Book Letters to Madame Viardot

Download or read book Letters to Madame Viardot written by Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The letters of the great Russian writer Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev to M me Pauline Viardot; the famous singer; have their story. Lost or stolen; when the war of 1870 forced the Viardot family to leave Baden for London; these letters were found more than a quarter of a century later. Naturally; Ms. Viardot wished to take possession of documents which she had never voluntarily divested; and to which she had all the moral and legal rights. On the other hand; the motives advanced by the present possessor to keep the letters were not without value either. He had found the precious package-among some unimportant papers-in a box he had bought from a Berlin bookstaller; he; in his turn; had acquired it from the widow of a French doctor; it seems; here; stop my investigation on the origin of the box. Be that as it may; the last purchaser; a devoted admirer of Tourgueneff; made it his duty to preserve as a sacred deposit the correspondence which chance placed in his hands until the day when he could make it public; and he thought that this day could come only after the death of the recipient of the letters. Since; in the end; the owner of the letters was less preoccupied with a pecuniary question than with the desire to surround this publication with better possible literary conditions; I end up persuading him of the real advantages that would be gained by living it. under the auspices of the famous artist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Fans of Alexander Chee's best-selling novel, The Queen of the Night and opera fans everywhere. Set against the backdrop of the tumultuous events of 19th century Europe, An Unofficial Marriage dramatizes the equally tumultuous real-life love affair of two great artists—the famous Russian author, Ivan Turgenev, and the celebrated French opera singer, Pauline Viardot. From the moment he encounters her on the St. Petersburg stage, Ivan falls completely for Pauline. Though Pauline returns his feelings, she is bound by her singular passion for her art and her devotion to her gentle, older husband, Louis. Nevertheless, Ivan pursues Pauline across countries and continents—from Russia to France to Germany to Prussia—and in the decades that follow their fateful meeting, the lives of Pauline, Ivan, and Louis remain permanently intertwined as the lovers face jealousy, separation, the French Revolution of 1848, the cholera epidemic of 1849, the Franco-Prussian War, Turgenev’s arrest in Russia, Louis’s heartbreak and resignation, and the highs and lows of their artistic careers. “You know those unofficial marriages,” Turgenev would write almost thirty years after meeting Pauline, “They sometimes turn out more poisonous than the accepted form.” With beautiful and compelling prose and employing multiple perspectives, Joie Davidow (who herself has a background in opera) illuminates not only the interior lives of these two intensely passionate artists, but also the grand historic moments that Pauline and Ivan experienced and the celebrated figures who moved in their circles—including George Sand, Leo Tolstoy, Frédéric Chopin, Franz Liszt, and Ary Scheffer—providing insight into the dynamic worlds of 19th century opera, literature, art, and politics. Epic in the tradition of the Russian writers whom we encounter, and as romantic and tragic as the operas that Pauline Viardot performs in, An Unofficial Marriage brings to life with great scope and great humanity this captivating story from the past and explores timeless questions about the relationship between art and passion and the complex workings of the human heart.

Book excerpt: Pauline Garcia Viardot, the daughter of the famous singer and composer Manuel Garcia and younger sister of the celebrated Malibran, was a singer of genius and a woman of outstanding intellect. The first biography of Viardot not only recreates the drama of the prima donna's own life, but perfectly captures the scintillating brilliance of nineteenth-century artistic life: the colourful and diverse personalities of the Musset brothers, Chopin, George Sand, Meyerbeer, Berlioz, Gounod and Saint-Saens move in and out of Viardot's life. In 1843 Madame Viardot met the young Ivan Turgenev. From their first meeting until his death in 1883, he remained passionately devoted to her, following her around Europe and spending long periods of time as a member of her household. This authoritative study, which makes use of much hitherto unknown source material, has the fascination of a great Russian novel.

Book Dickens Journalism Music

Download or read book Dickens Journalism Music written by Robert Terrell Bledsoe and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02-23 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dickens, Journalism, Music presents the first full analysis of the articles on music published in the two journals conducted by Charles Dickens, Household Words and its successor, All the Year Round. Robert Bledsoe examines the editorial influence of Dickens on articles written by a range of writers and what it reveals about his own developing attitude to music and its social role in parks, community singing groups, music halls and on the streets. The book also looks at the difference between the two journals and how the greater coverage of classical music and opera in All the Year Round reflects the increasing importance of music to Dickens in his later life.
