Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A Trivial Comedy for Serious People': its subtitle is the best summary of a play that is the theatrical equivalent of a butterfly. The verbal brilliance of its highly self-conscious characters hides deep anxieties about social and personal identity: Jack Worthing, found as a baby in a handbag at Victoria Station and named after a railway ticket, is prepared to be re-christened to obtain the Christian name - Earnest - his beloved Gwendolen requires in a husband; he then has to confront the stigma of being the illegitimate child of a servant, before fortune, and a benevolent dramatist, reveal his true and entirely respectable identity. This is the only one-volume edition of the play to include an appendix with earlier versions and additional scenes that allow an appreciation of Wilde's creative process.

Book Publisher to the Decadents

Download or read book Publisher to the Decadents written by James G. Nelson and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Publisher to the Decadents chronicles the experiences of Leonard Smithers (1861-1907), a key figure in the literary culture of late Victorian England. In his day he was known primarily for publishing books of upscale pornography. He became the publisher of choice for the Decadents, including most notably Oscar Wilde and Audrey Beardsley. While a young solicitor in his native Sheffield, Smithers established a correspondence with the famed explorer and translator of exotic texts, Captain Sir Richard Burton. Burton translated The Thousand Nights and a Night (popularly known as The Arabian Nights), which was published by Smithers in 1885. Smithers collaborated with Burton in the publication of two Latin texts, the Priapeia and the Carmina of Catullus, both of erotic cast. After the death of Burton in 1890, Smithers continued a significant involvement with his work, serving as an adviser to Lady Isabel Burton. During this time Smithers formed a partnership with Harry Sidney Nichols, and together they produced a series of pornographic books under the imprint of the Erotika Biblion Society. The years between 1895 and 1900 were Smithers's glory years when he managed to publish a number of books illustrated by Beardsley, a magazine known as the Savoy, and books of verse by Ernest Dowson and Arthur Symons that have proved to be the finest expression of the Decadent Movement. Throughout his career Smithers sought to produce attractive, well-made books that were tastefully designed and printed. This book provides expansive insight into the prizes and pitfalls of an early English publisher of the decadent Nineties.

Book Oscar Wilde the Great Drama of His Life

Download or read book Oscar Wilde the Great Drama of His Life written by Ashley H. Robins and published by Apollo Books. This book was released on 2012-07-23 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1890s, Oscar Wilde enjoyed one of the most high-profile reputations in Britain. Yet, virtually overnight, he was plunged into disgrace and ruin. What were the reasons for this extraordinary reversal of fortune? This book - now available in paperback - explores Wilde's motivation in prosecuting the Marquess of Queensberry, and it elaborates on the precarious legal situation that effectively quashed any prospect of a withdrawal from the lawsuit without dire consequences. The book examines the medical and psychiatric aspects of Wilde's two-year imprisonment and reveals the machinations among prison officials and doctors to cover up Wilde's state of health, based on the original Home Office records. Wilde's medical history is presented with an expert evaluation of his terminal illness, including a resolution of the syphilis controversy. The book also details Wilde's tangled matrimonial affairs during his imprisonment and goes on to disclose the maneuvers adopted by friends to secure his early release, citing hitherto unpublished letters to show that bribery of prison personnel was seriously contemplated. The issue of homosexuality is discussed not only in relation to Oscar Wilde, but from the broader historical, legal, and biological perspective. Wilde's character and behavior is portrayed through the images he projected onto society, by the strong but mixed public reaction to him, and by the quality of his interpersonal relationships with his wife, family, and close friends. Finally, Wilde's personality is assessed using internationally accepted diagnostic criteria. In an unusual and innovative experiment, a group of Wildean scholars completed a psychological questionnaire as if they were doing so for Oscar Wilde himself. Drawing on these findings and on his own extensive psychiatric experience, author Ashley Robins concludes that Wilde had a personality disorder that culminated in the final and tragic phase of his life.
