleorton, Leicestershire, 1803 to 1834 A short Preface will suffice as an introduction to these volumes. While collecting materials for the Life of Wordsworth I had to pay occasional visits to Coleorton, in Leicestershire; and the late Sir George Beaumont, his son the present Baronet, and Lady Beaumont, kindly allowed me to examine (and to copy) all the letters they possessed, written by Wordsworth and his sister to their predecessors, - the Sir George and Lady Beaumont who lived at the beginning of this century. At the same time I found that there were letters from many other distinguished men in the library at the Hall; and, amongst them, some from Coleridge, from Southey, and from Sir Walter Scott. Download or read book The Collected Letters of Sir George and Lady Beaumont to the Wordsworth Family 1803 1829 written by Jessica Fay and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir George Beaumont is a key figure in the history of British art. As well as being a respected amateur landscape painter, he was a prominent patron, a collector, and co-founder of the National Gallery. William Wordsworth described Beaumont's friendship as one of the chief blessings of his life, and this edition reveals that the two men became collaborators as well as companions. In addition to documenting unique perspectives on social, political, and cultural events of the early nineteenth century (providing new contexts for reading Wordsworth's mature poetry), the letters collected here chart the progress of an increasingly intimate inter-familial relationship.

Those of 1809 happen to exceed those of the preceding year considerably in bulk, because the events are far more numerous. Nevertheless the public, who were well pleased with the length of the first volume, complain grievously because the second is longer, and the booksellers represent this to me as a serious evil. It is needless to say that, should the work continue, these representations will have no effect whatever upon me. In a history of this kind it is the business of the annalist not so much to regard the amusement of his own age as the information of those who are to come after him. I am advancing with a poem in blank verse, which I wish were finished, because its whole spirit is applicable to the present state of Spain, and it might have some effect in making others feel as I do upon that subject. Mrs. Southey and her sisters join with me in respects to Lady Beaumont.--Believe me, my dear sir, truly and respectfully yours, Robert Southey. Wordsworth to Sir George Beaumont. 1811.1 My dear Sir George, --Had there been room at the end of the small avenue of lime-trees for planting a spacious circle of the same trees, the urn might have been placed in the centre, with the inscription thus altered: Ye lime-trees, ranged around this hallowed urn, Shoot forth with lively power at Spring's return 1 Here may some painter sit in future days, Some future poet meditate his lays I Not mindless of that distant age, renowned, When inspiration hovered o'er this ground, The haunt of him who sang, how spear and shield In civil conflict met on Bosworth field, And of that famous youth (full soon removed From earth ) by mighty Shakespear"s self approved, Fletcher's associate, ...

This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir George Beaumont is a key figure in the history of British art. As well as being a respected amateur landscape painter, he was a prominent patron, a collector, and co-founder of the National Gallery. William Wordsworth described Beaumont’s friendship as one of the chief blessings of his life, and this edition reveals that the two men became collaborators as well as companions. In addition to documenting unique perspectives on social, political, and cultural events of the early nineteenth century (providing new contexts for reading Wordsworth’s mature poetry), the letters collected here chart the progress of an increasingly intimate inter-familial relationship. The picture that emerges is of a coterie that – in influence, creativity, and affection – rivals Wordsworth’s more famous exchange with Coleridge at Nether Stowey in the 1790s. The edition includes an extended study of how Wordsworth and Beaumont helped shape one another’s work, tracing processes of mutual artistic development that involved not only a meeting of aristocratic refinement and rural simplicity, of a socialite and a lover of retirement, of a painter and a poet, but also an aesthetic rapprochement between neoclassical and romantic values, between the impulse to idealize and the desire to particularize.
