Book Selected Letters of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley

Download or read book Selected Letters of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley written by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The letters of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley reveal a remarkable woman living in a remarkable age. They date from October 1814 - shortly after her elopement with Percy Bysshe Shelley - through September 1850, five months before her death. Her correspondents' names are familiar - Shelley himself, Byron, Bulwer-Lytton, Disraeli, General Lafayette, Sir Walter Scott - and the letters abound with anecdotes about such eminent figures as her parents (William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft), Keats, Washington Irving, and Charles and Mary Lamb. Publication of the widely acclaimed three-volume edition of Mary Shelley's letters was completed in 1988, containing all 1,276 of her known extant letters. Now Betty T. Bennett has selected 230 of those letters to give an overview of Mary Shelley's life as she was seeing it, living it, and recording it. Bennett also includes an introductory essay that sketches a portrait of Mary Shelley, her world, and her place in the history of literature and letters.

Download or read book Letters of Mary W Shelley written by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of Mary W. Shelley: Mostly Unpublished; With Introduction and Notes Mary Shelley first became widely known when as a girl of sixteen she ran away, in the early morning of July 28, 1814, with the now immortal poet, who was then un happily married to Harriet Westbrook;but at that time, aside from being the grandson of an English baronet, he had achieved comparatively little that gave promise of immortality. Four months earlier he had written to a\ friend, I have sunk into a premature old age of exhaustion which renders me dead to every thing but the unenviable capacity of in dulging the vanity of hope, and a terrible susceptibility to objects of disgust and hatred. I live here like the insect that sports in a transient sunbeam, which the next cloud shall obscure forever. That one hope proved to be Mary, who apparently revived his spirits, for in the inspiring companionship of this talented girl he produced most of the work by which he so greatly enriched the world's literature. Considering the fact that Mary had been obliged to live under the same roof with her father, the nagging, parasitical William Godwin, and a stepmother who was not famed for her tenderheartedness, it is not surprising that she should have run away with somebody, or anybody. Download or read book The Life and Letters of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley Volume II written by Mary Shelley and published by . This book was released on 2016-11-16 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second volume of Shelley's letters offer further insight into her life, talents and inspirations as she approached maturity as an artist and individual. It is through her voluminous letters and correspondences that we gain an intimate insight into Shelley's mental processes, opinions and outlook on life. Attempts were made by Shelley's son to censor and tone down her stark attitudes, so that she may be better accepted into the Victorian culture which fostered and grew her reputation. These letters are however produced without abridgment, allowing the reader a glimpse into the thoughts of one of the era's finest literary women. Revered as the author of the timeless horror novel Frankenstein, Mary Shelley would privately express frustrations at this single book eclipsing her other efforts in both fiction and non-fiction. She also possessed political views which she made pains to express via her written works, and was dismayed that most leading critics of the day either ignored or simply missed these references in her fiction. Although the odds were stacked against Mary Shelley from her earliest years simply because of her gender - a fact which she was all too aware - her letters demonstrate a determination and strength of spirit. Her correspondences with Percy in particular evidence a soul capable of passions great and bold, while several of her views on emancipation and individual liberty were startlingly ahead of their time. Biographical annotations by Florence Ashton Marshall are situated between many of the letters within this book. These explain what events transpired between the individual letters, letting the reader better follow what Shelley alludes and refers to. Thus, this collection of Shelley's letters is immensely readable, absorbing and insightful.

This book was released on 2016-09-05 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was an English novelist, short story writer, dramatist, essayist, biographer, and travel writer, best known for her Gothic novel Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus (1818). She also edited and promoted the works of her husband, the Romantic poet and philosopher Percy Bysshe Shelley. Her father was the political philosopher William Godwin, and her mother was the philosopher and feminist Mary Wollstonecraft. After Wollstonecraft's death less than a month after her daughter Mary was born, Mary was raised by Godwin, who was able to provide his daughter with a rich, if informal, education, encouraging her to adhere to his own liberal political theories. When Mary was four, her father married a neighbour, with whom, as her stepmother, Mary came to have a troubled relationship.
