Beside the unfavourable influence, which it is fitted to exert upon her own feelings, it rarely fails to sink her in the estimation of the wise and discerning. In short there is hardly any thing, which I would not rather have you, than a fashionable belle; and I would greatly prefer that you should have one suitable and advantageous offer of marriage at a proper time, than that you should engross the undivided gallantry of all your acquaintance. That Providence may direct you with respect to every thing in which your happiness is involved, is the sincere and fervent prayer of Your devoted Father. LETTER XII. i INTERCOURSE WITH THE WORLB. My dear Child, Notwithstanding much of what might naturally fall under the subject of your inter course with the world, has been anticipated in several of the preceding letters, there are still some things connected with it, which I deem too important to be passed over in silence. A few hints on this subject, will, therefore, claim your attention in the present letter. With regard to the degree of intercourse, which you are to have with the world, you will need to guard against the two extremes;-- on the one hand, of neglecting your more retired and domestic duties, for the sake of mingling continually in society; and on the other, of imbibing the habit of a recluse, in order to shut yourself out from the din and business of the world. A character formed exclusively in either of these ways, will lack some qualities which are important in practical life; and it is only the proper combination of both, which will give to it a due proportion and consistency. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most practical and truly valuable treatises on the culture and discipline of the female mind. "A practical monitor, containing not merely lessons of wisdom for all classes, but rather the appropriate advice to guide the young and timid female adventurer into life, to furnish useful counsel on the most important topics as they occur, and to aid in the forming female character in its highest attainable excellence...lessons of conduct for the school - for friendship, books, manners, society, Christian character and conduct, settlement for life and preparation for death...we hardly know any work of moral precept, which without being trite, embraces more practical wisdom, nor any work of religious inculcation, in which religion is presented more attractively. We have been surprised at the zest and freshness which the writer has infused into his letters upon subjects. They will exemplify the deep feeling of evangelical piety which pervades the whole; and the reader will need no prompting to remark the sacred eloquence with which they are inspired." -The Quarterly Christian Spectator, Volume 3, 1831 CONTENTS Introduction Independence of Mind Forming the Manners Conversation Amusements Interaction with the World Practical Religion Self-Knowledge Self-Government Humility Improvement of Time Preparation for Death Early Friendships Marriage Forming Religious Sentiments Proper mode of treating Religious Error Education, general directions General Reading Education, various branches Education, domestic economy "I beg you to remember that what you are at the age of eighteen or twenty, you probably will be in every future period of life. In other words, your character will, by that time, in all probability, have acquired a fixed direction - a direction which will last through all the scenes of your prosperity and adversity to your dying hour. I appeal to the records of human experience, I appeal to the observation of any individual who has been accustomed carefully to notice facts on this subject, whether the general truth is not as above stated - that in the great majority of cases, the character of a young girl, at the close of her education, is formed for life - of course, formed for eternity!"
