Sinclair, Broadus's second wife] would exert yourselves to much. Tell Annie [daughter Annie Harrison] I had a new cake, on her birth day, we eat [sic] it, and said it was her birth cake ... I have heard that they have called William Thomas at last for the pastor of the church. They have not received an answer." Abram Burwell Brown succeeded Broadus as pastor of the Charlottesville Baptist Church when he resigned to become a professor in the newly formed Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Wrote "I know Charlottesville is a very delightful and a very important place, perhaps none more so, in some respects. Your present post is in my judgment exceedingly important. Still, you have a rising family which must be provided for if you can, or you deny the faith and every laborer is worthy of his hire." Broadus was chaplain of the University of Virginia in 1856. In 1859, he became professor of homiletics and interpretation of the New Testament at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

"To see you so obstinately (may I say) persist in being poor when you could so easily have an ample living, to see you thus persist in refusing to be placed above the pains of poverty, makes it necessary for me to look at the conscience of the case with purer eyes than most men have." Ends with: "I must not forget to relate that last week some day, I saw your acquaintance and friend Mr. Theo's Scott of Orange, and learned of him that instead of one little Maria Louisa, you have two little girls--twins." John A. Broadus was offered the chair of Greek at the University of Virginia. He refused, but accepted the chaplaincy of the University, serving 1855-1858.
