Book excerpt: The correspondence of the Czech theologian John Hus shed light into the religious and political upheavals of his time, as Bohemian church reformers and traditionalists vied for influence. Hus sought to change the church's principles, opposing a number of Catholic opinions on topics such as the Eucharist and ecclesiology. A gifted and eloquent philosopher, his explanations roused the spirits of both nobles and the larger population alike. Those in favor of Hus's ideas were termed Hussites; this group believed in their reforms, which they considered to better reflect Christian values for the Bohemians. Yet the Catholic Church rejected the ideas, setting the stage for lengthy, protracted and violent conflict between Rome and the Bohemian authorities. The letters herein reveal Hus's thinking in detail. We learn how he arrived at his conclusions for theology, through his explanatory writing to church officials both locally in Bohemia and abroad. Hus encouraged his followers, asking them to preach under the influence of God's divine will, rather than that of the existing church hierarchy. Some letters address villages or towns who were either curious toward, supportive or opposed to the reforms Hus espoused. Notes appended to each letter clarify references, that the history and complexities of the time be understood.

Book excerpt: John Huss came from the ancient Kingdom of Bohemia, but his voice belongs to our collective religious heritage. He carved a place for himself in the history of revolutionary theology by taking a position that was dangerously contrary to the orthodoxy of his time and his church. Whether Roman Catholic, protestant or of an orthodox denomination this work has far reaching implications for all Christians and scholars. Orthodox denominations find in his style of preaching a resonance with the roots of their church and an older style of religious leadership. Huss can rightly be said to have rocked the Roman Catholic Church to its very foundations, threatening to rip Bohemia permanently from the bosom of mother Church. His subsequent death sentence was utterly unsuccessful in attempting to consign his views to the inferno. To Protestants, particularly those who know the roots of rebellion run deeper and further than Martin Luther ever dreamed, Huss is a hero and a martyr for the cause of religious reformation. He redefined church, fellowship within Christianity and the nature of religious orthodoxy was changed forever by his radical message. To those who do not believe he represents the powerful figure of a man of conscience, determined to get his message to the masses, no matter what it cost him personally. To some John Huss remains unabsolved, unforgiven, but his resolute conviction, right to the very end ensures that as readers we realise he also remains unapologetic. A tragic, racing read by David Schaff that ensures that we know the value of standing up for those beliefs we hold dear as well as the terrible cost. LETTERS WRITTEN AT THE PERIOD OF THE INTERDICTION OF JOHN HUSS, AND OF HIS EXILE FROM PRAGUE IN 1411; SOME OF THEM MAY HAVE BEEN WRITTEN IN 1410. The letters of this series contain the greater part of the admirable exhortations addressed by John Huss to the believers of his church. They are not distinguished either for the great diversity of incidents, or the dramatic interest of those in the second series, but they clearly evidence the great intrepidity, Christian piety, love for his brethren, and true greatness, that pervaded the mind of Huss. The writer already felt a presentiment of his martyrdom; and it is easy to perceive in reading them, that he would not give way when his time * This attestation of the faithful Maldoniewitz is found after John Huss's letters, in the old collection of his works.--Johann. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Letters of John Hus: With Introductions and Explanatory Notes The constant quotations in the letters from the Fathers, the Vulgate, and other sources have given us no small difficulty. As regards the Vulgate, Hus differs very widely from the present Clementine Sextine text. In the lack of data it has been impossible to decide to what extent the difference is due to a faulty memory, or to the use by Hus of manuscripts somewhat differing from the Paris recension that was the standard of his time. As a matter of fact, the quotations of Hus from the Scriptures are generally only verbally accurate in the few letters for which we must depend alone on the doctored text of the Monumenta or Epistolw Ptisstmoe. In turning the Vulgate into English we have generally quoted the douai-rheims version. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
