Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of Junius The fubmiflion of a free people to the executive authority of government is no more than a com pliance with laws, which they themfelves have enae'ted. While the national honour is firmly maintained abroad, and while jufiice is impar tially adminillered at home, the obedience of the fubjee't will be voluntary, chearful, and I might almoft fay unlimited. A generous nation is grate ful even ii): the prefervation of its rights, and wil lingly extends the refpeet due to the oflice of a good prince into an afi'eetion for his perfon. Loyalty, in the heart and underfianding of an Englilhman, is a national attachment to the guardian of the laws. Prejudices and paflion have fometimes carried it to a criminal length a and, whatever foreigners may imagine, we know that Englilhmen have erred as much in a millaken zeal for particular perfons and families, as they ever did in defence of what they thought moll: dear and interelling to themfelves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Letters of Junius, Vol. 1 Lowther, son-in-law of lord Bute, upon the plea that these lands, which formerly belonged to the crown, had not been duly specified in King William's grant of them to the Port land family; and that hence, although they had been in the Portland family for nearly seventy years, they of right he longed to the crown still. The letters signed Atticus and Brutus relate chie y to the growing disputes with the Ameri can colonies: and those subscribed Lucius exclusively to the outrageous dismission of Sir Jeffery Amherst from his post of governor of Virginia. The name of Mnemon was, perhaps, taken up at hazard. That of Atticus was unquestionably assumed from the author's own opinion of the purity of his style, an opinion in which the public universally concurred; and the three remaining signa tures of Lucius, J unius, and Brutus were obviously deduced from a veneration for the memory of the celebrated Roman patriot, who united these three names in his own. Download or read book Junius Finally Discovered Classic Reprint written by William H. Graves and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-25 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Junius Finally Discovered I hope that my readers will observe that almost every proposition laid down by me is sustained by facts, and by history, in which the books and pages are cited. That I rarely volunteer an Opinion of my own, unless it is amply supported by historical facts, or corroborated by well - known authors and able critics. If the reader will examine the books of Mr. Taylor and H. R. Francis, frequently referred to in this discussion, wherein they contend that Sir Philip Francis was the author of the Junius Letters, he will discover that almost every one of their propositions is founded upon their own opinions, surmises and conjectures, without any facts or history to sustain them; the reason why, is very evident: there were no facts or history in existence which tended to prove their contention. It is impossible to prove a fact which does not exist. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The daring spirit by which these letters are sup posed to be distinguished, seems to require that some thing serious should be said in their defence. I am no lawyer by profession, nor do I pretend to be more deeply read than every English gentleman should be, in the laws of his country. If, therefore, the principles I maintain are truly constitutional, I shall not think myself answered, though I should be convicted of a mistake in terms, or of misapplying the language of the law. I speak to the plain understanding of the people, and appeal to their honest, liberal construction of me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Junius Unmasked: Or Thomas Paine the Author of the Letters of Junius, and the Declaration of Independence These were the concluding words of his last Letter. So say I now, and I make them the preface to an argument which now sets the great apostle of liberty right before the world. They serve, like a literary hyphen, to connect the two ages - his own with this; and the two lives - the masked with the Open one; in both of which ages and lives he did good to mankind, and that mightily.
