Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters to a Friend: On the Evidences, Doctrines, and Duties of the Christian Religion The history of the work now presented to the public may be given in very few words. It originated in a series of conversations which I had about five years ago with a friend much younger than myself, who had a considerable acquaintance with almost all except religious subjects. He expressed much surprise that a person of my habits and pursuits in other respects should adopt the religious notions I had long entertained, or indeed be solicitous about any religious opinions whatever; and I endeavoured to assign the reasons which led me to embrace them, and to consider such topics as of the first importance. After a short time we were so far separated as to have much fewer opportunities of personal intercourse: and I in consequence became induced to carry on the momentous inquiry we had previously commenced, by letter. Pursuant to this intention, all the letters in the first volume were actually written: they were read in manuscript by my friend; and, as I have reason to believe, were not unproductive of benefit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters to a Friend, Vol. 1: On the Evidences, Doctrines, and Duties, of the Christian Religion I am willing to hope, indeed, that this spirit is gaining ground among us; and that many men are beginning to act upon the persuasion that every controversy agitated in the Christian Church upon points of inferior moment, causes a deduction, and in numerous instances a very serious one, from the regard paid to the really import-ant objects of faith. This book was released on 2017-03-03 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters to a Friend, on the Evidences, Doctrines, and Duties, of the Christian Religion, Vol. 2 Christianity, it is true, is distinguishable from all other systems by the purity, excellency, and extent of the morality it enforces; yet this is not, I conceive, its most prominent characteristic. It no where pre sents us with a connected scheme of ethics, but it does far better in advancing the most simple precepts rela tive to every part of moral duty, and accompanying them with the most powerful incentives to upright and holy conduct. Its grand peculiarity consists in as suming the fact that man is in a fallen state, that he has lost the image of God, that he is of himself inca puble of regaining the favour of his Creator, and in providing a remedy by which man may be cured of his moral disorder; this remedy being no less than the gift of the Son of God who, in relation to mankind, is not so frequently called their pattern, as the Physician of Souls, the great Deliverer, the Saviour of the world. Book Letters to a Diminished Church

Download or read book Letters to a Diminished Church written by Dorothy Sayers and published by HarperChristian + ORM. This book was released on 2004-09-06 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What must a person believe to be a Christian? In this collection of 16 essays, famed author Dorothy L. Sayers discusses why the church desperately needs to refocus on doctrine, as doctrine impacts all of life. In her dynamic and sharp writings, Dorothy L. Sayers turned the popular perception of Christianity on its head. She argues that the essence of Christianity is in the character of Christ—energetic, dramatic, and utterly alive. This collection of sixteen brilliant essays reveals Sayers, at her best—a powerful view of Christianity as startling and relevant as it was 50 years ago. An outspoken defender of Christian orthodoxy, Dorothy L. Sayers discusses Christian theology with brilliance and wit. A British scholar, author, and staunch Christian, Sayers brings theology vividly to life by showing how the Bible, history, literature, and modern science fit together to make religion not only possible but necessary in our time. Each essay is a concise, perceptive examination of the topic at hand. The book: Includes sixteen essays on a variety of topics addressing core beliefs, the image of God, the problem of sin and evil, and more Presents age-old doctrines without prettying them up or watering them down Provides insights into the social and spiritual forces that affect the modern-day cultural shift away from Christ Whether you are reading the great works of Western literature, thinking about your place in God's universe, or simply dealing with the thousand-and-one problems of daily living, this powerful book has words of both challenge and comfort for you. "The devil should stand alert, for Sayers is one of his foremost adversaries."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Letter to a Friend on the Evidences and Theory of Christianity The following letter is published at the request of the friend to whom it was ad dressed, and in the hope that its brevity may prove a recommendation to some who have neither time nor inclination for the study of works of greater length and higher pretensions. In admitting, how ever, this hope, the writer would earnestly refer to the Introduction to the Critical Study and Knowledge of the Holy Scrip tures, by the Rev. T. Hartwell Horne, as a library of information on all points connected with the evidences of the Chris tian religion, and the illustration of the Bible; and also to the works of the Rev.
