Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lydia Huntley Sigourney Mrs. Sigourney was born in Norwich, Connecticut to Ezekiel Huntley and Zerviah Wentworth. Their only child, she was named after her father's first wife, Lydia Howard, who had died soon after marrying Ezekiel. In her autobiography Letters of Life Sigourney describes her relation to her parents, her decision to care for them, and her intent to avoid marriage because it would interfere with this relationship. I had . . . reason for avoiding serious advances. My mind was made up never to leave my parents. I felt that their absorbing love could never be repaid by the longest life-service, and that the responsibility of an only child, their sole prop and solace, would be strictly regarded by Him who readeth the heart. I had seen aged people surrounded by indifferent persons, who considered their care a burden, and could not endure the thought that my tender parents, who were without near relatives, should be thrown upon the fluctuating kindness of hirelings and strangers. To me, my father already seemed aged, though scarcely sixty; and I said, in my musing hours, Shall he, who never denied me aught, or spoke to me otherwise than in love-tones, stretch forth his hands in their weakness, "and find none to gird him(September 1, 1791 - June 10, 1865), née Lydia Howard Huntley, was a popular American poet during the early and mid 19th century. She was commonly known as the "Sweet Singer of Hartford". Most of her works were published with just her married name Mrs. Sigourney.

Not illustrated. 1866 edition. Excerpt: ... LETTER XIII. LITERATUBE. My literary course has been a happy one. It commenced in impulse, and was continued from habit. Two principles it has ever kept in view--not to interfere with the discharge of womanly duty, and to aim at being an instrument of good. My journals, which I have already mentioned were begun at an early age, were usually made the repositories of my poems, in the order in which they were composed. Those systematic records became a sort of necessity of my existence. They seemed an adjunct in religious progress, and to justify the adjuration with which one of them is consecrated: "Give me Thine aid calmly to look upon the changes that are appointed me, and to love the little streams fed hourly from the fountain of Divine Mercy; and to hope that, when I fade, as I soon shall, like the grass, I may be renewed in the image of a glorious immortality." After my establishment in a school at Hartford, through the influence of Daniel Wadsworth, Esq., he and his lady, my lovely friend, requested a sight of my journals, which had been usually kept in sequestration. He made selections from their contents which he persuaded me were adapted to the public eye; and I adventured, under his guardianship, on what was in those times, and in our part of the country, a novel enterprise for a female. 1815. 1. "Moral Pieces in Prose and Verse," was the modest title of my first volume, which comprised two hundred and sixty-seven pages. My kind patron, the first who ever gave encouragement to my literary tastes, and whose name I cannot utter without a thrill of gratitude, took upon himself the whole responsibility of contracting with publishers, gathering subscriptions, and even correcting the proof-sheets; and was delighted to present me, at...

Book A Faithful Heart

Download or read book A Faithful Heart written by Emmala Reed and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emmala Reed's journals from 1865 and 1866 present a detailed account of life in western South Carolina as war turned to reconstruction. Reed's postwar writings are particularly important given their rarity - many Civil War diarists stopped writing at war's end. Also unlike many diarists of the period, Reed lived in a small town rather than on a plantation or in an urban center.

Book Letters Written by Walt Whitman to his Mother 1866 1872

Download or read book Letters Written by Walt Whitman to his Mother 1866 1872 written by Walt Whitman and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-12 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sentimental value of these letters from Walt Whitman to his mother is increased by our knowledge of her influence upon the poet and his poetry. This influence, emotional and not intellectual, was one of the most important forces of his life. Born in 1793, Louisa Van Velsor, the daughter of a Long Island farmer and his Welsh wife, grew up, as Perry says, almost illiterate. In 1816, Louisa married Walter Whitman, an itinerant carpenter, and settled In West Hills for a while. The next twenty years, spent in various parts of Long Island, the Whitmans devoted to raising their nine children, the greater burden falling on the mother. After the death of her husband in 1853, Mrs. Whitman lived in Brooklyn and Camden for eighteen years, living to see the time when George was wounded in the Civil War, when Andrew died, when Hannah’s husband, Charles Heyde, attempted to ruin his wife’s family, when Jeff was in St. Louis, when Walt lived in Washington. These few facts of her life are without significance except that in their unity of purpose Whitman found some of the ideas for ‘Leaves of Grass’. For in his own home, he found the typical American family; in his own home he found the ‘perfect mother’. During the last years of her life Whitman desired nothing more than for them to live together. Their letters constantly discuss the plan, and only finances prevented its realization. How Walt must have admired the even temper, good sense, and cheerfulness which Bucke says Mrs. Whitman possessed! These are the same qualities which come out in her son’s letters. The occasional touches of humor (which many think cannot be found in Whitman), the bits of friendly gossip—’snack talk’ Walt calls it, all the homely business of Walt’s life. In the following pages, we have the privilege of seeing Whitman’s exquisite respect for his mother, his gentleness, his kindness, and his efforts to make her final years peaceful.—Rollo G. Silver

Book The Life Letters and Journals of Lord Byron 1866 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life Letters and Journals of Lord Byron 1866 Classic Reprint written by Thomas Moore and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 774 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life, Letters and Journals of Lord Byron, 1866 In presenting these Volumes to the public I should have felt, I own, considerable diffidence, from a sincere distrust in my own powers of doing justice to such a task, were I not well convinced that there is in the subject itself, and in the rich variety of materials here brought to illustrate it, a degree of attraction and interest which it would be difficult, even for hands the most unskillful, to extinguish. However lamentable were the circumstances under which Lord Byron became estranged from his country, to his long absence from England, during the most brilliant period of his powers, we are indebted for all those interesting Letters which compose the greater part of the Second Volume of this work, and which will be found equal, if not superior, in point of vigour, variety, and liveliness, to any that have yet adorned this branch of our literature. What has been said of Petrarch, that "his correspondence and verses together afford the progressive interest of a narrative in which the poet is always identified with the man," will be found applicable, in a far greater degree, to Lord Byron, in whom the literary and the personal character were so closely interwoven, that to have left his works without the instructive commentary which his Life and Correspondence afford, would have been equally an injustice both to himself and to the world.
